Structural Design Methodology Based on Concepts of Uncertainty

In this report, an approach to damage-tolerant aircraft structural design is proposed based on the concept of an equivalent "Level of Safety" that incorporates past service experience in the design of new structures. The discrete "Level of Safety" for a single inspection event is defined as the compliment of the probability that a single flaw size larger than the critical flaw size for residual strength of the structure exists, and that the flaw will not be detected. The cumulative "Level of Safety" for the entire structure is the product of the discrete "Level of Safety" values for each flaw of each damage type present at each location in the structure. Based on the definition of "Level of Safety", a design procedure was identified and demonstrated on a composite sandwich panel for various damage types, with results showing the sensitivity of the structural sizing parameters to the relative safety of the design. The "Level of Safety" approach has broad potential application to damage-tolerant aircraft structural design with uncertainty.

Experimental investigations into composite fuselage impact damage resistance and post-impact compression behavior

Impact damage resistance and residual strength of laminated composite transport aircraft fuselage structure was studied experimentally. Techniques to quantify impact damage discretely and non-discretely are described. Experimental techniques to three-dimensionally map matrix damage and determine the sublaminate structure are illustrated. Impact damage was also quantified non-discretely, using characteristics of flexural wave propagation. Strain distributions in compressively loaded impact damaged laminates were experimentally measured.

Analytical and experimental studies on creep behavior of polymeric matrix composites

The creep behavior of graphite/epoxy composites is studied both analytically and experimentally. In the analytical study, a special finite element procedure was developed for the accurate and efficient analysis of creep response in anisotropic materials. This procedure was used to study the stress and strain distributions and histories in composite laminates containing circular holes. In the experimental study, creep tests were performed to investigate the time-dependent response of graphite/epoxy composites at elevated temperature. The moire interferometry technique was employed to determine the deformation histories in notched composites. The experimental results were compared with the analytical predictions and good agreement was observed.

Thermo-viscoelastic analysis of composite materials, volume 1

Advanced composite materials, especially graphite/epoxy, are being applied to aircraft structures in order to improve performance and save weight. An important consideration in composite design is the residual strength of a structure containing holes, delaminations, or interlaminar damage when subjected to compressive loads. Recent studies have revealed the importance of viscoelastic effects in polymer-based composites. The viscoelastic effect is particularly significant at elevated temperature/moisture conditions since the matrix material is strongly affected by the environment. The solution of viscoelastic problems in composites was limited to special cases which can be solved by classical lamination theory. A finite element procedure is presented for calculating time-dependent stresses and strains in composite structures with general configurations and complicated boundary conditions. Using this procedure the in-plane and interlaminar stress distributions and histories in notched and unnotched composites were obtained for mechanical and thermal loads. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional viscoelastic problems are analyzed. The effects of layup orientation and load spectrum on creep response and stress relaxation were also studied.
