The structure of W49 A as deduced from molecular and recombination line observations

The molecular cloud complex W49 A has been observed in the 2.6-mm CO line, the 2-cm H2CO line, and the H76-alpha recombination line. These observations are most consistent with a picture of the complex in which a large H II region lies between two massive molecular clouds. Using a simple hydrodynamic model coupled with calculations of radiative transfer in the recombination lines, it is found that many of the spectral-line and continuum observations obtained on this region can be naturally explained, including: (1) the multiple structure observed in the molecular lines and the single structure in the recombination lines; (2) the local standard of rest (LSR) velocities of both the molecular and recombination lines; (3) the velocity gradients observed in the lines; (4) the continuum emission from the H II region; and (5) the line widths and line-to-continuum ratios of the recombination lines.

CO and CS in the Orion Nebula

The reported observations were made with an 11-m radio telescope. The CO map considered has a peak near the position of the infrared continuum source. There is little correlation between the CO contours and any optical structure. The CO contours show a pronounced north-south orientation. CS was observed as a representative example of a stable molecule with a higher dipole moment than CO. Questions regarding the structure of Orion A are discussed, giving attention to various models.

C-13O-16/C-12O-18 ratios in nine H II regions.

Investigation of carbon monoxide spectra in sources where the C-12O-18 line is observed at an intensity typically about one-sixth that of the C-13O-16 line. This pair of lines affords the opportunity of studying the relative abundance of their constituents, especially the astrophysically important C-12/C-13 ratio. Data are presented on a total of nine sources which together constitute a reasonable sample of the regions with strong molecular spectra.

RKR Franck-Condon factors for blue and ultraviolet transitions of some molecules of astrophysical interest and some comments on the interstellar abundance of CH, CH+ and SiH+.

RKR Franck-Condon factors for thirteen of the blue and ultraviolet transitions of AlF, AlO, BH, BD, CH, CD, CH(+), SiO and SiH(+) have been calculated. The interstellar abundances of CH, CH(+) and SiH(+) are discussed with regard to recent laboratory measurements, our Franck-Condon factors, and observations of the sun and the interstellar medium.

Radiative lifetimes and absolute oscillator strengths for the SiO A/super 1/Pi to X/super 1/Sigma+ transition.

Measurement of a radiative lifetime of 9.6 (plus or minus 1.0) nsec for the SiO A(super 1)Pi state is reported. RKR Franck-Condon factors have been computed and, with these, absolute oscillator strengths are calculated. A band system at 3022 A has been found that may be due to SiO+, but the band is not resolved at our experimental resolution, and identification remains uncertain. The upper state of the carrier of this spectrum has a radiative lifetime of 8.3 (plus or minus 0.8) nsec.
