Performance interface document for the S-band diplexer for space users of NASA networks

This report discusses the test results and interfacing information of the S-band diplexer development program supported by RTOP 310 funding. The program was implemented to reduce the S-band transponder noise figure by minimizing the receive channel insertion loss and to also provide Space Transportation System (STS) compatibility by providing 70-db rejection up to 16 GHz in the receive channel. This compatibility includes rejection of signals from the Shuttle S-band Data Link, the K-band Data Link, and the K-band Rendezvous Radar. The first of many projects to benefit from this accomplishment was the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS).

Discrete component microwave amplifiers.

Several 2-3 GHz amplifiers using discrete variable components have been designed and tested. A power output of 6.5 watts with 30-mw drive and 29% efficiency has been obtained from a three-stage amplifier operating at 2.25 GHz. The unit has a 3 db bandwidth of 100 MHz and is stable with respect to temperature changes, a vacuum environment, and mechanical vibration. Significant problems arising from the use of discrete components have not been encountered.

Discrete-component S-band power amplifier

Amplifier uses low Q input and output circuitry incorporating four variable air dielectric capacitors. Performance over conventional designs includes - increased power output, decreased likelihood of parametric oscillation, and increased thermal stability.
