North America’s Potential for an Environmentally Sustainable Nickel, Manganese, and Cobalt Battery Value Chain

The Detroit Big Three General Motors (GMs), Ford, and Stellantis predict that electric vehicle (EV) sales will comprise 40–50% of the annual vehicle sales by 2030. Among the key components of LIBs, the LiNixMnyCo1−x−yO2 cathode, which comprises nickel, manganese, and cobalt (NMC) in various stoichiometric ratios, is widely used in EV batteries. This review reveals NMC cathodes from laboratory research. Furthermore, this study examines the environmental effect of NMC cathode production for EV batteries (including coating technologies), encompassing aspects such as energy consumption, water usage, and air emissions. Although gaps persist in NMC cathode environmental assessments (NMC111, NMC532, NMC622, and NMC811), limited life cycle assessments “(LCA)” have been conducted. Most available data originate from Asia (primarily China), accounting for 85% of the production of EV LIB cathode materials. The concept of battery passports for data collection on LIB components has been proposed to facilitate material traceability as a system for ensuring a sustainable supply chain for critical minerals. The automotive industry’s shift to electrification necessitates a sustainable supply chain from mine to vehicle end-of-life. As the critical mineral supply moves from Asia to North America, environmentally friendly industrial methods must be studied to provide this supply chain direction.

Nonnegligible cascading impacts of global urban expansion on net primary productivity

Accelerated global urban expansion not only directly occupies surrounding ecosystems, but also induces cascading losses of natural vegetation elsewhere through cropland displacement. Yet, how such effects alter the net primary productivity (NPP) worldwide remains unclear. Here, we quantified the direct and cascading impacts of global urban expansion on terrestrial NPP from 1992 to 2020 and projected the impacts under the shared socioeconomic pathways framework by 2100. We found that global urban expansion caused a cascading loss of 29.2 to 63.9 Tg C/year of terrestrial NPP in the historical period (1992–2020), accounting for 13–29% of the total direct NPP loss. Instead, our projections indicate that during 2020–2100, mainly due to the increased relocation of displaced croplands to low-productive ecosystems, the cascading impacts gradually change from negative to positive, leading to a net NPP increase. Such an increase may offset up to 7% of the total direct NPP loss, better balancing crop compensation with NPP maintenance. Our findings highlight the unexpected large cascading impacts of urban expansion on the carbon cycle and stress the importance of regulating land transitions to curtail land-use emissions.

One-Step Regeneration of Hairy Roots to Induce High Tanshinone Plants in Salvia miltiorrhiza

Salvia miltiorrhiza is a traditional Chinese medicinal plant of Labiatae, which has been widely utilized to treat a variety of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. However, due to the long growth cycle, low content of active ingredients, and serious quality deterioration of S. miltiorrhiza , the use of biotechnology to improve S. miltiorrhiza to meet the growing demand for clinical applications has become a research hotspot. In this study, a novel one-step hairy root regeneration method was developed, which could rapidly obtain hairy roots and regenerated plants with high tanshinone content. By optimizing the parameters of Agrobacterium rhizogenes transformation in S. miltiorrhiza , it was finally established that the explants were infected in Ar.qual (OD 600 = 0.6) for 10 min, co-cultured for 3 days, and then screened on the screening medium containing 7.5 mg/l hygromycin, the maximum transformation frequency can reach 73.85%. GFP and PCR detection yielded a total of 9 positive transgenic hairy root lines and 11 positive transgenic regenerated plants. SmGGPPS1 was successfully overexpressed in positive transgenic regenerated plants, according to the results of qRT-PCR. The content of tanshinone IIA and cryptotanshinone were dramatically enhanced in transgenic regenerated plants and hairy roots by Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography analysis. Based on the Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of S. miltiorrhiza , this study developed a new method for regenerating plants with transgenic hairy roots. This method provides a foundation for the breeding of S. miltiorrhiza and the sustainable development of medicinal plant resources, as well as provides a useful reference for the application of other species.

Singlet Fission Driven by Anisotropic Vibronic Coupling in Single-Crystalline Pentacene

Vibronic coupling is believed to play an important role in siglet fission, wherein a photoexcited singlet exciton is converted into two triplet excitons. In the present study, we examine the role of vibronic coupling in singlet fission using polarized transient absorption microscopy and ab initio simulations on single-crystalline pentacene. It was found that singlet fission in pentacene is greatly facilitated by the vibrational coherence of a 35.0 cm(-1) phonon, where anisotropic coherence persists extensively for a few picoseconds. This coherence-preserving phonon that drives the anisotropic singlet fission is made possible by a unique cross-axial charge-transfer intermediate state. In the same fashion, this phonon was also found to predominantly drive the quantum decohence of a correlated triplet pair to form a decoupled triplet dimer. Moreover, our transient kinetic experimental data illustrates notable directional anisotropicity of the singlet fission rate in single-crystalline pentacene.

Stabilizing and understanding the interface between nickel-rich cathode and PEO-based electrolyte by lithium niobium oxide coating for high-performance all-solid-state batteries

The pursuit of high energy density and safe lithium ion batteries (LIBs) is the urgent goal for the development of next-generation electric vehicles (EVs). All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) with the combination of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) and Ni-rich lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811) cathode are promising candidates for EVs due to their improved energy density and safety. However, the low electrochemical oxidation window of PEO-based SPE and the instability of NMC811 at the charge/discharge process seriously restrict the battery performance. Herein, a high voltage stable solid-state electrolyte layer lithium niobium oxide (LNO) is coated on the NMC811 electrode surface by atomic layer deposition for stabilizing NMC811-PEO solid polymer batteries. Electrochemical tests show that LNO coating can stabilize the NMC811 active materials and mitigate the decomposition of SPE upon the cycling process, rendering a good performance of NMC811-PEO solid polymer battery. Mechanism studies by SEM, STEM, XAS, and XPS disclose that the uncoated NMC811 suffers from chemomechanical degradations along with oxygen release triggering the decomposition of SPE, which results in unstable cathodic electrolyte interphase. With LNO coating, chemomechanical degradations and oxygen release are inhibited and the decomposition of SPE is mitigated. This paper renders a stable and high-performance high-energy-density SSB for high voltage application, which paves the way toward next-generation solid-state LIBs.

Engineering Surface Oxygenated Functionalities on Commercial Carbon toward Ultrafast Sodium Storage in Ether-Based Electrolytes

The pursuit of a high-capacity anode material has been urgently required for commercializing sodium-ion batteries with a high energy density and an improved working safety. In the absence of thermodynamically stable sodium intercalated compounds with graphite, constructing nanostructures with expanded interlayer distances is still the mainstream option for developing high-performance carbonaceous anodes. In this regard, a surface-functionalized and pore-forming strategy through a facile CO 2 thermal etching route was rationally adopted to engineer negligible oxygenated functionalities on commercial carbon for boosting the sodium storage process. Benefitted from the abundant ionic/electronic pathways and more active reaction sites in the microporous structure with noticeable pseudocapacitive behaviors, the functionalized porous carbon could achieve a highly reversible capacity of 505 mA h g -1 at 50 mA g -1 , an excellent rate performance of 181 mA h g -1 at 16,000 mA g -1 , and an exceptional rate cycle stability of 176 mA h g -1 at 3200 mA g -1 over 1000 cycles. These outstanding electrochemical properties should be ascribed to a synergistic mechanism, fully utilizing the graphitic and amorphous structures for synchronous intercalations of sodium ions and solvated sodium ion compounds, respectively. Finally, the controllable generation and evolution of a robust but thin solid electrolyte interphase film with the emergence of obvious capacitive reactions on the defective surface, favoring the rapid migration of sodium ions and solvated species, also contribute to a remarkable electrochemical performance of this porous carbon black.

Unveiling the critical role of interfacial ionic conductivity in all-solid-state lithium batteries

Advancement of all-solid-state lithium-ion (Li + ) batteries (ASSLIBs) has been hindered by the large interfacial resistance mainly originating from interfacial reactions between oxide cathodes and solid-state sulfide electrolytes (SEs). To suppress the interfacial reactions, an interfacial coating layer between cathodes and SEs is indispensable. However, the kinetics of interfacial Li + transport across the coating layer has not been well understood yet. Herein, we tune the interfacial ionic conductivity of the coating layer LiNb 0.5 Ta 0.5 O 3 (LNTO) by manipulating post-annealing temperature. It is found that the interfacial ionic conductivity determines interfacial Li + transport kinetics and enhancing the interfacial ionic conductivity can significantly boost the electrochemical performance of SE-based ASSLIBs. A representative cathode LiNi 0.5 Mn 0.3 Co 0.2 O 2 coated by LNTO with the highest interfacial ionic conductivity exhibits a high initial capacity of 152 mAh.g -1 at 0.1 C and 107.5 mAh.g -1 at 1C. This work highlights the importance of increasing interfacial ionic conductivity for high-performance SE-based ASSLIBs.
