Revisiting the capacity-fading mechanism of P2-type sodium layered oxide cathode materials during high-voltage cycling

We report P2-type sodium layered oxide cathode (Na 2/3 Ni 1/3 Mn 2/3 O 2 , P2-NNMO) has attracted great attention as a promising cathode material for sodium ion batteries because of its high specific capacity. However, this material suffers from a rapid capacity fade during high-voltage cycling. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the capacity fade, including intragranular fracture caused by the P2-O2 phase transion, surface structural change, and irreversible lattice oxygen release. Here we systematically investigated the morphological, structural, and chemical changes of P2-NNMO during high-voltage cycling using a variety of characterization techniques. It was found that the lattice distortion and crystal-plane buckling induced by the P2-O2 phase transition slowed down the Na-ion transport in the bulk and hindered the extraction of the Na ions. The sluggish kinetics was the main reason in reducing the accessible capacity while other interfacial degradation mechanisms played minor roles. Our results not only enabled a more complete understanding of the capacity-fading mechanism of P2-NNMO but also revealed the underlying correlations between lattice doping and the moderately improved cycle performance.

Highly crystalline sodium manganese ferrocyanide microcubes for advanced sodium ion battery cathodes

The microstructure and morphology of the crystal play an important role in the physical and electrochemical properties of electrode materials. Here we report a highly crystalline microcube structure of Na-rich Prussian white Na 1.92 Mn[Fe(CN) 6 ] 0.98 for sodium ion battery cathodes. The obtained structure features high crystallinity of the monoclinic structure with an average cubic size of 3–5 μm. Because of the improvement on microstructural and electrical properties, the cathode design enables promising electrochemical performance. The electrode exhibits an outstanding rate performance with reversible capacities of 152.8 mA h g –1 (10 mA g –1 ), 128.1 mA h g –1 (100 mA g –1 ), 118.7 mA h g –1 (500 mA g –1 ) and 110.3 mA h g –1 (1000 mA g –1 ). It also exhibits a good cycling performance with a capacity retention of 82% after 500 cycles at 100 mA g –1 . More importantly, the XRD analysis reveals a highly reversible monoclinic–cubic–monoclinic structural evolution of the cathode upon Na + extraction/insertion. The good rate and cycling performance can be attributed to the robust crystal structure with few defects and fast Na + transfer kinetics. The high purity single crystal morphology can also reduce the side reactions on the electrode/electrolyte interface.

Enhanced Electrochemical Performance of Sodium Manganese Ferrocyanide by Na 3 (VOPO 4 ) 2 F Coating for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Sodium manganese ferrocyanide Na x Mn[Fe(CN) 6 ] y is an attractive cathode material for sodium-ion batteries. However, NaxMn[Fe(CN) 6 ] y prepared by simple coprecipitation of Mn 2+ and [Fe(CN) 6 ] 4– usually shows poor cycling performance, which hinders its practical application. In this work, electrochemical performance of a Na 1.6 Mn[Fe(CN) 6 ] 0.9 (PBM) sample prepared by the simple precipitation method was greatly improved by coating with Na 3 (VOPO 4 ) 2 F (NVOPF) via a solution precipitation method. The as-prepared PBM@NVOPF with a coating quantity of 2.0% molar ratio showed enhanced rate capability and superior cyclic stability. The discharge capacities of PBM@NVOPF were 101.5 mA h g –1 (1 C) and 91.4 mA h g –1 (10 C), with a capacity retention of 84.3% after 500 cycles at 1 C, 20 °C. It also exhibited excellent cyclic stability at elevated temperature with an initial capacity of 109.5 mA h g –1 and a capacity retention of 78.8% after 200 cycles at 1 C, 55 °C. In comparison, uncoated PBM showed a discharge capacity of 105.7 mA h g–1 (1 C) and 76.7 mA h g –1 (10 C), with a capacity retention of only 42.0% after 500 cycles at 1 C, 20 °C. The high-temperature performance of bare PBM was very poor, and the capacity retention was only 35.7% after 40 cycles because of serious Mn/Fe dissolution which caused structural deterioration of PBM. NVOPF coating protected the PBM from suffering corrosion in the electrolyte, thus ensured the framework stability of PBM during long-term cycling and contributed to the excellent electrochemical performance.

Electrochemical Performance of NaFeFe(CN) 6 Prepared by Solid Reaction for Sodium Ion Batteries

Commercially available Na 4 Fe(CN) 6 and Fe 4 [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3 are two cheap compounds that have ever been investigated as positive electrode materials for sodium-ion batteries. However, poor electronic conductivity of Na 4 Fe(CN) 6 and sodium deficiency of Fe 4 [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3 prevent these two materials from being used in practical rechargeable sodium-ion batteries. In this paper, a NaFeFe(CN) 6 cathode material was synthesized by ball milling the Fe 4 [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3 / Na 4 Fe(CN) 6 mixture. The obtained NaFeFe(CN) 6 demonstrated a single cubic phase indexed to Fm3m space group similar to Fe 4 [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3 but with larger lattice parameter due to the existence of Na + in the lattice framework. The NaFeFe(CN) 6 electrode delivered first desodiation capacity of 119.4 mAh g -1 and first sodiation capacity of 153.6 mAh g -1 at 0.05C rate. The NaFeFe(CN) 6 showed excellent cycling stability with reversible capacities of 118.2 mAh g -1 and 96.8 mAh g -1 at 0.1C and 1C rate, respectively. In-situ XRD analyses demonstrated a single cubic phase process during charge-discharge of NaFeFe(CN) 6 electrode. Low water content benefited from the solid reaction method and the homogenous single phase process during charge/discharge assured the stable long term cycling performance of the NaFeFe(CN) 6 product.

Insight into Ca-Substitution Effects on O3-Type NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 Cathode Materials for Sodium-Ion Batteries Application

O3-type NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 (NaNFM) is well investigated as a promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), but the cycling stability of NaNFM still needs to be improved by using novel electrolytes or optimizing their structure with the substitution of different elements sites. To enlarge the alkali-layer distance inside the layer structure of NaNFM may benefit Na + diffusion. Herein, the effect of Ca-substitution is reported in Na sites on the structural and electrochemical properties of Na 1-x Ca x/2 NFM (x=0, 0.05, 0.1). X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of the prepared Na 1-x Ca x/2 NFM samples show single alpha-NaFeO 2 type phase with slightly increased alkali-layer distance as Ca content increases. The cycling stabilities of Ca-substituted samples are remarkably improved. The Na 0.9 Ca 0.05 Ni 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 (Na 0.9 Ca 0.05 NFM) cathode delivers a capacity of 116.3 mAh g -1 with capacity retention of 92% after 200 cycles at 1C rate. In operando XRD indicates a reversible structural evolution through an O3-P3-P3-O3 sequence of Na 0.9 Ca 0.05 NFM cathode during cycling. Compared to NaNMF, the Na 0.9 Ca 0.05 NFM cathode shows a wider voltage range in pure P3 phase state during the charge/discharge process and exhibits better structure recoverability after cycling. The superior cycling stability of Na 0.9 Ca 0.05 NFM makes it a promising material for practical applications in sodium-ion batteries.
