Rapid Characterization and Statistical Analysis of High-Volume Field-Harvested Photovoltaic Connectors

Photovoltaic (PV) installations heavily depend on connectors for efficient module and string interconnections without requiring skilled labor. Yet this seemingly innocuous component of PV systems is a leading cause of module failures, multiple high-profile fires, and lawsuits in the PV industry. This work aims to answer critical questions regarding why connectors fail and the contributing factors to their failure. The study involves collecting and analyzing more than 17,000 field-harvested connectors from various solar installations across the United States. The vast dataset, which includes connector metadata, visual inspections, and resistance measurements, provides unprecedented insight into the state of health of PV connectors across the US, including the geographic locations, connector types, and installation practices most prone to failures. The work presented here describes a novel rapid characterization method for processing large numbers of connectors and is supported by parallel forensic analysis to discern the root causes of failures as well as a levelized cost of lifetime model to determine the economic ramifications of connector failure. Ultimately, the findings may inform PV developers about the best practices to extend connector longevity and lead to more resilient and reliable PV systems.

Enhancing PV Inverter Reliability Through Predictive Maintenance: Insights from Retrofitting of PV Inverters

Photovoltaic (PV) systems represent a cornerstone in the global shift toward sustainable energy generation, with inverters serving as the crucial link between solar panels and the grid. Despite their pivotal role, inverters are susceptible to failures, contributing significantly to maintenance events and operational disruptions in large-scale PV plants. This white paper investigates the importance and methodologies of predictive maintenance strategies that monitor the component-level pre-failure signatures on PV inverters. Through a comprehensive survey of literature and industry professionals, insights on preventive maintenance and retrofitting practices have been gathered. The expert elicitation helps shed light on common challenges and opportunities for improving PV system reliability, particularly inverter reliability. By addressing these challenges, the white paper aims to enhance the long-term viability and effectiveness of solar PV plants in the renewable energy landscape, contributing to the global transition toward environmentally friendly energy generation.

Perovskite Solar Module: Promise and Challenges in Efficiency, Meta‐Stability, and Operational Lifetime

Abstract Perovskite photovoltaics (PVs) are an emerging solar energy generation technology that is nearing commercialization. Despite the unprecedented progress in increasing power conversion efficiency (PCE) for perovskite solar cells (PSCs), up‐scaling lab‐made cells to solar modules remains a challenge. In this work, the recent progress of making perovskite mini‐modules is reviewed. In particular, a database summarizing the module size, performance, hysteresis, and operational lifetimes reported in the literature is built. After analyzing the performance losses from scaling PSCs to mini‐modules based on the data collected from the literature, the current key to high‐performance perovskite mini‐modules is found to be the coating method optimization. If the perovskite layer quality is well reserved, a >24% mini‐module efficiency is projected by only considering the losses from lateral resistivity and laser scribing area. Next, performance characteristics are explored including hysteresis and meta‐stable power outputs that must be overcome to correctly characterize perovskite modules. Finally, current challenges associated with the long‐term stability of perovskite modules are examined and the importance of such durability for commercialization is discussed. It is hoped that the findings in this review provide a bridge for the development of perovskite modules that will lead to commercialization in the near future.

Using Current Data to Detect Hardware Faults at Solar Plants

Monitoring amperage data is an effective means of detecting faults in PV plant data. Utilizing amperage data collected at the combiner box gives plant operators an up-to-date list of faulted equipment, allowing them to coordinate maintenance needs at much shorter intervals than previously. Shorter maintenance intervals will increase PV plant production levels, narrowing the gap between expected and actual PV plant performance. The amperage monitoring method performs at a high level, with a string-outage related fault detection True Positive Rate of 46% and False Positive Rate of 8%.
