Reconfigurable spin current transmission and magnon–magnon coupling in hybrid ferrimagnetic insulators

Coherent spin waves possess immense potential in wave-based information computation, storage, and transmission with high fidelity and ultra-low energy consumption. However, despite their seminal importance for magnonic devices, there is a paucity of both structural prototypes and theoretical frameworks that regulate the spin current transmission and magnon hybridization mediated by coherent spin waves. Here, we demonstrate reconfigurable coherent spin current transmission, as well as magnon–magnon coupling, in a hybrid ferrimagnetic heterostructure comprising epitaxial Gd 3 Fe 5 O 12 and Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 insulators. By adjusting the compensated moment in Gd 3 Fe 5 O 12 , magnon–magnon coupling was achieved and engineered with pronounced anticrossings between two Kittel modes, accompanied by divergent dissipative coupling approaching the magnetic compensation temperature of Gd 3 Fe 5 O 12 (T M,GdIG ), which were modeled by coherent spin pumping. Remarkably, we further identified, both experimentally and theoretically, a drastic variation in the coherent spin wave-mediated spin current across T M,GdIG , which manifested as a strong dependence on the relative alignment of magnetic moments. Our findings provide significant fundamental insight into the reconfiguration of coherent spin waves and offer a new route towards constructing artificial magnonic architectures.

Sulfur-Enriched Nanoporous Carbon: A Novel Approach to CO 2 Adsorption

Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) intake plays a vital role in sustaining the environmental balance by influencing global carbon dynamics and climatic stability. This work addresses the production of sulfur-doped porous nanocarbons (SDCs) as prospective sorbents for CO 2 capture. SDCs were fabricated by utilizing coconut shell as a carbon precursor and potassium persulfate as both a chemical activating agent and a sulfur dopant. The incorporation of sulfur functionalities into carbon matrices creates structural variability and active sites, boosting CO 2 absorption capabilities. Sulfur's peculiar electrical structure allows greater intermolecular interactions with CO 2 , enhancing adsorption affinities. According to the experimental data, the CO 2 uptake was best measured as 3.37 mmol/g at 0(degrees)C and 1 bar and 2.56 mmol/g at 25 C-degrees and 1 bar. The results show that the higher porosity of SDC materials adds to a large amplification in the CO 2 uptake capability. The work underlines the delicate interaction between sulfur doping, morphological porosity, and surface reactivity in enhancing the effectiveness of CO 2 sequestration. SDC materials hold considerable promise in tackling the present ecological concerns and developing CO 2 collection techniques. The suggested single-step synthesis technique described here provides a sustainable and environmentally friendly method for synthesizing SDCs for carbon capture applications.

Controllable Skyrmionic Phase Transition between Néel Skyrmions and Bloch Skyrmionic Bubbles in van der Waals Ferromagnet Fe 3-δ GeTe 2

The van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnet Fe 3-δ GeTe 2 has garnered significant research interest as a platform for skyrmionic spin configurations, that is, skyrmions and skyrmionic bubbles. However, despite extensive efforts, the origin of the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (DMI) in Fe 3-δ GeTe 2 remains elusive, making it challenging to acquire these skyrmionic phases in a controlled manner. In this study, it is demonstrated that the Fe content in Fe 3-δ GeTe 2 has a profound effect on the crystal structure, DMI, and skyrmionic phase. For the first time, a marked increase in Fe atom displacement with decreasing Fe content is observed, transforming the original centrosymmetric crystal structure into a non-centrosymmetric symmetry, leading to a considerable DMI. Additionally, by varying the Fe content and sample thickness, a controllable transition between Néel-type skyrmions and Bloch-type skyrmionic bubbles is achieved, governed by a delicate interplay between dipole–dipole interaction and the DMI. The findings offer novel insights into the variable skyrmionic phases in Fe 3-δ GeTe 2 and provide the impetus for developing vdW ferromagnet-based spintronic devices.

Ordered porous RGO/SnO 2 thin films for ultrasensitive humidity detection

In this work, ordered porous thin films of reduced graphene oxide and tin oxide (rGO/SnO 2 ) were synthesized by a polystyrene sphere monolayer colloidal crystal template method, and their gas-sensing properties were systematically studied. The formed amorphous SnO 2 and partially reduced graphene oxide were analyzed using several complementary material characterization techniques. Further, the results show that the incorporation of rGO significantly improved the humidity sensitivity and the electrical conductivity of the sensor relative to the pristine SnO 2 thin film. Fast response time and excellent selectivity towards humidity were also achieved for the rGO/SnO 2 composite film. The long-term stability of the rGO/SnO 2 sensor was confirmed by comparing its performance to a commercial humidity sensor. The enhanced sensor performance is attributed to the synergistic effects of the incorporation of rGO and the ordered porous structure of the composite film.

Nonvolatile Magnetoelectric Switching of Magnetic Tunnel Junctions with Dipole Interaction

The magnetoelectric effect is technologically appealing because of its ability to manipulate magnetism using an electric field rather than magnetic field or current, thus providing a promising solution for the development of energy-efficient spintronics. Although 180° magnetization switching is vital to spintronic devices, the achievement of 180° magnetization switching via magnetoelectric coupling is still a fundamental challenge. Here, in this work, voltage-driven full resistance switching of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) with dipole interaction on a ferroelectric substrate through switchable parallel/antiparallel magnetization alignment is demonstrated. Parallel magnetization alignment along the y direction is obtained under a bias magnetic field. By rotating the magnetic easy axis via strain-mediated magnetoelectric coupling, the parallel magnetizations in the MTJ reorient to the x axis with opposite paths because of dipole interaction, thus resulting in antiparallel alignment. Moreover, this voltage switching of MTJs is nonvolatile owing to variations in dipole interaction and can be well understood via phase field simulations. The results provide an avenue to realize electrical switching of MTJs and are significant for exploring energy-efficient spintronic devices.

Synthesis and characterization of UiO-66-NH 2 incorporated graphene aerogel composites and their utilization for absorption of organic liquids

This work details the synthesis, materials characterization and absorption capacity of graphene aerogel (GA) loaded with UiO-66-NH 2 metal organic framework (MOF). Throughout the study, a series of density-tunable MOF/GA composites were synthesized by adjusting the MOF/graphene oxide (GO) mass ratio of the precursors before hydrothermal reduction and subsequent critical point drying to achieve MOF-x%/GA composites, with x, ranging from 0 to 100, denoting the weight percent ratio of MOF to GO in the starting solution. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) pore size calculations supported that MOF loading enlarged the macroporous (>50 nm) structure of the GA framework but had no influence on the mesoporous (2–50 nm) structure of GA. The degree of MOF loading first decreased and then increased the density of resulting composites, exhibiting a minimum for the 10–30% samples. Such behavior with respect to MOF loading has not been reported previously. MOF-x%/GA samples were further investigated for absorption capacity using various organic liquids. MOF-30%/GA proved to be the best absorbent sample for all solvents tested, achieving the highest capacity for chloroform at 147.0 ± 10.0 mg/mg. The behavior is attributed to the structural changes induced by the MOF incorporation as well as the interactions between the organic molecules and the MOF.
