Eigenvalues and eigenvectors for hybrid coordinate equations of motion for flexible spacecraft

The eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a system of linear time-invariant equations describing the attitude motion of flexible spacecraft in terms of hybrid coordinates are characterized in terms of literal expressions by using peculiar properties of the system parameter matrices. For the undamped case the eigenvalues are localized in terms of inertial matrices and modal parameters. A procedure for calculating the eigenvectors is proposed whereby the eigenproblem associated with the original system of dimension (2N + 6) is reduced to that of a symmetric and positive definite matrix of dimension N with the zero-damping assumption. The eigenvectors for systems of large dimension are obtained explicitly in terms of a 3x1 matrix whose elements are available from a system of three algebraic equations, which is provided.

Optimal estimation and attitude control of a solar electric propulsion spacecraft

Established procedures of linear, quadratic, Gaussian optimal estimation and control are developed and interpreted for their application to the problem of attitude control of spacecraft with dynamically significant elastic appendages. Results are presented both in general terms and for specific application to a solar electric spacecraft. Comparisons are made between alternative coordinate systems, and a realistic range of design parameters is considered. For single axis control, system evaluation is accomplished by simulation of a fifteenth-order spacecraft plant with alternative second-order, fourth-order, and sixth-order constant gain estimators. Results point out the importance of modeling errors.

Appendage modal coordinate truncation criteria in hybrid coordinate dynamic analysis

The paper examines the validity of the assumption that certain appendage-distributed (modal) coordinates can be truncated from a system model without unacceptable degradation of fidelity in hybrid coordinate dynamic analysis for attitude control of spacecraft with flexible appendages. Alternative truncation criteria are proposed and their interrelationships defined. Particular attention is given to truncation criteria based on eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and controllability and observability. No definitive resolution of the problem is advanced, and exhaustive study is required to obtain ultimate truncation criteria.

Frequency domain approach for evaluation of stochastic control of elastic spacecraft

An attempt is made to develop a reduced-order filter for an elastic spacecraft. The frequency-domain approach is resorted to both for arriving at an appropriate ROF and for evaluating the resulting stochastic flight controller. The frequency-domain approach employed is contrasted to the time-domain approach previously utilized by the authors. A linearized deterministic dynamical model of a solar electric propulsion spacecraft is analyzed. Flexibility modes were incorporated profitably into the ROF model, and the stochastic controllers exhibit notching of structural resonances reminiscent of classical notch filters. Accurate estimates of modal parameters (damping, natural frequency) are deemed crucial, and use of worst-case values in the ROF design is recommended.

Coordinate transformation and truncation for rotating spacecraft with flexible appendages

The analytical structures of alternative coordinate transformations for the variables that characterize the deformations of finite element models of flexible appendages on rotating spacecraft are examined. Particular emphasis is given to the truncation operations that are essential for efficient numerical simulations of flexible spacecraft, due to the necessarily large number of coordinates employed in a finite element description. A theorem is developed which establishes necessary conditions for the commutativity of the required truncation and inversion operations. The recommended alternative for the rotating elastic appendage is a complex transformation with previously published orthogonality properties, which permit the derivation in this paper of a relatively simple explicit set of transformed and truncated equations of modal vibration in real variables.

The influence of spacecraft flexibility on system controllability and observability

Literal criteria are developed for the controllability and observability of general models of flexible spacecraft. Results are interpreted in special cases and in physical terms, permitting in some cases the identification of uncontrollable and unobservable states simply by examination of scalars composed of modal parameters and location matrices for sensors and actuators. A procedure is established for isolation of uncontrollable states, whereby sensor and actuator configuration assure that uncontrollable flexible mode states are also unobservable; in many applications such states can then be removed by coordinate truncation.

Fuel-optimal angular momentum vector control for spinning and dual-spin spacecraft.

The problem of fuel-optimal small-angle reorientation of the spin axis of a spinning or dual-spin spacecraft is examined. The results obtained show significant improvements over previously published optimization studies by virtue of the introduction of two innovations: (1) mass-explusion active control is utilized for angular momentum vector pointing only, with passive damping relied upon for stable vehicles to attenuate vehicle coning about the angular momentum vector, so that the task of the active controller changes from spin axis control to angular momentum vector control, and (2) several options are considered for type, number, and location of attitude control jets. The first of these considerations introduces a target set which is a smooth, two-dimensional linear manifold in the four-dimensional state space, whereas previous studies have adopted the origin as the target set. The second innovation amounts to consideration of a spectrum of control restraint sets.

Liapunov stability analysis of spinning flexible spacecraft.

The attitude stability of a class of spinning flexible spacecraft in a force-free environment is analyzed. The spacecraft is modeled as a rigid core having attached to it a flexible appendage idealized as a collection of elastically interconnected particles. Liapunov stability theorems are employed with the Hamiltonian of the system, constrained through the angular momentum integral so as to admit complete damping, used as a testing function. The Hamiltonian is written in terms of modal coordinates as interpreted by the hybrid coordinate formulation, thus allowing truncation to a level amenable to literal stability analysis. Testing functions are constructed for a spacecraft with an arbitrary (discretized) appendage, and closed form stability criteria are generated for the first mode of a restricted appendage model lying in a plane which contains the center of mass and is orthogonal to the spin axis. The criteria are (except for idealized cases on the stability boundary line in the parameter space) both necessary and sufficient for stability for any spacecraft characterized by the planar appendage model, such as a spacecraft containing solar panels and/or radial booms.
