High Depth‐of‐Discharge Zinc Rechargeability Enabled by a Self‐Assembled Polymeric Coating

Abstract Zinc has the potential for widespread use as an environmentally friendly and cost‐effective anode material pending the resolution of rechargeability issues caused by active material loss and shape change. Here, a self‐assembled Nafion‐coated Celgard 3501 (NC‐Celgard) separator is shown to enable unprecedented cycle life of a Zn anode in alkaline electrolyte at high depth‐of‐discharge (DOD Zn ). Using commercially relevant energy‐dense electrodes with high areal capacities of 60 mAh cm –2 , Zn–Ni cells tested at 20% DOD Zn cells achieve over 200 cycles while 50% DOD Zn cells achieve over 100 cycles before failure. The 20% and 50% DOD cells deliver an average of 132 and 180 Wh L –1 per cycle over their lifetime respectively. Rechargeability is attributed to the highly selective diffusion properties of the 300 nm thick negatively charged Nafion coating on the separator which prevents shorting by dendrites and inhibits redistribution of the active material. Crossover experiments show that the NC‐Celgard separator is practically impermeable to zincate ([Zn(OH) 4 ] 2– ), outperforming commercial Celgard, cellophane, Nafion 211 and 212 separators while still allowing hydroxide transport. This work demonstrates the efficacy of selective separators for increasing the cycle life of energy‐dense Zn electrodes without adding significant volume or complexity to the system.

Hydrothermal Synthesis and Solid-State Laser Refrigeration of Ytterbium-Doped Potassium-Lutetium-Fluoride (KLF) Microcrystals

Hydrothermal methods are used for the first time to synthesize distinct crystallographic stoichiometries within the potassium-lutetium-fluoride phase diagram for applications in solid-state laser refrigeration. Four crystalline phases were synthesized hydrothermally and doped with 10% Yb(III) ions, namely, orthorhombic K 2 LuF 5 (space group Pnma), trigonal KLuF 4 (space group P3 1 21), orthorhombic KLu 2 F 7 (space group Pna2 1 ), and cubic KLu 3 F 10 (space group $Fm\bar{3m}$), with each phase exhibiting unique microcrystalline morphologies. Among the four phases, the most significant cooling was observed for the KLuF 4 phase, which showed an overall refrigeration of 8.6 ± 2.1 K below room temperature. Laser refrigeration for KLuF4 was measured by observing both the eigenfrequencies of optomechanical cantilevers in vacuum and also the Brownian dynamics of optically trapped microcrystals in water. Cooling was also observed for the first time for the K 2 LuF 5 phase in vacuum based on measurements of the mean luminescence wavelength of Yb(III) ions. Finally, cooling was not observed with the other two phases.

Rechargeable alkaline zinc–manganese oxide batteries for grid storage: Mechanisms, challenges and developments

Rechargeable alkaline Zn–MnO 2 (RAM) batteries are a promising candidate for grid-scale energy storage owing to their high theoretical energy density rivaling lithium-ion systems (~400 Wh/L), relatively safe aqueous electrolyte, established supply chain, and projected costs below $100/kWh at scale. In practice, however, many fundamental chemical and physical processes at both electrodes make it difficult to achieve commercially competitive energy density and cycle life. In this paper, we present a detailed and timely analysis of the constituent materials, current commercial status, electrode processes, and performance-limiting factors of RAM batteries. We also examine recently reported strategies in RAM and related systems to address these issues through additives and modifications to the electrode materials and electrolyte, special ion-selective separators and/or coatings, and unconventional cycling protocols. We conclude with a critical summary of these developments and discussion of how future studies should be focused toward the goal of energy-dense, scalable, and cost-effective RAM systems.

Zincate-Blocking-Functionalized Polysulfone Separators for Secondary Zn–MnO 2 Batteries

Alkaline zinc–manganese dioxide (Zn–MnO 2 ) batteries are well suited for grid storage applications because of their inherently safe, aqueous electrolyte and established materials supply chain, resulting in low production costs. With recent advances in the development of Cu/Bi-stabilized birnessite cathodes capable of the full 2-electron capacity equivalent of MnO 2 (617 mA h/g), there is a need for selective separators that prevent zincate (Zn(OH) 4 ) 2– transport from the anode to the cathode during cycling, as this electrode system fails in the presence of dissolved zinc. In this work, we present the synthesis of N-butylimidazolium-functionalized polysulfone (NBI-PSU)-based separators and evaluate their ability to selectively transport hydroxide over zincate. We then examine their impact on the cycling of high depth of discharge Zn/(Cu/Bi–MnO 2 ) batteries when inserted in between the cathode and anode. Initially, we establish our membranes’ selectivity by performing zincate and hydroxide diffusion tests, showing a marked improvement in zincate-blocking (D Zn (cm 2 /min): 0.17 ± 0.04 × 10 –6 for 50-PSU, our most selective separator vs 2.0 ± 0.8 × 10 –6 for Cellophane 350P00 and 5.7 ± 0.8 × 10 –6 for Celgard 3501), while maintaining similar crossover rates for hydroxide (D OH (cm 2 /min): 9.4 ± 0.1 × 10 –6 for 50-PSU vs 17 ± 0.5 × 10 –6 for Cellophane 350P00 and 6.7 ± 0.6 × 10 –6 for Celgard 3501). We then implement our membranes into cells and observe an improvement in cycle life over control cells containing only the commercial separators (cell lifetime extended from 21 to 79 cycles).

Crystalline Loading of Lipophilic Coenzyme Q10 Pharmaceuticals within Conjugated Carbon Aerogel Derivatives

Low-density aerogel materials currently are being considered for applications in controlling the rate of release for small-molecule pharmaceuticals in vivo. In particular, silica (SiO2) aerogels are an intriguing platform for controlling both the absolute amount of drug loading, but also the crystalline state of small molecule pharmaceuticals has been shown to affect drug release kinetics. To date, loading silica aerogel materials with crystalline pharmaceuticals typically require dissolving small molecules in a supercritical solvent (i.e., CO2) before drying to recover the aerogel/drug composite. Here we demonstrate a simple and low-cost method for controlling the crystallinity of the model drug coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) within carbon aerogel materials by rationally controlling the chemical microstructure of the aerogel to exhibit ?-conjugated (sp2) chemical bonding. In particular, both pyrolyzed graphene and nanodiamond aerogels exhibit enhanced intrinsic drug loading capacity and CoQ10 crystallinity over a broad range of sp2 surface-curvature. In contrast, amorphous carbon aerogel materials are observed to load CoQ10 pharmaceuticals with strictly amorphous microstructure.

A Mechanistic Understanding of Nonclassical Crystal Growth in Hydrothermally Synthesized Sodium Yttrium Fluoride Nanowires

Sodium yttrium fluoride (NaYF 4 ) is an important upconverting material with many potential uses in chemistry, materials science, and biology, which can be synthesized hydrothermally in both cubic (α) and hexagonal (β) crystallographic polymorphs. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the phase conversion between the cubic and hexagonal polymorphs is of great interest to help inform future synthetic efforts, for example in the design of atomically precise quantum materials with well-defined sizes and morphologies. In this work, we use a combination of analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), in situ liquid cell TEM, atom probe tomography (APT), and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements to show that the hexagonal NaYF 4 nanowires form through a nonclassical crystal growth mechanism involving the formation and subsequent oriented attachment of mesocrystals consisting of cubic (α) phase units. Additionally, EXAFS measurements suggest that substitutional Yb 3+ point defects within NaYF 4 are distributed evenly throughout the crystal lattice without clustering and also that they may exhibit selective substitution into one of the two possible trivalent yttrium sites in the unit cell for hydrothermally synthesized β-NaYF 4 .
