Effects of Tangential Edge Constraints on the Postbuckling Behavior of Flat and Curved Panels Subjected to Thermal and Mechanical Loads

A parametric study of the effects of tangential edge constraints on the postbuckling response of flat and shallow curved panels subjected to thermal and mechanical loads is presented. The mechanical loads investigated are uniform compressive edge loads and transverse lateral pressure. The temperature fields considered are associated with spatially nonuniform heating over the panels, and a linear through-the-thickness temperature gradient. The structural model is based on a higher-order transverse-shear-deformation theory of shallow shells that incorporates the effects of geometric nonlinearities, initial geometric imperfections, and tangential edge motion constraints. Results are presented for three-layer sandwich panels made from transversely isotropic materials. Simply supported panels are considered in which the tangential motion of the unloaded edges is either unrestrained, partially restrained, or fully restrained. These results focus on the effects of the tangential edge restraint on the postbuckling response. The results of this study indicate that tangentially restraining the edges of a curved panel can make the panel insensitive to initial geometric imperfections in some cases.

Post-buckling of geometrically imperfect shear-deformable flat panels under combined thermal and compressive edge loadings

The static post-buckling of simply-supported flat panels exposed to a stationary nonuniform temperature field and subjected to a system of subcritical in-plane compressive edge loads is investigated. The study is performed within a refined theory of composite laminated plates incorporating the effect of transverse shear and the geometric nonlinearities. The influence played by a number of effects, among them transverse shear deformation, initial geometric imperfections, the character of the in-plane boundary conditions and thickness ratio are studied and a series of conclusions are outlined. The influence played by the complete temperature field (i.e., the uniform through thickness and thickness-wise gradient) as compared to the one induced by only the uniform one, is discussed and the peculiarities of the resulting post-buckling behaviors are enlightened.

Postbuckling of laminated flat and curved panels under combined thermal and mechanical loadings

The static postbuckling of simply-supported, symmetrically laminated composite and single-layered flat and doubly-curved shallow panels, subjected to both a stationary non-uniform temperature field and a system of mechanical loadings is investigated. A number of non-classical effects related to the transverse shear flexibility of constituent materials, the unavoidable initial geometric imperfections and the character of tangential boundary conditions are considered and pertinent conclusions about their role on the postbuckling response are emphasized. Throughout the paper the results based upon a higher-order theory are compared with their first order shear deformable and classical counterparts, and conclusions related to their range of applicability are outlined.

Vibration of compressively loaded shear deformable flat panels exhibiting initial geometric imperfections

Numerical study results are presented which indicate that, in the prebuckling range, the natural frequency predicted by the shear-deformable plate theory is smaller than that associated with its transverse-shear rigid counterpart. The opposite behavior occurs in the postbuckling/postcritical range. With increasing transverse shear flexibility, greater differences between frequencies predicted by shear deformation and infinitely rigid transverse shear theories emerge. The character of in-plane boundary conditions is a determinant of both increasing/decreasing buckling loads and increasing/decreasing vibratory frequencies.

Vibrational behavior of adaptive aircraft wing structures modelled as composite thin-walled beams

The vibrational behavior of cantilevered aircraft wings modeled as thin-walled beams and incorporating piezoelectric effects is studied. Based on the converse piezoelectric effect, the system of piezoelectric actuators conveniently located on the wing yield the control of its associated vertical and lateral bending eigenfrequencies. The possibility revealed by this study enabling one to increase adaptively the eigenfrequencies of thin-walled cantilevered beams could play a significant role in the control of the dynamic response and flutter of wing and rotor blade structures.

Formulation of an elastodynamic theory of laminated shear-deformable flat panels

A higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT) is developed, designed to preserve all the characteristics of the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) with regard to the number of the unknowns and to the order of the associated governing equations. In contrast to the FSDT theory, the HSDT theory is characterized by a parabolic distribution of transverse shear stress and strain components throughout the laminate thickness thus eliminating the need of a shear correction factor, and by the elimination of the contradictory assumption of the FSDT concerning the simultaneous consideration of zero transverse normal stress and zero transverse normal strain. The governing equations of the HSDT are presented, and several special applications are discussed.

Response of laminated composite flat panels to sonic boom and explosive blast loadings

This paper deals with a theoretical analysis of the dynamic response of shear deformable symmetrically laminated rectangular composite flat panels exposed to sonic boom and explosive blast loadings. The pertinent governing equations incorporating transverse shear deformation, transverse normal stress, as well as the higher-order effects are solved by using the integral-transform technique. The obtained results are compared with their counterparts obtained within the framework of the first-order transverse shear deformation and the classical plate theories and some conclusions concerning their range of applicability are outlined. The paper also contains a detailed analysis of the influence played by the various parameters characterizing the considered pressure pulses as well as the material and geometry of the plate.

Postbuckling analysis of shear deformable composite flat panels taking into account geometrical imperfections

The effects of initial geometrical imperfections on the postbuckling response of flat laminated composite panels to uniaxial and biaxial compressive loading are investigated analytically. The derivation of the mathematical model on the basis of first-order transverse shear deformation theory is outlined, and numerical results for perfect and imperfect, single-layer and three-layer square plates with free-free, clamped-clamped, or free-clamped edges are presented in graphs and briefly characterized. The present approach is shown to be more accurate than analyses based on the classical Kirchhoff plate model.

Dynamic response of anisotropic composite panels to time-dependent external excitations

This paper deals with the dynamic response of anisotropic laminated composite flat panels exposed to sonic boom and explosive blast-type loadings. The pertinent governing equations incorporating transverse shear deformation, transverse normal stress, the higher order effects as well as the viscous structural damping are solved by using the integral-transform technique. The obtained results are compared with their counterparts obtained within the framework of the first order transverse shear deformation and the classical plate theories and some conclusions concerning their range of applicability are outlined. The paper also contains a detailed analysis of the influence played by the various parameters characterizing the considered pressure pulses as well as the material and geometry of the plate.

Instability of fiber-reinforced viscoelastic composite plates to in-plane compressive loads

This study analyzes the stability behavior of unidirectional fiber-reinforced composite plates with viscoelastic material behavior subject to in-plane biaxial compressive edge loads. To predict the effective time-dependent material properties, elastic fibers embedded in a linearly viscoelastic matrix are examined. The micromechanical relations developed for a transversely isotropic medium are discussed along with the correspondence principle of linear viscoelasticity. It is concluded that the stability boundary obtained for a viscoelastic plate is lower (more critical) than its elastic counterpart, and the transverse shear deformation effects are more pronounced in viscoelastic plates than in their elastic counterparts.

The effects of time-dependent excitation on the oscillatory motion of viscously damped laminated composite flat panels

Analytical estimates are used to describe the effects of transverse shear deformation, transverse normal stress, damping, and heterogeneity on the dynamic responses of laminated composite structures. The higher-order plate model is delineated with attention given to applications for viscously damped cross-ply symmetrically laminated plates subject to different time-history excitations. These effects are considered in the context of sonic-boom and blast loadings, and comparisons are made between the results of higher-order plate theory, first-order transverse-shear deformation, and classical theory. The results of the present higher-order model are found to be immune to the changes incurred by adding transverse viscous into the analysis. The responses of pulse-loadings due to symmetrical sonic boom and a triangular blast are found to be similar for certain times and pressure fields. It is shown that only the higher-order plate theory permits the accurate evaluation of frequency spectrum and time-history structural response of composite laminates.

Dynamic stability of unidirectional fiber-reinforced viscoelastic composite plates

This paper deals with a dynamic stability analysis of unidirectional fiber-reinforced composite viscoelastic plates subjected to compressive edge loads. The integrodifferential equations governing the stability problem are obtained by using, in conjunction with a Boltzmann hereditary constitutive law for a three-dimensional viscoelastic medium, a higher-order shear deformation theory of orthotropic plates. Such a theory incorporates transverse shear deformation, transverse normal stress, and rotatory inertia effects. The solution of the stability problem as considered within this paper concerns the determination of the critical in-plane edge loads yielding the asymptotic instability. Numerical applications, based on material properties derived within the framework of Aboudi's micromechanical model, are presented and pertinent conclusions concerning the nature of the loss of stability and the influence of various parameters are outlined.

Remarks on a dynamical higher-order theory of laminated plates and its application in random vibration response

This paper presents an analysis of the equations governing the dynamics of shear-deformable composite plates, without recourse to a variational procedure. It is noted that the operator associated with the governing equations is nonsymmetric; using a first-order perturbation technique, it is shown to be positive-definite. In addition, using the biorthogonality condition, the dynamic response of the plate is formulated.

Random vibrations of laminated plates modeled within the first order shear deformation theory

This paper deals with the dynamic response of anisotropic laminated composite plates to stationary random excitation. The theory of laminated plates used here includes shear deformation and rotary inertia effects in the same manner as Mindlin's theory for isotropic homogeneous plates. Two cases of random pressure fields are considered in this analysis. In the first case, it is modeled as a uniformly distributed load, random in time with an exponential decaying correlation function, while in the second one as a jet noise, fully correlated in one direction and homogeneous in the perpendicular one. The analysis presented herein, as well as the obtained response characteristics, expressed in terms of mean-squares and angle-dependent mean-squares, may be useful in the design of composite plates subjected to random pressure fields and in the evaluation of their reliability.

A few remarks concerning several refined theories of anisotropic composite laminated plates

An analysis and comparison of several shear deformable bending theories of composite laminated anisotropic plates currently encountered in the field literature are given in this paper. Although apparently different, it is shown in a unitary way, that these theories constitute in fact only different formulations of a single theory, generically designated to as the moderately thick plate theory. Their connection with the first order transverse shear deformation theory is also emphasized and some conclusions concerning its shortcomings and field applicability are presented.

Reliability of laminated plates

The reliability of laminated plates subjected to in-plane random static loads is derived. The Hashin failure criterion for unidirectional fiber composites is used to establish the performance function. The Hasofer-Lind method is then applied and the reliabilities associated with the various failure modes are obtained.

A shear deformable theory of laminated composite shallow shell-type panels and their response analysis. II - Static response

In the second part of this paper, by using the static counterparts of the governing equations derived in Librescu (1989), the static response of shallow composite shell-type panels subjected to a sinusoidal transverse load is investigated. The numerical applications, encompassing a large number of boundary conditions and various lamination schemes, allow one to obtain some conclusions which are formulated in the paper.
