Geothermal well testing pressure prediction by using a hybrid transformer model system: FORGE well use case

Geothermal has huge potential to become an indispensable component in achieving the goal of sustainable energy economy, given its capability to provide consistent baseload power to the electric grid. Injection tests are crucial in geothermal energy system as they naturally help to evaluate reservoir properties, understand fluid flow and even enhance reservoir performance. In this research, we developed a hybrid model system that integrates machine learning (ML) regression, a physics-based mathematical model, and transformer deep learning. Trained and validated using FORGE injection test dataset, this system can forecast the pressure variations both upward and downward over time. The pressure prediction achieved prediction accuracy within 3-6% variance of true pressure values. The system can significantly save time and reduce costs by testing only a few cycles and then using model predictions for further analysis, instead of conducting additional real injection cycle tests. The developed model system also holds promise for designing injection test processes and maintaining well production in geothermal energy. Presented at the IMAGE ‘25 Conference led by Shell.

Carbon storage cost modeling for the offshore Gulf of America

At the 2025 Annual University of Houston ROICE Workshop, Dr. Chung Shih delivered an invited talk titled "Carbon Storage Cost Modeling for the Offshore Gulf of America." This presentation highlighted the capabilities of NETL's offshore saline carbon storage cost model (CO2_S_COM_Offshore) in evaluating the economics of both new and reused storage infrastructure. While primarily intended for screening-level analysis, the model comprehensively considers critical components such as onshore facilities, pipelines connecting shore to offshore platforms, main platforms, and satellite platforms. Additionally, its integrated cashflow model encompasses the entire project lifecycle, from initial site screening to post-injection site care, providing users with a thorough understanding of how various operational or financial parameters impact project economics.

Fracture Network Quantification during CO2 Injection

This is the presentation prepared for the ARMA 2025 (59th US Rock Mechanics/Geomechanics Symposium) Conference held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, June 8-11, 2025. Accurate mapping and quantification of these networks are essential to ensure the integrity of CO2 storage reservoirs, understand and reduce potential leakage, and maintain long-term environmental safety. This study presents a novel machine learning-driven approach, integrated with geomechanical analysis, to quantify fracture networks and assess their spatial distribution during CO2 injection. This paper combines microseismic monitoring data with principles of hydraulic diffusivity and geomechanical analysis to characterize reservoir scale fracture network. The novelty of our approach lies in its capacity to assimilate time-dependent pressure data and microseismicity into a cohesive framework, which not only identifies microseismic triggering fronts but also tracks fracture distribution during active injection. Besides, leveraging image log data and analysis our approach also provides another angle of the insights to solidate the fracture networks understanding and geomechanical impacts. Key results from our study include the detection of over 100 distinct fracture clusters across the injection site, with fracture orientations strongly correlated with the prevailing in-situ stress field.

FlowDash Geothermal Energy Enhancer: Where is Next Geothermal Resource? Machine Learning + Multiple Datasets => Geothermal Exploration Indication?

This is the presentation delivered at the 2025 GEODE Datathon competition. GEODE is a consortium of experts that addresses technology and knowledge gaps in geothermal energy, leveraging technology and best practices from the oil and gas industry. NETL team was awarded the 1st place in the engineering track. 2025 GEODE Datathon had a total of 42 teams from top universities and several major industrial companies. This awarded work is founded on a robust idea and innovative approach that uses machine learning coupled to multiple datasets to visualize geothermal “sweet” spots/indications in Great Basin based on the data provided from the GEODE Datathon. The use case also leveraged other datasets and demonstrated insightful and valuable indications for geothermal exploration.
