Real-time optical associative retrieval technique

A real-time optical associative retrieval technique is presented. The associative retrieval model enables a large amount of data to be stored and recalled by partial information optically in real time. The real-time capability is achieved by using an electronically addressed spatial light modulator based on the pocket-size liquid crystal display television. The potential application of the technique to the perceptive vision requirements in telerobotics for achieving NASA's goals of automation in space is described.

Optical-data-processing properties of a liquid-crystal television spatial light modulator

The potential of an extremely inexpensive liquid-crystal television (LCTV) as a two-dimensional spatial light modulator has been investigated. The LCTV modulates the transmission of coherent or incoherent light and can either be electronically addressed through a microcomputer or optically addressed with a TV camera. The transmission characteristics of the device have been measured, its diffraction pattern is examined, and its use as an input device for an optical correlator is tested. It is discovered that, with proper modifications, it has potential for optical-data-processing applications.

Optical correlation of surface displacement

A coherent optical correlation technique is used to measure surface displacements. In the event that the surface roughness of the test object is invariant during the object's translation, the correlation intensity peak remains constant. A simple relationship between the displacement of the surface and the displacement of the peak correlation signal is found and experimentally verified.

Practical quantitative fringe interpretation in a composite mobile holographic nondestructive test system

A simplified theoretical model for the interpretation of the double-exposure holographic interference fringe loci due to the general three-dimensional displacements has been derived for the specific composite mobile holographic nondestructive test system. The model, representing a good approximation to a more tedious theoretical result, predicts that a combination of in-plane and out-of-plane displacements of the surface will produce concentric circular-shaped fringe patterns.

Applications of laser speckles in a holographic nondestructive test system

The grainy or speckle phenomenon of laser light is caused by two inherent characteristics of the laser - the coherence and monochromaticity of the radiation. Recent development have shown that this phenomenon can be used to measure minute surface displacements, surface strains, or vibrations of a body. The present paper deals with two techniques employing the speckle effect. One is called speckle beam holographic interferometry, and the other speckle photographic interferometry. A major advantage of the first technique is the elimination of the stringent vibration isolation requirement in existing holographic nondestructive test systems. The advantage of the second technique is that the resulting photographic data are sensitive only to the in-plane components of the surface variations. The basic principles and practical limitations of these techniques are discussed.

Electro-optic and holographic measurement techniques for the atmospheric sciences

A comprehensive examination is made of recent advanced research directions in the applications of electro-optical and holographic instrumentations and methods to atmospheric sciences problems. In addition, an overview is given of the in-house research program for environmental and atmospheric measurements with emphasis on particulates systems. Special treatment is made of the instrument methods and applications work in the areas of laser scattering spectrometers and pulsed holography sizing systems. Selected engineering tests data on space simulation chamber programs are discussed.

Electric current heating calibration of a laser holographic nondestructive test system

Holographic NDT was used to measure small surface displacements controlled by electric heating by detecting the difference of the interference fringe patterns as viewed through the hologram on a real time basis. A perforated aluminum test plate, with the holes used to position thin metal foils, was used in the experiment. One of the foils was connected to an electric power source and small displacements of the foil were caused and controlled by Ohmic heating. An He-Ne laser was used to perform the holography.

Laser holographic detection of tiny thin tapes beneath a thick opaque composite structure

Real-time laser holographic interferometry technique has been applied successfully in the detection of 1mm x 1mm x 0.025mm duct tapes hidden beneath a 150mm x 150mm x 16mm ceramic-epoxy-fiberglass sandwiched structure. The experimental results clearly demonstrate future applicability of this technique in the optical nondestructive detection of debonds and flaws in such composite structures.
