Na 4 Fe 1.5 Mn 1.5 (PO 4 ) 2 (P 2 O 7 ): A low-cost and earth-abundant cathode for robust sodium storage

The mixed compounds of phosphates and pyrophosphates are attractive cathodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to their robust open framework structure and superior diffusion dynamics. However, most reported mixed phosphate cathodes generally suffer from low operating potential. Herein, we develop a bimetallic Na 4 Fe 1.5 Mn 1.5 (PO 4 ) 2 (P 2 O 7 )/C-rGO (NFMPP/C-rGO) cathode, which possesses two working plateaus at 2.92 and 3.95 V. The obtained NFMPP/C-rGO demonstrates a stable high capacity of over 120 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C. In-situ XRD characterization discloses a solid solution reaction for the Fe 2+/3+ redox couple and a two-phase reaction for the Mn 2+/3+ redox couple. In conclusion, first-principles calculations reveal the migration of Na + in NFMPP has low barriers. This work provides a new, low-cost, earth-abundant, and stable cathode choice for practical SIBs.

Revolutionizing Lithium Storage Capabilities in TiO 2 by Expanding the Redox Range

TiO 2 is a widely recognized intercalation anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), yet its practical capacity is kinetically constrained due to sluggish lithium-ion diffusion, leading to a lithiation number of less than 1.0 Li + (336 mAh g -1 ). Here, the growth of TiO 2 crystallites is restrained by integrating Si into the TiO 2 framework, thereby enhancing the charge transfer and creating additional active sites potentially residing at grain boundaries for Li + storage. This strategy is corroborated by the expanded redox range of Ti, as thoroughly demonstrated via synchrotron radiation-based X-ray spectroscopy and Cs-corrected electron microscopy. Consequently, when deployed for lithium storage, the tailored material achieves an extraordinarily high reversible capacity of 559 mAh g -1 , 116% of the theoretical maximum of 483 mAh g -1 calculated based on all active species, while simultaneously retaining superior rate capability and robust cycling stability. Further, this work offers fresh perspectives on the revitalization of traditional electrode materials to achieve enhanced capacities.

Fluoride-Rich, Organic–Inorganic Gradient Interphase Enabled by Sacrificial Solvation Shells for Reversible Zinc Metal Batteries

Zinc metal batteries are strongly hindered by water corrosion, as solvated zinc ions would bring the active water molecules to the electrode/electrolyte interface constantly. Herein, we report a sacrificial solvation shell to repel active water molecules from the electrode/electrolyte interface and assist in forming a fluoride-rich, organic-inorganic gradient solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer. Additionally, the simultaneous sacrificial process of methanol and Zn(CF 3 SO 3 ) 2 results in the gradient SEI layer with an organic-rich surface (CH 2 OC- and C 5 product) and an inorganic-rich (ZnF 2 ) bottom, which combines the merits of fast ion diffusion and high flexibility. As a result, the methanol additive enables corrosion-free zinc stripping/plating on copper foils for 300 cycles with an average coulombic efficiency of 99.5%, a record high cumulative plating capacity of 10 A h/cm 2 at 40 mA/cm 2 in Zn/Zn symmetrical batteries. More importantly, at an ultralow N/P ratio of 2, the practical VO 2 //20 mu m thick Zn plate full batteries with a high areal capacity of 4.7 mAh/cm 2 stably operate for over 250 cycles, establishing their promising application for grid-scale energy storage devices. Furthermore, directly utilizing the 20 μm thick Zn for the commercial-level areal capacity (4.7 mAh/cm 2 ) full zinc battery in our work would simplify the manufacturing process and boost the development of the commercial zinc battery for stationary storage.

Tailoring activity of iron phthalocyanine by edge-nitrogen sites induced electronic delocalization

Fe-N-C catalysts have been recognized as the most satisfactory candidates alternatively to Pt-based catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, fine-tailoring of their intrinsic ORR catalytic activity still remains a great challenge due to the inferior accessibility and intrinsic activity of FeN x moieties. Herein, one order of magnitude activity enhancement of pristine Fe-N-C through cooperating with nitrogen-doped carbon micro-flower is achieved. The axial coordination effect between Fe active center and nitrogen atoms in support can break the electronic distribution symmetry of FeN x moieties and induce the electron delocalization on Fe active center and the electron localization on N, respectively, which favor the adsorption behavior of *OH intermediate. As a result, the catalyst exhibits a remarkable half-wave potential of 0.9 V and a high kinetic current density of 74.04 mA cm -2 at 0.85 V. In addition, when utilized as a cathode catalyst of liquid Zn-air batteries (ZABs), it possesses excellent electrochemical performance, for example, a high open circuit voltage (OCV) and peak power density of 1.59 V and 170.09 mW cm -2 , respectively. In conclusion, this work provides a new understanding into the activity enhancement mechanism of Fe-N-C catalysts, and inspires electronic delocalization of active sites for adjusting catalytic activity.

Proton Storage in Metallic H 1.75 MoO 3 Nanobelts through the Grotthuss Mechanism

The proton, as the cationic form of the lightest element-H, is regarded as most ideal charge carrier in "rocking chair " batteries. However, current research on proton batteries is still at its infancy, and they usually deliver low capacity and suffer from severe acidic corrosion. In this work, electrochemically activated metallic H 1.75 MoO 3 nanobelts are developed as a stable electrode for proton storage. The electrochemically pre-intercalated protons not only bond directly with the terminal O 3 site via strong O-H bonds but also interact with the oxygens within the adjacent layers through hydrogen bonding, forming a hydrogen-bonding network in H 1.75 MoO 3 nanobelts and enabling a diffusion-free Grotthuss mechanism as a result of its ultralow activation energy of ~0.02 eV. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported inorganic electrode exhibiting Grotthuss mechanism-based proton storage. Additionally, the proton intercalation into MoO 3 with formation of H 1.75 MoO 3 induces strong Jahn-Teller electron-phonon coupling, rendering a metallic state. As a consequence, the H 1.75 MoO 3 shows an outstanding fast charging performance and maintains a capacity of 111 mAh/g at 2500 C, largely outperforming the state-of-art battery electrodes. More importantly, a symmetric proton ion full cell based on H 1.75 MoO 3 was assembled and delivered an energy density of 14.7 Wh/kg at an ultrahigh power density of 12.7 kW/kg, which outperforms those of fast charging supercapacitors and lead-acid batteries.

Bioinspired mechanically interlocking holey graphene@SiO 2 anode

Mechanically interlocking structures that can enhance adhesion at the interface and regulate the stress distribution have been widely observed in biological systems. Inspired by the biological structures in the wings of beetles, we synthesized a holey graphene@SiO 2 anode with strong mechanical interlocking, characterized it electrochemically, and explained its performance by finite element analysis and density functional calculations. The mechanically interlocking structure enhances lithium-ion (Li + ) storage by transmitting the strain from SiO 2 to the holey graphene and by a mechano-electrochemical coupling effect. The interlocking fit hinders the abscission of SiO 2 and the distinctive structure reduces the stress and strain of SiO 2 during (de)lithiation. The positive mechano-electrochemical coupling effect preserves the amount of electrochemically active phase (Li x Si) during cycles and facilitates Li + diffusion. Therefore, the capacity shows only a slight attenuation after 8000 cycles (cycling stability), and the specific capacity is ~1200 mA h g –1 at 5 A/g (rate-performance). This study furnishes a novel way to design high-performance Li + /Na + /K + /Al 3+ anodes with large volume expansion.

Uniform lithiophilic layers in 3D current collectors enable ultrastable solid electrolyte interphase for high-performance lithium metal batteries

Uniform lithium plating/stripping during charging/discharging in 3D lithiophilic current collectors (3DLCC) is essential to suppress growth of lithium dendrites and to mitigate infinite volume variations of lithium metal for long-lived lithium metal batteries. Additionally, this study reveals the decisive role played by uniformity of the lithiophilic layer of the 3DLCC in achieving uniform lithium plating/stripping. Herein, a series of metal oxide-based 3DLCCs are successfully fabricated with a simple and an ultrafast solution combustion method, from which formation of a uniform and stable lithium dendrite-free solid electrolyte interphase via a uniform lithiophilic layer is demonstrated. Taking Co 3 O 4 as the lithiophilic material deposited on a nickel foam as the 3DLCC (Co@NF) for a proof of concept, the loading amount of Co 3 O 4 , closely correlated with the uniformity of the Co 3 O 4 layer, is modulated to optimize its lithium ion hosting performances. With a uniform Co 3 O 4 layer grown in the 3DLCC, an ultralow nucleation overpotential of 33.4 mV is achieved in half-cell tests at 1 mA cm -2 and 1 mAh cm -2 , and a high Coulombic efficiency of 97.1% is maintained after 210 cycles under a severe cycling condition of 2 mA cm -2 and 1 mAh cm -2 . A small polarization voltage of 13 mV together with an ultralong cycle life of 2400 h at 0.5 mA cm -2 and 1 mAh cm -2 in symmetric Li cells is achieved. Moreover, the composite Li anode delivers sensational rate capability and cyclability in full-cells. This work not only provides new and valuable insights into the interphasial chemistry of solid electrolyte interphase layers, but also sheds light on the development of ultrastable lithium metal batteries.
