Abstract Fe, Mg, and O are among the most abundant elements in terrestrial planets. While the behavior of the Fe–O, Mg–O, and Fe–Mg binary systems under pressure have been investigated, there are still very few studies of the Fe–Mg–O ternary system at relevant Earth’s core and super-Earth’s mantle pressures. Here, we use the adaptive genetic algorithm (AGA) to study ternary Fe x Mg y O z phases in a wide range of stoichiometries at 200 GPa and 350 GPa. We discovered three dynamically stable phases with stoichiometries FeMg 2 O 4 , Fe 2 MgO 4, and FeMg 3 O 4 with lower enthalpy than any known combination of Fe–Mg–O high-pressure compounds at 350 GPa. With the discovery of these phases, we construct the Fe–Mg–O ternary convex hull. We further clarify the composition- and pressure-dependence of structural motifs with the analysis of the AGA-found stable and metastable structures. Analysis of binary and ternary stable phases suggest that O, Mg, or both could stabilize a BCC iron alloy at inner core pressures.

Due to the high cost and insufficient resources of lithium, alternative sodium-ion batteries have been widely investigated for large-scale applications. NaFePO 4 has the highest theoretical capacity of 154 mA h g -1 among the iron-based phosphates, which makes it an attractive cathode material for Na-ion batteries. Experimentally, LiFePO 4 has been highly successful as a cathode material in Li-ion batteries because its olivine crystal structure provides a stable framework during battery cycling. In NaFePO 4 , maricite replaces olivine as the most stable phase. However, the maricite phase is experimentally found to be electrochemically inactive under normal battery operating voltages (0–4.5 V). We found that partial substitutions of Na with Li stabilize the olivine structure and may be a way to improve the performance of NaFePO 4 cathodes. Using the previously developed structural LiFePO 4 database, here we examine the low-energy crystal structures in the system when we replace Li with Na. The known maricite and olivine NaFePO 4 phases are reconfirmed and an unreported phase with energy between them is identified by our calculations. Besides, the Li-doped olivine type compound Li x Na 1- x FePO 4 with mixed alkali ions retains better energetic stability compared with the other two types of structures of the same composition, as long as the proportion of Li exceeds 0.25. The thermodynamic stability of o-type Li x Na 1- x FePO 4 can be further improved at finite temperatures. The primary limitation of the calculations is that we mainly focus on the zero-temperature condition; however, the relative stability of the structures may vary depending on the ambient temperature.
The structural diversity of rare-earth and transition metal borides indicates that alkali-transition metal borides (A-T-B) show tremendous promise in exhibiting a variety of crystal structures with different dimensionalities of T-B frameworks. On the other hand, the A-T-B ternary systems are severely underexplored because of the synthetic challenges associated with their preparation. Accurate and efficient computational predictions of low-energy stable and metastable phases can identify the optimal compositions of the hypothetical compounds in the A-T-B systems to guide the synthesis. As such, in this work, we have computationally discovered several new phases in the Li–Ni–B ternary system. The newly discovered LiNiB, Li 2 Ni 3 B, and Li 2 NiB phases expand the existing theoretical database, and the convex-hull surface of Li–Ni–B has been re-constructed. The lowest energy structure of the LiNiB compound has been found by an adaptive genetic algorithm with layered motif, which matches with the experimentally determined structure. According to our electrochemical calculations, LiNiB and another predicted layered Li 2 NiB compounds have great potential as anode materials for lithium batteries. The Li 2 Ni 3 B compound with the space group P4 3 32 was predicted to crystallize in a cubic structure composed of distorted octahedral units of BNi 6 , which is isostructural to two noncentrosymmetric superconductors Li 2 Pd 3 B and Li 2 Pt 3 B. While we were unable to experimentally confirm the Li 2 Ni 3 B compound utilizing the hydride synthetic route, attempts to synthesize this compound by alternate methods remain highly desirable, considering its potential superconducting properties.
