First-Principles Modeling of the Repassivation of Corrosion Resistant Alloys: Part II. Surface Adsorption Isotherms for Alloys and the Chloride Susceptibility Index

Quantitatively predicting the corrosion resistance of alloys is vital to the design and application of the next generation of superior corrosion resistant alloys (CRAs). Here, the Chloride Susceptibility Index (CSI), a scientifically based quantitative descriptor for repassivation tendency of CRAs, is proposed as a metric constructed through combining atomistically resolved information regarding adsorption and alloy surface composition with environmental conditions such as applied potential, temperature, pH, and Cl – concentration. Using this method, the response of CRAs to relevant environments can be predicted. CSI is determined by: (1) estimation of thermoequilibrium surface coverages of O and Cl by a Langmuir isotherm model using adsorption energies of different species (O, Cl, OH, H 2 O) obtained from DFT. (2) determination of CSI by integrating Cl surface coverage over a realistic window of applied potentials, thereby incorporating the effect of Cl surface coverage and electrochemical environment simultaneously. A series of Ni-Cr-X alloys was used as an example to develop and validate the method through studying the effect of different alloy solutes X on chloride resistance. Here, the trends and relations predicted by CSI are in qualitative agreements with experimental observations. Moreover, a quantitative correlation is found between CSI and the repassivation potential.

Localized Corrosion Behavior of Non-Equiatomic NiFeCrMnCo Multi-Principal Element Alloys

A series of single phase Ni 38 Fe 20 Cr x Mn 21–0.5x Co 21–0.5x multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) were fabricated and their localized corrosion behavior was tested in 0.6 M NaCl solution. These MPEAs were found to be susceptible to localized corrosion, exhibiting pitting at room temperature, as indicated by positive hysteresis loops and low repassivation potentials observed in cyclic potentiodynamic polarization experiments. The pitting resistance increased with increasing Cr content. Interestingly, even the MPEAs with low chromium content, Ni 38 Fe 20 Cr 6 Mn 18 Co 18 and Ni 38 Fe 20 Cr 10 Mn 16 Co 16 , exhibited passivity and localized corrosion. Here, the passivity observed in these low chromium MPEAs is likely derived from their relatively high nickel content. Crystallographic pit morphology was observed in most of these MPEAs, suggesting the absence of a salt film on the dissolving pit surface. Such crystallographic pit morphology indicates that the pit growth in most of these MPEAs was under charge-transfer/ohmic control.

Anisotropic Phonon Response of Few-Layer PdSe 2 under Uniaxial Strain

PdSe 2 , an emerging 2D material with a novel anisotropic puckered pentagonal structure, has attracted growing interest due to its layer-dependent electronic bandgap, high carrier mobility, and good air stability. In this work, a detailed Raman spectroscopic study of few-layer PdSe 2 (two to five layers) under the in-plane uniaxial tensile strain up to 3.33% is performed. Two of the prominent PdSe 2 Raman peaks are influenced differently depending on the direction of strain application. Additionally, the A g 1 mode redshifts more than the A g 3 mode when the strain is applied along the a -axis of the crystal, while the A g 3 mode redshifts more than the A g 1 mode when the strain is applied along the b -axis. Such an anisotropic phonon response to strain indicates directionally dependent mechanical and thermal properties of PdSe 2 and also allows the identification of the crystal axes. The results are further supported using first-principles density-functional theory. Interestingly, the near-zero Poisson’s ratios for few-layer PdSe 2 are found, suggesting that the uniaxial tensile strain can easily be applied to few-layer PdSe 2 without significantly altering their dimensions at the perpendicular directions, which is a major contributing factor to the observed distinct phonon behavior. The findings pave the way for further development of 2D PdSe 2 -based flexible electronics.

Corrosion and repassivation of Super 13Cr stainless steel in artificial 1D pit electrodes at elevated temperature

Repassivation behavior of Super 13Cr martensitic stainless steel was investigated using a one-dimensional artificial pit electrode in deaerated NaCl solutions at 85 °C. Critical potentials for pit repassivation (E crit ) were measured by downward potential scans. E crit and the final current density (i f ) at the end of the scan can be correlated to the pit repassivation, showing that repassivation is more probable with smaller i f and higher E crit . Pit repassivation at a constant potential was correlated with if and average current density (i avg ). A combination of lower i f and i avg suggests a higher probability for pit repassivation.

Self-accelerated corrosion of nuclear waste forms at material interfaces

The US plan for high-level nuclear waste includes the immobilization of long-lived radionuclides in glass or ceramic waste forms in stainless-steel canisters for disposal in deep geological repositories. Here we report that, under simulated repository conditions, corrosion could be significantly accelerated at the interfaces of different barrier materials, which has not been considered in the current safety and performance assessment models. Severe localized corrosion was found at the interfaces between stainless steel and a model nuclear waste glass and between stainless steel and a ceramic waste form. The accelerated corrosion can be attributed to changes of solution chemistry and local acidity/alkalinity within a confined space, which significantly alter the corrosion of both the waste-form materials and the metallic canisters. The corrosion that is accelerated by the interface interaction between dissimilar materials could profoundly impact the service life of the nuclear waste packages, which, therefore, should be carefully considered when evaluating the performance of waste forms and their packages. Moreover, compatible barriers should be selected to further optimize the performance of the geological repository system.
