Tetrahydrofuran Processable Organic Solar Cells with 19.45% Efficiency Realized by Introducing High Molecular Dipole Unit Into the Terpolymer

Developing organic solar cells (OSCs) processable with halogen‐free, non‐aromatic solvents is crucial for practical applications, yet challenging due to the limited solubility of most photoactive materials. Here, this study introduces high‐performance terpolymers processable in tetrahydrofuran (THF) by incorporating dithienophthalimide (DPI) into the PM6 backbone. DPI extends the absorption band, lowers HOMO levels, and improves THF solubility and film crystallinity through its large dipole moment effect. Optimal PBD‐10:L8‐BO devices processed with THF achieved a competitive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.79%, approaching chloroform‐processed devices (19.04%). By introducing PBTz‐F as a second donor, ternary OSCs reached an impressive 19.45% PCE when processed with THF. This improvement stems from enhanced photon generation, improved morphology, better charge transport, longer exciton lifetimes, efficient charge dissociation and collection, and suppressed recombination. These PCEs of 18.79% and 19.45% for binary and ternary blend OSCs, respectively, represent the highest reported efficiencies for OSCs processed with halogen‐free, non‐aromatic solvents. This work demonstrates significant progress in eco‐friendly OSC fabrication, paving the way for more sustainable and commercially viable organic photovoltaic technologies.

Developing Benzodithiophene-Free donor polymer for 19.36% efficiency Green-Solvent-Processable organic solar cells

Here, in this work, a newly benzodithiophene-free D-A polymer donor, named PDTP-BDD, was developed for realizing green-solvent processed high-performance OSCs. By bridging two electron-rich unit of dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyridin-5(4H)-one (DTP) and electron-deficient benzo[1,2-c:4,5c']dithiophene-4,8-dione (BDD) with thiophene units, PDTP-BDD possesses high absorption in the short wavelength range and a deep HOMO energy level. The rigid building blocks also make PDTP-BDD has strong aggregation and poor solubility in common halogen-free solvents (such as o-xylene) at room temperature, but it is readily dissolved and disaggregated at high temperature (120 °C). After cooling down to a lower temperature (60 °C), PDTP-BDD self-assembled and pre-aggregated slowly in the solution at a long time. By employing a delayed processing strategy in the layer-by-layer processed OSCs (LbL-OSCs), an optimized fibril network of the underling layer was realized, enabling the permeation of acceptor into the donor network. The optimized PDTP-BDD/L8-BO-based LbL-OSCs realized a high PCE of 18.42 %. By adding a small amount of D18 to further optimize the PDTP-BDD fibril network, an impressive PCE of 19.36 % was achieved finally in the resulting ternary LbL-OSCs, which is the highest value for OSCs processed by halogen-free solvents.

Improving Cooperative Interactions Between Halogenated Aromatic Additives and Aromatic Side Chain Acceptors for Realizing 19.22% Efficiency Polymer Solar Cells

Processing additive plays an important role in the standard operation procedures for fabricating top performing polymer solar cells (PSCs) through efficient interactions with key photovoltaic materials. However, improving interaction study of acceptor materials to high performance halogenated aromatic additives such as diiodobenzene (DIB) is a widely neglected route for molecular engineering toward more efficient device performances. Here, in this work, two novel Y-type acceptor molecules of BTP-TT and BTP-TTS with different aromatic side chains on the outer positions are designed and synthesized. The resulting aromatic side chains significantly enhanced the interactions between the acceptor molecules and DIB through an arene/halogenated arene interaction, which improved the crystallinity of the acceptor molecules and induced a polymorph with better photovoltaic performances. Thus, high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 18.04% and 19.22% are achieved in binary and ternary blend devices using BTP-TTS as acceptor and DIB as additive. Aromatic side chain engineering for improving additive interactions is proved to be an effective strategy for achieving much higher performance photovoltaic materials and devices.

Benzo[d]thiazole Based Wide Bandgap Donor Polymers Enable 19.54% Efficiency Organic Solar Cells Along with Desirable Batch-to-Batch Reproducibility and General Applicability

The limited selection pool of high-performance wide bandgap (WBG) polymer donors is a bottleneck problem of the nonfullerene acceptor (NFA) based organic solar cells (OSCs) that impedes the further improvement of their photovoltaic performances. In this work, a series of new WBG polymers, namely PH-BTz, PS-BTz, PF-BTz, and PCl-BTz, are developed by using the bicyclic difluoro-benzo[d]thiazole (BTz) as the acceptor block and benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (BDT) derivatives as the donor units. By introducing S, F, and Cl atoms to the alkylthienyl sidechains on BDT, the resulting polymers exhibit lowered energy levels and enhanced aggregation properties. The fluorinated PBTz-F not only exhibits a low-lying HOMO level, but also has stronger face-on packing order and results in more uniform fibril-like interpenetrating networks in the related PF-BTz:L8-BO blend. A high-power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.57% is achieved. Moreover, PBTz-F also exhibits a good batch-to-batch reproducibility and general applicability. In addition, ternary blend OSCs based on the host PBTz-F:L8-BO blend and PM6 guest donor exhibits a further enhanced PCE of 19.54%, which is among the highest values of OSCs.

B—N–Bond–Embedded Triplet Terpolymers with Small Singlet–Triplet Energy Gaps for Suppressing Non–Radiative Recombination and Improving Blend Morphology in Organic Solar Cells

Suppressing the photon energy loss (E loss ), especially the non-radiative loss, is of importance to further improve the device performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, typical π-conjugated semiconductors possess a large singlet–triplet energy gap (ΔE ST ), leading to a lower triplet state than charge transfer state and contributing to a non-radiative loss channel of the photocurrent by the triplet state. Herein, a series of triplet polymer donors are developed by introducing a BNIDT block into the PM6 polymer backbone. Further, the high electron affinity of BNIDT and the opposite resonance effect of the B—N bond in BNIDT results in a lowered highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and a largely reduced ΔE ST . Moreover, the morphology of the active blends is also optimized by fine-tuning the BNIDT content. Therefore, non-radiative recombination via the terminal triplet loss channels and morphology traps is effectively suppressed. The PNB-3 (with 3% BNIDT):L8-BO device exhibits both small ΔE ST and optimized morphology, favoring more efficient charge transfer and transport. Finally, the simultaneously enhanced V oc of 0.907 V, J sc of 26.59 mA cm –2 , and FF of 78.86% contribute to a champion PCE of 19.02%. Therefore, introducing B—N bonds into benchmark polymers is a possible avenue toward higher-performance of OSCs.

Tradeoff between Intermolecular Interaction and Backbone Disorder by High Molecular Dipole Block for Improving Blend Morphology of Polymer Solar Cells

Constructing terpolymer has attracted increasing attention as a strategy to improve the performance of polymer solar cell. Terpolymer usually offers an opportunity to lower the frontier molecular orbital energy level, introduces additional absorption band and sometimes optimizes the morphology of the active blend. Generally, the additional segment in terpolymer backbone inevitably introduces backbone disorder, which causes entropy rises. However, selecting a suitable dipole unit introduces extra driving forces for crystallization by enhancing intermolecular interactions. This provides a handy knob for tradeoff between intermolecular interaction and backbone disorder, thus regulating the blend morphology. In this study, a high dipole and electron-deficient group of pyrrolo[3,4-f ]benzotriazole-5,7(6H)-dione (TzBI) is incorporated into the high-performance donor polymer and a series of terpolymers with different content of TzBI are designed. As expected, the morphology is optimized gradually for improving charge generation and charge transport, also suppressing charge recombination. The champion device with 10% TzBI exhibited a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.36%, which is 5% increase compared to the controlled device. This study presents a charming terpolymer strategy by highly electron-deficient and high dipole segment to realize a tradeoff between intermolecular interaction and backbone disorder, facilitating the optimization of morphology and elevation of fill factor and device efficiency.

Improving the performance of PM6 donor polymer by random ternary copolymerization of BDD and DTBT segments

Developing high-performance wide bandgap polymer donors to match the rapidly growing non-fullerene small molecule acceptors (NF-SMAs) is of great importance to further improve the photovoltaic performances of organic solar cells (OSCs). PM6 and D18 are two leading wide bandgap donor polymers, but their performances are highly sensitive to the molecular weights, which have distinct impact on the morphology and thereby the charge generation and recombination processes. Here, in this work, we reported the random ternary copolymerization of PM6 and D18 segments to develop random terpolymers with finely tuned photoelectronic properties and optimized blend morphology for high-performance OSCs. The resulting random terpolymers (PMD-5, PMD-10, PMD-15 and PMD-20) exhibited finely tuned absorptions, energy levels and blend morphology. The optimal morphology of PMD-15:L8-BO contributed to the fast exciton diffusion and dissociation, efficient charge extraction with suppressed recombination. Thus, the power conversion efficiency was improved from 17.22% of the control PM6 devices and 17.47% of the control D18 devices to 18.12% of PMD-15 based devices, which is the top performance of random terpolymers. Moreover, the PMD-15 exhibited much higher batch-to-batch reproducibility at a broad molecular weight range than that of PM6 and D18, showing promising for practical applications.

Binary Blend All‐Polymer Solar Cells with a Record Efficiency of 17.41% Enabled by Programmed Fluorination Both on Donor and Acceptor Blocks

Abstract Despite remarkable breakthrough made by virtue of “polymerized small‐molecule acceptor (PSMA)” strategy recently, the limited selection pool of high‐performance polymer acceptors and long‐standing challenge in morphology control impede their further developments. Herein, three PSMAs of PYDT‐2F, PYDT‐3F, and PYDT‐4F are developed by introducing different fluorine atoms on the end groups and/or bithiophene spacers to fine‐tune their optoelectronic properties for high‐performance PSMAs. The PSMAs exhibit narrow bandgap and energy levels that match well with PM6 donor. The fluorination promotes the crystallization of the polymer chain for enhanced electron mobility, which is further improved by following n ‐doping with benzyl viologen additive. Moreover, the miscibility is also improved by introducing more fluorine atoms, which promotes the intermixing with PM6 donor. Among them, PYDT‐3F exhibits well‐balanced high crystallinity and miscibility with PM6 donor; thus, the layer‐by‐layer processed PM6/PYDT‐3F film obtains an optimal nanofibril morphology with submicron length and ≈23 nm width of fibrils, facilitating the charge separation and transport. The resulting PM6/PYDT‐3F devices realizes a record high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.41% and fill factor of 77.01%, higher than the PM6/PYDT‐2F (PCE = 16.25%) and PM6/PYDT‐4F (PCE = 16.77%) devices.

Cost-Efficiency balanced polymer acceptors based on lowly fused Dithienopyrrolo[3, 2b]benzothiadiazole for 16.04% efficiency All-Polymer solar cells

All-polymer solar cells (All-PSCs) attracted increasing attention due to the outstanding thermal stability and mechanical properties. The current prevailing polymer acceptors for most efficient All-PSCs are polymerized high-performance small molecule acceptor of Y6, i.e. the dithienothiopheno[3,2-b]-pyrrolobenzothiadiazole (BTTP) based polymers. However, the BTTP-based polymers often show relatively shallow highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level and high figure of merit (FOM), which limit the rational selection of paring donor polymers. Herein, we presented two low-cost polymer acceptors, namely as BTP-T2F and BTP-2T2F, based on lowly fused dithienopyrrolo[3,2b]benzothiadiazole (BTP, removing two thiophene cycles from BTTP). Here the BTP-based polymers exhibited deeper HOMO levels around –5.90 eV, which could match variable donor polymers with low-lying HOMO levels, such as low-cost PTQ10. Additionally, the synthesis was significantly simplified compared to BTTP-based polymers. A power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.32% was achieved in binary blend device containing PTQ10:BTP-2T2F. By adding a miscibility-enhancing PBDTCl-TPD as a third component, the top PCE of 16.04% was obtained in ternary blend All-PSCs. Combining the high device performance and low estimated cost, extraordinary cost-efficiency balance was realized within these BTP-based polymer acceptors.
