Heterogeneous Nucleating Agent for High‐Boiling‐Point Nonhalogenated Solvent‐Processed Organic Solar Cells and Modules

Abstract High‐boiling‐point nonhalogenated solvents are superior solvents to produce large‐area organic solar cells (OSCs) in industry because of their wide processing window and low toxicity; while, these solvents with slow evaporation kinetics will lead excessive aggregation of state‐of‐the‐art small molecule acceptors (e.g. L8‐BO), delivering serious efficiency losses. Here, a heterogeneous nucleating agent strategy is developed by grafting oligo (ethylene glycol) side‐chains on L8‐BO (BTO‐BO). The formation energy of the obtained BTO‐BO; while, changing from liquid in a solvent to a crystalline phase, is lower than that of L8‐BO irrespective of the solvent type. When BTO‐BO is added as the third component into the active layer (e.g. PM6:L8‐BO), it easily assembles to form numerous seed crystals, which serve as nucleation sites to trigger heterogeneous nucleation and increase nucleation density of L8‐BO through strong hydrogen bonding interactions even in high‐boiling‐point nonhalogenated solvents. Therefore, it can effectively suppress excessive aggregation during growth, achieving ideal phase‐separation active layer with small domain sizes and high crystallinity. The resultant toluene‐processed OSCs exhibit a record power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.42% (certificated 19.12%) with excellent operational stability. The strategy also has superior advantages in large‐scale devices, showing a 15.03‐cm 2 module with a record PCE of 16.35% (certificated 15.97%).

Precise synthesis and photovoltaic properties of giant molecule acceptors

Series of giant molecule acceptors DY, TY and QY with two, three and four small molecule acceptor subunits are synthesized by a stepwise synthetic method and used for systematically investigating the influence of subunit numbers on the structure-property relationship from small molecule acceptor YDT to giant molecule acceptors and to polymerized small molecule acceptor PY-IT. Among these acceptors-based devices, the TY-based film shows proper donor/acceptor phase separation, higher charge transfer state yield and longer charge transfer state lifetime. Combining with the highest electron mobility, more efficient exciton dissociation and lower charge carrier recombination properties, the TY-based device exhibits the highest power conversion efficiency of 16.32%. These results indicate that the subunit number in these acceptors has significant influence on their photovoltaic properties. This stepwise synthetic method of giant molecule acceptors will be beneficial to diversify their structures and promote their applications in high-efficiency and stable organic solar cells.

Progressive evolutions of non-fused ring electron acceptors toward efficient organic solar cells with improved photocurrent and reduced energy loss

Resolving competitive counterbalance between high external quantum efficiency (EQE) response and low energy loss is critical for achieving efficient organic solar cells (OSCs), including those based on low-cost non-fused-ring electron acceptor (NFREA). In this work, we performed a comparable study by utilizing four NFREAs with progressive evolutions in molecular structures, energetic levels, spectral coverages, crystallinity, etc, to pair with polymer donor J52. By regulating the terminal and side chains of NFREAs, the enhanced intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) effect allows O-PC-EH possessing the broader spectral coverage for higher photocurrent, the reduced energetic offset enables O-PC-EH-based device owning higher luminescence property for lower energy loss, the strengthened crystallinity endows O-PC-EH-based blend better charge transport property for less charge recombination. With those comprehensive managements from molecule to blend properties, the J52:O-PC-EH-based OSCs achieved the best efficiency of 14.4% (certified: 14.1%) with benefits in all the three device parameters. Here, this work reveals the importance of fine-tuning molecular structures of NFREAs according to paired polymer donor for maximizing the device performances.

Near-infrared absorbing acceptor with suppressed triplet exciton generation enabling high performance tandem organic solar cells

Reducing the energy loss of sub-cells is critical for high performance tandem organic solar cells, while it is limited by the severe non-radiative voltage loss via the formation of non-emissive triplet excitons. Herein, we develop an ultra-narrow bandgap acceptor BTPSeV-4F through replacement of terminal thiophene by selenophene in the central fused ring of BTPSV-4F, for constructing efficient tandem organic solar cells. The selenophene substitution further decrease the optical bandgap of BTPSV-4F to 1.17 eV and suppress the formation of triplet exciton in the BTPSV-4F-based devices. The organic solar cells with BTPSeV-4F as acceptor demonstrate a higher power conversion efficiency of 14.2% with a record high short-circuit current density of 30.1 mA cm –2 and low energy loss of 0.55 eV benefitted from the low non-radiative energy loss due to the suppression of triplet exciton formation. We also develop a high-performance medium bandgap acceptor O1-Br for front cells. By integrating the PM6:O1-Br based front cells with the PTB7-Th:BTPSeV-4F based rear cells, the tandem organic solar cell demonstrates a power conversion efficiency of 19%. The results indicate that the suppression of triplet excitons formation in the near-infrared-absorbing acceptor by molecular design is an effective way to improve the photovoltaic performance of the tandem organic solar cells.

Tethered Small-Molecule Acceptors Simultaneously Enhance the Efficiency and Stability of Polymer Solar Cells

For polymer solar cells (PSCs), the mixture of polymer donors and small-molecule acceptors (SMAs) is fine-tuned to realize a favorable kinetically trapped morphology and thus a commercially viable device efficiency. However, the thermodynamic relaxation of the mixed domains within the blend raises concerns related to the long-term operational stability of the devices, especially in the record-holding Y-series SMAs. Here, a new class of dimeric Y6-based SMAs tethered with differential flexible spacers is reported to regulate their aggregation and relaxation behavior. In their polymer blends with PM6, it is found that they favor an improved structural order relative to that of Y6 counterpart. Most importantly, the tethered SMAs show large glass transition temperatures to suppress the thermodynamic relaxation in mixed domains. For the high-performing dimeric blend, an unprecedented open circuit voltage of 0.87 V is realized with a conversion efficiency of 17.85%, while those of regular Y6-base devices only reach 0.84 V and 16.93%, respectively. Most importantly, the dimer-based device possesses substantially reduced burn-in efficiency loss, retaining more than 80% of the initial efficiency after operating at the maximum power point under continuous illumination for 700 h. In conclusion, the tethering approach provides a new direction to develop PSCs with high efficiency and excellent operating stability.

Terpolymer Donor with Inside Alkyl Substituents on Thiophene π ‐Bridges toward Thiazolothiazole A 2 ‐Unit Enables 18.21% Efficiency of Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract PM6 is a widely used D–A copolymer donor in the polymer solar cells (PSCs). Incorporating second electron‐withdrawing (A 2 ) units into PM6 backbone by ternary D–A 1 –D–A 2 random copolymerization strategy is an effective approach to further improve its photovoltaic performance. Here, the authors synthesize the PM6‐based terpolymers by introducing thiazolothiazole as the A 2 units connecting with thiophene π‐bridges attaching alkyl substituent towards the A 2 unit (PMT‐CT) or towards D‐unit (PMT‐FT), and study the effect of the alkyl substituent position on the photovoltaic performance of them. Two terpolymers PMT‐FT‐10 and PMT‐CT‐10 are obtained by incorporating 10% A 2 units in the terpolymers. The film of PMT‐CT‐10 shows slightly up‐shifted highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels while better co‐planar structure than that of PMT‐FT‐10. Meanwhile, the PMT‐CT‐10:Y6 blend film exhibits better molecular packing properties, more proper phase separation and more balanced hole and electron mobilities, which are beneficial to more efficient exciton dissociation, efficient charge transport and weaker bimolecular recombination. Consequently, the PMT‐CT‐10 based PSCs obtain the highest power conversion efficiency of 18.21%. The results indicate that side chain position on the thiophene π‐bridges influence the device performance of the terpolymer donors, and PMT‐CT‐10 is a high efficiency polymer donor for the PSCs.

Composition‐Conditioning Agent for Doped Spiro‐OMeTAD to Realize Highly Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract The doped Spiro‐OMeTAD hole transport layer (HTL) formed using the lithium bis(trifluoromethane) sulfonimide salt and 4‐tert‐butylpyridine with phenethylammonium iodide surface treatment on a perovskite film has continuously dominated the record power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of perovskite solar cells (pero‐SCs). However, unstable HTL compositions and iodide salts can cause severe device degradation. In this study, an HTL composition‐conditioning agent (CCA), Spiro‐BD‐2OEG, is designed, which contains a Spiro‐OMeTAD‐like backbone, functional pyridine units, and oligo (ethylene glycol) chains. This finely designed CCA presents good miscibility with Spiro‐OMeTAD and its dopants and acts as a conditioning agent through weak bond interactions. As a result, the CCA‐regulated HTL shows a pinhole‐free and smooth morphology with enhanced Spiro‐OMeTAD ordering and improves dopant stability. In addition, the gradient‐distributed CCA in the HTL can narrow the energy level offset with the valence band of the perovskite. The resultant pero‐SCs exhibit an excellent PCE of 24.19% without any interface treatment and weak size dependence. A remarkable PCE of 22.63% is obtained even for a 1.004‐cm 2 device. Importantly, the strategy shows good universality and significantly promotes the long‐term stability of the pero‐SCs based on the classical doped Spiro‐OMeTAD.

High performance polymerized small molecule acceptor by synergistic optimization on $\pi$-bridge linker and side chain

The polymerized small-molecule acceptors have attracted great attention for application as polymer acceptor in all-polymer solar cells recently. The modification of small molecule acceptor building block and the π-bridge linker is an effective strategy to improve the photovoltaic performance of the polymer acceptors. In this work, we synthesized a new polymer acceptor PG-IT2F which is a modification of the representative polymer acceptor PY-IT by replacing its upper linear alkyl side chains on the small molecule building block with branched alkyl chains and attaching difluorene substituents on its thiophene π-bridge linker. Through this synergistic optimization, PG-IT2F possesses more suitable phase separation, increased charge transportation, better exciton dissociation, lower bimolecular recombination, and longer charge transfer state lifetime than PY-IT in their polymer solar cells with PM6 as polymer donor. Therefore, the devices based on PM6:PG-IT2F demonstrated a high power conversion efficiency of 17.24%, which is one of the highest efficiency reported for the binary all polymer solar cells to date. This work indicates that the synergistic regulation of small molecule acceptor building block and π-bridge linker plays a key role in designing and developing highly efficient polymer acceptors.

Highly Efficient Layer-by-Layer Processed Quaternary Organic Solar Cells with Improved Charge Transport and Reduced Energy Loss

We report how to improve charge transport properties and reduce energy losses are the two main challenges of organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, a new device fabrication strategy that combines the layer-by-layer (LBL) method and a quaternary active layer is demonstrated to realize highly efficient photovoltaic performance of the OSCs based on PM6:PM7/Y6:O1-2F. The introduction of the second donor, PM7,forms a cascade energy-level alignment with PM6 that facilitates effective charge transfer. The second acceptor, O1-2F, which is poorly miscible with the donors, helps to reduce the miscibility between the donors and acceptors, and thus delivers a more desirable vertical phase separation of the active layer. Furthermore, the alloy acceptor of O1-2F and Y6 can optimize the horizontal and vertical morphology of the active layer, forming an effective charge separation and continuous charge transport channel. As a result, the PM6:PM7/Y6:O1-2F system shows a distinct increase in charge mobility and a reduced nonradiative lossΔVnrof 0.231 V compared to the PM6/Y6 system, achieving a high-power conversion efficiency of18.23%. The results indicate that the quaternary LBL OSCs are promising for future large-scale and industrial manufacture of the OSCs.

Siloxane-functional small molecule acceptor for high-performance organic solar cells with 16.6% efficiency

As one of the simple but most effective molecular design strategies, side-chain engineering has been widely employed to modify the photoelectric properties of active layer materials for boosting the photovoltaic performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). In this work, a functionalized small molecule acceptor (SMA) named BTSi-4F with a bulky siloxane-terminated solubilizing group as side-chains, derived from a classical SMA of Y6, was designed and synthesized. The results demonstrate that the introduction of siloxane-functional terminated groups into SMA not only affects the optical absorption and molecular energy levels, but also regulates the miscibility between the polymer donor and SMA. Compared to the original Y6, BTSi-4F exhibits a better solubility, upshifted lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level, more ordered molecular packing, and higher electron-mobility. Matched with a wide bandgap polymer donor PM6, the chlorobenzene-processed OSCs based on PM6:BTSi-4F achieved a superior power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.6% with both high open-circuit voltage (V oc ) of 0.90 V and high fill factor (FF) of 0.77, while the devices based on PM6:Y6 obtained a much lower PCE of 13.0% with a V oc of 0.81 V and FF of 0.69 under the same conditions. This work offers a promising molecular design strategy of siloxane-terminated side chain engineering to develop high-performance SMAs for efficient OSCs.

16.52% Efficiency All-Polymer Solar Cells with High Tolerance of the Photoactive Layer Thickness

All-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) have drawn growing attention and achieved tremendous progress recently, but their power conversion efficiency (PCE) still lags behind small-molecule-acceptor (SMA)-based PSCs due to the relative difficulty on morphology control of polymer photoactive blends. Here, in this work, low-cost PTQ10 is introduced as a second polymer donor (a third component) into the PM6:PY-IT blend to finely tune the energy-level matching and microscopic morphology of the polymer blend photoactive layer. The addition of PTQ10 decreases the π–π stacking distance, and increases the π–π stacking coherence length and the ordered face-on molecular packing orientation, which improves the charge separation and transport in the photoactive layer. Moreover, the deeper highest occupied molecular orbital energy level of the PTQ10 polymer donor than PM6 leads to higher open-circuit voltage of the ternary all-PSCs. As a result, a PCE of 16.52% is achieved for ternary all-PSCs, which is one of the highest PCEs for all-PSCs. In addition, the ternary devices exhibit a high tolerance of the photoactive layer thickness with high PCEs of 15.27% and 13.91% at photoactive layer thickness of ≈205 and ≈306 nm, respectively, which are the highest PCEs so far for all-PSCs with a thick photoactive layer.
