Imaging quantum melting in a disordered 2D Wigner solid

Two-dimensional strongly interacting electrons crystalize into a solid phase known as the Wigner crystal at low densities and form a Fermi liquid at high densities. At intermediate densities, the two-dimensional solid evolves into a strongly correlated liquid phase around a critical density. We observed this quantum melting of a disordered Wigner solid in bilayer molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2) using a noninvasive scanning tunneling microscopy imaging technique. At low densities, the Wigner solid forms nanocrystalline domains pinned by local disorder. It exhibits a quantum densification behavior with increased densities in the solid phase. Above a threshold density, the Wigner solid melts locally and enters a mixed phase in which solid and liquid regions coexist. The liquid regions expand and form a percolation network at even higher densities.

Structural and mechanical properties of monolayer amorphous carbon and boron nitride

Amorphous materials exhibit various characteristics that are not featured by crystals and can sometimes be tuned by their degree of disorder (DOD). Here, we report results on the mechanical properties of monolayer amorphous carbon (MAC) and monolayer amorphous boron nitride (maBN) with different DOD. The pertinent structures are obtained by kinetic-Monte-Carlo (kMC) simulations using machine-learning potentials (MLP) with density-functional-theory (DFT)-level accuracy. An intuitive order parameter, namely the areal fraction F x occupied by crystallites within the continuous random network, is proposed to describe the DOD. We find that F x captures the essence of the DOD: Samples with the same F x but different sizes and arrangements of crystallites, obtained using two distinct kMC procedures, have virtually identical radial distributions functions as well as bond-length and bond-angle distributions. Furthermore, by simulating the fracture process with molecular dynamics, we found that the mechanical responses of MAC and maBN before fracture are mainly determined by F x and are insensitive to the sizes and specific arrangements and to some extent the numbers and area distributions of the crystallites. The behavior of cracks in the two materials is analyzed and found to mainly propagate in meandering paths in the CRN region and to be influenced by crystallites in distinct ways that toughen the material. Furthermore, the present results reveal the relation between structure and mechanical properties in amorphous monolayers and may provide a universal toughening strategy for 2D materials.

Global assessment of the carbon–water tradeoff of dry cooling for thermal power generation

Water scarcity and climate change are dual challenges that could potentially threaten energy security. Yet, integrated water–carbon management frameworks coupling diverse water- and carbon-mitigation technologies at high spatial heterogeneity are largely underdeveloped. Here we build a global unit-level framework to investigate the CO 2 emission and energy penalty due to the deployment of dry cooling—a critical water mitigation strategy—together with alternative water sourcing and carbon capture and storage under climate scenarios. We find that CO 2 emission and energy penalty for dry cooling units are location and climate specific (for example, 1–15% of power output), often demonstrating notably faster efficiency losses than rising temperature, especially under the high climate change scenario. Despite energy and CO 2 penalties associated with alternative water treatment and carbon capture and storage utilization, increasing wastewater and brine water accessibility provide potential alternatives to dry cooling for water scarcity alleviation, whereas CO 2 storage can help to mitigate dry cooling-associated CO 2 emission tradeoffs when alternative water supply is insufficient. By demonstrating an integrative planning framework, our study highlights the importance of integrated power sector planning under interconnected dual water–carbon challenges.
