Investigation of the alkaline hydrogen peroxide pretreatment: From cellulose saccharification to lignin isolation

Alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP) pretreatment, a green and effective technology for biomass fractionation, was studied to overcome the recalcitrance of bamboo for lignin isolation and facilitating enzymatic saccharification. In order to explore the impact of AHP pretreatment on the cellulose saccharification of bamboo, the glucan/xylan recovery, lignin removal, and structural properties of solid substrate were investigated in this research. AHP pretreatment at 90 °C for 60 min with 3.0 % H 2 O 2 resulted in the maximum glucan/xylan hydrolysis yield reaching 90.62 % and 88.30 %, respectively. Specially, for the first time, the recovered lignin from the AHP liquid possesses up to 59.84/100Ar of β-O-4 linkages, abundant ferulic acid (FA), and p-coumarate (pCE) structures, as well as a homogeneous molecular structure with high purity (84.04%-96.20%) and preferable antioxidant activities (IC50: 0.015–0.018 mg/mL). Finally, these results provided theoretical support for the comprehensive valorization of lignocellulose, which is favorable for achieving viable biorefineries.

Cellulose regulated lignin/cellulose-based carbon materials with hierarchical porous structure for energy storage

Lignin has gained extensive attention as an ideal carbon precursor due to its abundance and high carbon content. However, the agglomeration of lignin and additional corrosive and unrecyclable reagents in direct pyrolysis still limit the development of lignin-based porous carbons. Herein, a facile and eco-friendly strategy was proposed to fabricate hierarchical porous lignin/cellulose-based carbon materials (LCs). In the process, cellulose nanofibrils acted as the skeleton of the bio-aerogels, which supported lignin and benefit the preparation of the LCs. Moreover, the specific surface area and the graphitization degree of LCs can be regulated by varying the cellulose content. Without activation, the bio-based carbon material (LC30) had a high specific surface area of 1770 m 2 g –1 , which displayed high specific capacitance of 216.2 F g –1 at the current density of 0.5 A g –1 . The supercapacitor based on LC30 also showed outstanding energy density of 12.3 Wh kg –1 at the power density of 50 W kg –1 . The sustainable raw material, simple and harmless preparation process, and remarkable electrochemical performance enable LC30, a promising supercapacitor electrode for energy storage.

A hidden demethylation pathway removes mercury from rice plants and mitigates mercury flux to food chains

Dietary exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) causes irreversible damage to human cognition and is mitigated by photolysis and microbial demethylation of MeHg. Rice (Oryza sativa L.) has been identified as a major dietary source of MeHg. However, it remains unknown what drives the process within plants for MeHg to make its way from soils to rice and the subsequent human dietary exposure to Hg. Here we report a hidden pathway of MeHg demethylation independent of light and microorganisms in rice plants. This natural pathway is driven by reactive oxygen species generated in vivo, rapidly transforming MeHg to inorganic Hg and then eliminating Hg from plants as gaseous Hg°. MeHg concentrations in rice grains would increase by 2.4- to 4.7-fold without this pathway, which equates to intelligence quotient losses of 0.01–0.51 points per newborn in major rice-consuming countries, corresponding to annual economic losses of US$30.7–84.2 billion globally. Importantly, this discovered pathway effectively removes Hg from human food webs, playing an important role in exposure mitigation and global Hg cycling.

Probing the Potential Energy Profile of the I + (H 2 O) 3 → HI + (H 2 O) 2 OH Forward and Reverse Reactions: High Level CCSD(T) Studies with Spin-Orbit Coupling Included

Three different pathways for the atomic iodine plus water trimer reaction I + (H 2 O) 3 → HI + (H 2 O) 2 OH were preliminarily examined by the DFT-MPW1K method. Related to previous predictions for the F/Cl/Br + (H 2 O) 3 reactions, three pathways for the I + (H 2 O) 3 reaction are linked in terms of geometry and energetics. To legitimize the results, the “gold standard” CCSD(T) method was employed to investigate the lowest-lying pathway with the correlation-consistent polarized valence basis set up to cc-pVQZ(-PP). According to the CCSD(T)/cc-pVQZ(-PP)//CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ(-PP) results, the I + (H 2 O) 3 → HI + (H 2 O) 2 OH reaction is predicted to be endothermic by 47.0 kcal mol -1 . The submerged transition state is predicted to lie 43.7 kcal mol -1 above the separated reactants. The I···(H 2 O) 3 entrance complex lies below the separated reactants by 4.1 kcal mol -1 , and spin-orbit coupling has a significant impact on this dissociation energy. The HI···(H 2 O) 2 OH exit complex is bound by 4.3 kcal mol -1 in relation to the separated products. Compared with simpler I + (H 2 O) 2 and I + H 2 O reactions, the I + (H 2 O) 3 reaction is energetically between them in general. It is speculated that the reaction between the iodine atom and the larger water clusters may be energetically analogous to the I + (H 2 O) 3 reaction. The iodine reaction I + (H 2 O) 3 is connected with the analogous valence isoelectronic bromine/chlorine reactions Br/Cl + (H 2 O) 3 but much different from the F + (H 2 O) 3 reaction. Significant difference with other halogen systems, especially for barrier heights, are seen for the iodine systems.

The reaction between the bromine atom and the water trimer: high level theoretical studies

Three different reaction pathways are found for the reaction of bromine atom (Br) with the lowest-energy structure of the water trimer [uud-(H 2 O) 3 ], initially using the MPW1K-DFT method. The three bromine pathways have closely related geometries and energetics, analogous to those found for the fluorine and chlorine reactions. Here, the lowest-energy pathway of the Br + uud-(H 2 O) 3 reaction was further investigated using the “gold standard” CCSD(T) method and the correlation-consistent basis sets up to cc-pVQZ(-PP). Based on the CCSD(T)/cc-pVQZ(-PP)//CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ(-PP) results, the Br + (H 2 O) 3 reaction is endothermic by 33.3 kcal mol -1 . The classical barrier height is 29.0 kcal mol -1 between the reactants and the exit complex, and there is no barrier for the reverse reaction. The Br···(H 2 O) 3 entrance complex is found to lie 4.7 kcal mol -1 below the separated reactants, and the HBr···(H 2 O) 2 OH exit complex is bound by 6.4 kcal mol -1 relative to the separated products. This potential energy profile is further corrected by the zero point energies and spin–orbit coupling effects. Structurally, the Br + (H 2 O) 3 stationary points can be derived from those of the simpler Br + (H 2 O) 2 reaction by judiciously appending a H 2 O molecule. The Br + (H 2 O) 3 potential energy profile is compared with the Br + (H 2 O) 2 and Br + H 2 O reactions, as well as to the valence isoelectronic Cl + (H 2 O) 3 and F + (H 2 O) 3 systems. It is reasonable to expect that the reactions between the bromine atom and larger water clusters would be similar to the Br + (H 2 O) 3 reaction.

On the exceptional damage-tolerance of gradient metallic materials

An experimental study is described on the fracture toughness and micro-mechanisms associated with the initiation and propagation of cracks in metallic nickel containing marked gradients in grain size, ranging from ~30 nm to ~4 μm. Specifically, cracks are grown in a gradient structured (GS) nickel with grain-size gradient ranging from the coarse macro-scale to nano-scale (CG → NG) and vice versa (NG → CG), with the measured crack-resistance R-curves compared to the corresponding behavior in uniform nano-grained (NG) and coarse-grained (CG) materials. It is found that the gradient structures display a much-improved combination of high strength and toughness compared to uniform grain-sized materials. However, based on J-integral measurements in the gradient materials, the crack-initiation toughness is far higher for cracks grown in the direction of the coarse-to-nano grained gradient than vice versa, a result which we ascribe primarily to excessive crack-tip blunting in the coarse-grained microstructure. Both gradient structures, however, display marked rising R-curve behavior with exceptional crack-growth toughnesses exceeding 200 MPa.m ½ .

Nacre-inspired hemicelluloses paper with fire retardant and gas barrier properties by self-assembly with bentonite nanosheets

A need for fabricating robust hemicelluloses composites has been continuously gaining ground so as to replace petroleum-derived materials with renewable resources. Here, a new galactomannan with high molecular weight was extracted from endosperms of Sesbania cannabina which could improve the formation of arabinoxylan film. Inspired by the excellent mechanical properties and hierarchical structure of natural nacre, these naturally extracted arabinoxylan and galactomannan were further self-assembled with bentonite nanosheets, generating a ternary paper with multilayered structure. These hemicelluloses-bentonite papers exhibited the highest tensile strength of 80.87 MPa, 2.39 times that of the hemicelluloses paper without bentonite, which was achieved by the crosslinking reactions between hemicelluloses and bentonite nanosheets. Our study further reflected that these papers possess superior gas barrier, water-resistant and fire-retardant properties with the addition of small amount of bentonite nanosheet, which holds the potential for use as fire-protective insulations, coatings, packaging, and aerospace materials.

Modelling Environmental Impacts of Cesium-137 Under a Hypothetical Release of Radioactive Waste

Waste tanks at the nuclear facility located at Sellafield, UK, represent a nuclear source which could release radionuclides to the atmosphere. A model chain which combines atmospheric transport, deposition as well as riverine transport to sea has been developed to predict the riverine activity concentrations of {sup 137}Cs. The source term was estimated to be 9 × 10{sup 4} TBq of {sup 137}Cs, or 1% of the assumed total {sup 137}Cs inventory of the HAL (Highly Active Liquid) storage tanks. Air dispersion modelling predicted {sup 137}Cs deposition reaching 127 kBq m{sup −2} at the Vikedal catchment in Western Norway. Thus, the riverine transport model predicted that the activity concentration of {sup 137}Cs in water at the river outlet could reach 9000 Bq m{sup −3} in the aqueous phase and 1000 Bq kg{sup −1} in solid phase at peak level. The lake and river reaches showed different transport patterns due to the buffering effects caused by dilution and slowing down of water velocity.
