Enabling High Stability of Co-Free LiNiO 2 Cathode via a Sulfide-Enriched Cathode Electrolyte Interface

Cobalt-free lithium nickel oxide (LNO) has garnered significant interest as the end member of high-nickel layered oxide cathodes for next-generation batteries. However, its practical performance notably underperforms expectations because of the structural degradation and unstable interfacial chemistry with electrolytes during cycling. Here, in this study, we report that a durable cathode-electrolyte interface (CEI), enriched by in situ formed sulfides and borides, can inhibit LNO structural degradation and suppress Ni ion dissolution. With the CEI protection, the stability of LNO can be remarkably extended, and batteries demonstrate a capacity retention rate of 84% (30 °C) and 79% (50 °C) after 200 cycles at 1C, respectively. These results demonstrate that enriching CEI with sulfur-containing species can effectively stabilize the interfacial chemistry of LNO, particularly at an elevated temperature of 50 °C. This finding provides valuable perspectives on designing electrolytes for cobalt-free LNO and other high-Ni cathodes toward the development of next-generation high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries.

Broadband and Tunable Microwave Absorption Properties from Large Magnetic Loss in Ni–Zn Ferrite

Highly effective electromagnetic (EM) wave absorber materials with strong reflection loss (RL) and a wide absorption bandwidth (EBW) in gigahertz (GHz) frequencies are crucial for advanced wireless applications and portable electronics. Traditional microwave absorbers lack magnetic loss and struggle with impedance matching, while ferrites are stable, exhibit excellent magnetic and dielectric losses, and offer better impedance matching. However, achieving the desired EBW in ferrites remains a challenge, necessitating further composition design. In this study, impedance matching is successfully enhanced and EBW in Ni–Zn ferrite is broadened by successive doping with Mn and Co , without incorporation of any polymer filler. It is found that Ni 0.4 Co 0.1 Zn 0.5 Fe 1.9 Mn 0.1 O 4 material exhibits exceptional EM wave absorption, with a maximum RL of −48.7 dB. It also featured a significant EBW of 10.8 GHz, maintaining a 90% absorption rate (RL < −10 dB) for a thickness of 4.5 mm. These outstanding properties result from substantial magnetic losses and favorable impedance matching. These findings represent a significant step forward in the development of microwave absorber materials, addressing EM wave pollution concerns within GHz frequencies, including the frequency band used in popular 5G technology.

Single-cell multimodal imaging uncovers energy conversion pathways in biohybrids

Microbe–semiconductor biohybrids, which integrate microbial enzymatic synthesis with the light-harvesting capabilities of inorganic semiconductors, have emerged as promising solar-to-chemical conversion systems. Improving the electron transport at the nano–bio interface and inside cells is important for boosting conversion efficiencies, yet the underlying mechanism is challenging to study by bulk measurements owing to the heterogeneities of both constituents. Here we develop a generalizable, quantitative multimodal microscopy platform that combines multi-channel optical imaging and photocurrent mapping to probe such biohybrids down to single- to sub-cell/particle levels. We uncover and differentiate the critical roles of different hydrogenases in the lithoautotrophic bacterium Ralstonia eutropha for bioplastic formation, discover this bacterium’s surprisingly large nanoampere-level electron-uptake capability, and dissect the cross-membrane electron-transport pathways. Furthermore, this imaging platform, and the associated analytical framework, can uncover electron-transport mechanisms in various types of biohybrid, and potentially offers a means to use and engineer R. eutropha for efficient chemical production coupled with photocatalytic materials.

Half-Heusler alloys as emerging high power density thermoelectric cooling materials

Abstract To achieve optimal thermoelectric performance, it is crucial to manipulate the scattering processes within materials to decouple the transport of phonons and electrons. In half-Heusler (hH) compounds, selective defect reduction can significantly improve performance due to the weak electron-acoustic phonon interaction. This study utilized Sb-pressure controlled annealing process to modulate the microstructure and point defects of Nb 0.55 Ta 0.40 Ti 0.05 FeSb compound, resulting in a 100% increase in carrier mobility and a maximum power factor of 78 µW cm −1 K −2 , approaching the theoretical prediction for NbFeSb single crystal. This approach yielded the highest average zT of ~0.86 among hH in the temperature range of 300-873 K. The use of this material led to a 210% enhancement in cooling power density compared to Bi 2 Te 3 -based devices and a conversion efficiency of 12%. These results demonstrate a promising strategy for optimizing hH materials for near-room-temperature thermoelectric applications.

Superior zero thermal expansion dual-phase alloy via boron-migration mediated solid-state reaction

Rapid progress in modern technologies demands zero thermal expansion (ZTE) materials with multi-property profiles to withstand harsh service conditions. Thus far, the majority of documented ZTE materials have shortcomings in different aspects that limit their practical utilization. Here, we report on a superior isotropic ZTE alloy with collective properties regarding wide operating temperature windows, high strength-stiffness, and cyclic thermal stability. A boron-migration-mediated solid-state reaction (BMSR) constructs a salient “plum pudding” structure in a dual-phase Er-Fe-B alloy, where the precursor ErFe 10 phase reacts with the migrated boron and transforms into the target Er 2 Fe 14 B (pudding) and α-Fe phases (plum). The formation of such microstructure helps to eliminate apparent crystallographic texture, tailor and form isotropic ZTE, and simultaneously enhance the strength and toughness of the alloy. These findings suggest a promising design paradigm for comprehensive performance ZTE alloys.

Toward High Conversion Efficiency of Thermoelectric Modules through Synergistical Optimization of Layered Materials

Abstract Waste‐heat electricity generation using high‐efficiency solid‐state conversion technology can significantly decrease dependence on fossil fuels. Here, a synergistical optimization of layered half‐Heusler (hH) materials and module to improve thermoelectric conversion efficiency is reported. This is realized by manufacturing multiple thermoelectric materials with major compositional variations and temperature‐gradient‐coupled carrier distribution by one‐step spark plasma sintering. This strategy provides a solution to overcome the intrinsic concomitants of the conventional segmented architecture that only considers the matching of the figure of merit ( zT ) with the temperature gradient. The current design is dedicated to temperature‐gradient‐coupled resistivity and compatibility matching, optimum zT matching, and reducing contact resistance sources. By enhancing the quality factor of the materials by Sb‐vapor‐pressure‐induced annealing, a superior zT of 1.47 at 973 K is achieved for (Nb, Hf)FeSb hH alloys. Along with the low‐temperature high‐ zT hH alloys of (Nb, Ta, Ti, V)FeSb, the single stage layered hH modules are developed with efficiencies of ≈15.2% and ≈13.5% for the single‐leg and unicouple thermoelectric modules, respectively, under Δ T of 670 K. Therefore, this work has a transformative impact on the design and development of next‐generation thermoelectric generators for any thermoelectric material families.

Zero thermal expansion in non-stoichiometric and single-phase (Hf,Nb)Fe 2.5 alloy

Zero thermal expansion (ZTE) alloys are dimensionally stable under the influence of heat, which is critical in high-precision components but remains rare among single phase materials. This work reports a single phase and nearly isotropic ZTE alloy (Hf 0.8 Nb 0.2 )Fe 2.5 over a wide temperature range of 5–460 K ($α_l ≈ 1.07 × 10^{–6} K^{–1}$) via non-stoichiometric regulation. The introduction of excess Fe breaks the dual-phase nature of parent alloy, extends the magnetic ordering temperature, and induces a spin reorientation. Further, the evolution of magnetic structure versus temperature gives rise to the ZTE behavior. The design concept of changing the internal magnetic interaction through non-stoichiometric regulation provides support for the discovery of novel ZTE materials.

Chemical heterogeneity modulated zero thermal expansion alloy over super-wide temperature range

Chemical heterogeneity is usually avoided in solution chemistry, but it may still occur with sometimes dramatic effects on target materials and their properties. Here, we propose chemical heterogeneity as a counterintuitive strategy to design high-performance zero thermal expansion (ZTE) alloys. We apply this approach in a Hf-Ti-Fe alloy with excess Fe in the Hf/Ti sublattice and produce Hf/Ti concentration alternations at the micro level. Such chemical heterogeneity regulates local magnetic interactions in alloy and triggers a dispersed magnetic phase transition that modulates the thermal expansions at the micro level and hence results in a remarkable ZTE behavior over a super-wide temperature window from 10 to 480 K. This mechanism is supported by comprehensive studies on morphological microstructures, crystal and magnetic structures, and theoretical calculations. The strategy of local chemical heterogeneity opens up an avenue to design ZTE and the related functional materials directly via microstructure engineering.

A universal all-solid synthesis for high throughput production of halide perovskite

Abstract Halide perovskites show ubiquitous presences in growing fields at both fundamental and applied levels. Discovery, investigation, and application of innovative perovskites are heavily dependent on the synthetic methodology in terms of time-/yield-/effort-/energy- efficiency. Conventional wet chemistry method provides the easiness for growing thin film samples, but represents as an inefficient way for bulk crystal synthesis. To overcome these, here we report a universal solid state-based route for synthesizing high-quality perovskites, by means of simultaneously applying both electric and mechanical stress fields during the synthesis, i.e., the electrical and mechanical field-assisted sintering technique. We employ various perovskite compositions and arbitrary geometric designs for demonstration in this report, and establish such synthetic route with uniqueness of ultrahigh yield, fast processing and solvent-free nature, along with bulk products of exceptional quality approaching to single crystals. We exemplify the applications of the as-synthesized perovskites in photodetection and thermoelectric as well as other potentials to open extra chapters for future technical development.

Thermoelectric coolers for high-power-density 3D electronics heat management

Future advancements in three-dimensional (3D) electronics require robust thermal management methodology. Thermoelectric coolers (TECs) are reliable and solid-state heat pumping devices with high cooling capacity that can meet the requirements of emerging 3D microelectronic devices. In this work, we first provide the design of TECs for electronics cooling using a computational model and then experimentally validate the main predictions. Key device parameters such as device thickness, leg density, and contact resistance were studied to understand their influence on the performance of TECs. Our results show that it is possible to achieve high cooling power density through optimization of TE leg height and packing density. Scaling of TECs is shown to provide ultra-high cooling power density.

Conformal High-Power-Density Half-Heusler Thermoelectric Modules: A Pathway toward Practical Power Generators

Thermoelectric generators (TEGs) exploiting the Seebeck effect provide a promising solution for waste heat recovery. Among the large number of thermoelectric (TE) materials, half-Heusler (hH) alloys are leading candidates for medium- to high-temperature power generation applications. However, the fundamental challenge in this field has been inhomogeneous material properties at large wafer diameters, insufficient power output from the modules, and rigid form factors of TE modules. This has restricted the transition of TEGs in practical applications for over three decades. Here, we successfully demonstrate large diameter wafers with uniform TE properties, high-power conformal hH TE modules for high-temperature application, and their direct integration on flue gas platforms, such as cylindrical tubes, to form large area flexible TEGs. This new conformal architecture design provides a breakthrough toward medium-/high-temperature TEGs over the conventional BiTe- and polymer-based flexible TEG design. In this work, a variable fill factor and greater flexibility due to the conformal design result in higher device performance as compared to conventional rigid TEG devices. Modules with 72-couple hH legs exhibit a device high-power-density of 3.13 W cm-2 and a total output power of 56.6 W under a temperature difference of 570 degrees C. These results provide a promising pathway toward widespread utilization of thermoelectric technology into the waste heat recovery application and will have a significant impact on the development of practical thermal to electrical converters.

Plastic and low-cost axial zero thermal expansion alloy by a natural dual-phase composite

Zero thermal expansion (ZTE) alloys possess unique dimensional stability, high thermal and electrical conductivities. Their practical application under heat and stress is however limited by their inherent brittleness because ZTE and plasticity are generally exclusive in a single-phase material. Besides, the performance of ZTE alloys is highly sensitive to change of compositions, so conventional synthesis methods such as alloying or the design of multiphase to improve its thermal and mechanical properties are usually inapplicable. In this study, by adopting a one-step eutectic reaction method, we overcome this challenge. A natural dual-phase composite with ZTE and plasticity was synthesized by melting 4 atom% holmium with pure iron. The dual-phase alloy shows moderate plasticity and strength, axial zero thermal expansion, and stable thermal cycling performance as well as low cost. By using synchrotron X-ray diffraction, in-situ neutron diffraction and microscopy, the critical mechanism of dual-phase synergy on both thermal expansion regulation and mechanical property enhancement is revealed. These results demonstrate that eutectic reaction is likely to be a universal and effective method for the design of high-performance intermetallic-compound-based ZTE alloys.

Stable Tetrasubstituted Quinone Redox Reservoir for Enhancing Decoupled Hydrogen and Oxygen Evolution

In this report, we discuss Redox reservoirs (RRs) that may be used to decouple the two half-reactions of water electrolysis, enabling the spatial and temporal separation of hydrogen and oxygen evolution. Organic RRs are appealing candidates for this application; however, their instability limits their utility. Here we show that a tetrathioether-substituted quinone, tetramercaptopropanesulfonate quinone (TMQ), exhibits significantly enhanced stability relative to anthraquinone-2,7-disulfonate, the most effective organic RR reported previously. The enhanced stability, confirmed by symmetric flow-battery experiments under relevant conditions, enables the stable electrochemical production of H 2 and O 2 in a continuous-flow electrolysis cell. The reduced RR, tetramercaptopropanesulfonate hydroquinone, is not susceptible to decomposition, whereas the oxidized state, TMQ, undergoes slow decomposition, evident only after sustained operation (>60 h). The analysis of the byproducts provides a basis for a decomposition mechanism, establishing a foundation for the design of new organic RRs with even better performance.

Covalent 2D Cr 2 Te 3 ferromagnet

To broaden the scope of van der Waals 2D magnets, we report the synthesis and magnetism of covalent 2D magnetic Cr 2 Te 3 with a thickness down to one-unit-cell. The 2D Cr 2 Te 3 crystals exhibit robust ferromagnetism with a Curie temperature of 180 K, a large perpendicular anisotropy of 7 × 10 5 J m -3 , and a high coercivity of ~4.6 kG at 20 K. First principles calculations further show a transition from canted to collinear ferromagnetism, a transition from perpendicular to in-plane anisotropy, and emergent half-metallic behavior in atomically-thin Cr 2 Te 3 , suggesting its potential application for injecting carriers with high spin polarization into spintronic devices.

Modular Electrochemical Synthesis Using a Redox Reservoir Paired with Independent Half-Reactions

Electrochemical synthesis of high-value chemicals using renewable electricity could lead to sustainability advantages over conventional chemical manufacturing. The tight coupling between paired anodic and cathodic reactions in conventional electrochemical processes, however, constrains the products and their efficiencies. Here, we demonstrate a strategy to achieve modular electrochemical synthesis (ModES) of different chemicals by decoupling and pairing the oxidative and reductive half-reactions with a heterogeneous redox reservoir (RR). Specifically, sodium nickel hexacyanoferrate (NaNiHCF) can serve as a robust and reversible RR that enables the modular production of several strong oxidants, hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O2) and sodium persulfate (Na 2 S 2 O 8 ) or active chlorine, in separate RR-coupled electrochemical processes. The system’s excellent performance and operational stability is demonstrated by continuous operation over 100 cycles (~36 h) to produce H 2 O 2 and Na 2 S 2 O 8 with a high voltage efficiency. The concept presented here highlights the prospects for using RRs to enable efficient, modular, and on-demand electrochemical synthesis of valuable chemicals.
