Superior Capacitive Energy-Storage Performance in Pb-Free Relaxors with a Simple Chemical Composition

Chemical design of lead-free relaxors with simultaneously high energy density (W rec ) and high efficiency (η) for capacitive energy-storage has been a big challenge for advanced electronic systems. The current situation indicates that realizing such superior energy-storage properties requires highly complex chemical components. Herein, we demonstrate that, via local structure design, an ultrahigh W rec of 10.1 J/cm 3 , concurrent with a high η of 90%, as well as excellent thermal and frequency stabilities can be achieved in a relaxor with a very simple chemical composition. By introducing 6s 2 lone pair stereochemical active Bi into the classical BaTiO 3 ferroelectric to generate a mismatch between A- and B-site polar displacements, a relaxor state with strong local polar fluctuations can be formed. Through advanced atomic-resolution displacement mapping and 3D reconstructing the nanoscale structure from neutron/X-ray total scattering, it is revealed that the localized Bi enhances the polar length largely at several perovskite unit cells and disrupts the long-range coherent Ti polar displacements, resulting in a slush-like structure with extremely small size polar clusters and strong local polar fluctuations. This favorable relaxor state exhibits substantially enhanced polarization, and minimized hysteresis at a high breakdown strength. This work offers a feasible avenue to chemically design new relaxors with a simple composition for high-performance capacitive energy-storage.

Exchange field enhanced upper critical field of the superconductivity in compressed antiferromagnetic EuTe2

Abstract Understanding the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism has been a longstanding challenge in condensed matter physics. Here we report high pressure studies on the C -type antiferromagnetic semiconductor EuTe 2 up to 36.0 GPa. A structural transition from the I4/mcm to the C2/m space group is identified at ~16 GPa. Superconductivity is observed above ~5 GPa in both structures. In the low-pressure phase, magnetoresistance measurements reveal strong couplings between the local moments of Eu 2+ and the conduction electrons of Te 5 p orbits. The upper critical field of superconductivity is well above the Pauli limit. While EuTe 2 becomes nonmagnetic in the high-pressure phase and the upper critical field drops below the Pauli limit. Our results demonstrate that the high upper critical field of EuTe 2 in the low-pressure phase is due to the exchange field compensation effect of Eu 2+ and the superconductivity in both structures may arise in the framework of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory.

Annealing in Argon Universally Upgrades the Na‐Storage Performance of Mn‐Based Layered Oxide Cathodes by Creating Bulk Oxygen Vacancies

Abstract Manganese‐rich layered oxide cathodes of sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) are extremely promising for large‐scale energy storage owing to their high capacities and cost effectiveness, while the Jahn–Teller (J–T) distortion and low operating potential of Mn redox largely hinder their practical applications. Herein, we reveal that annealing in argon rather than conventional air is a universal strategy to comprehensively upgrade the Na‐storage performance of Mn‐based oxide cathodes. Bulk oxygen vacancies are introduced via this method, leading to reduced Mn valence, lowered Mn 3 d‐ orbital energy level, and formation of the new‐concept Mn domains. As a result, the energy density of the model P2‐Na 0.75 Mg 0.25 Mn 0.75 O 2 cathode increases by ≈50 % benefiting from the improved specific capacity and operating potential of Mn redox. The Mn domains can disrupt the cooperative J–T distortion, greatly promoting the cycling stability. This exciting finding opens a new avenue towards high‐performance Mn‐based oxide cathodes for SIBs.

Emergence of high piezoelectricity from competing local polar order-disorder in relaxor ferroelectrics

Relaxor ferroelectrics are known for outstanding piezoelectric properties, finding a broad range of applications in advanced electromechanical devices. Decoding the origins of the enhanced properties, however, have long been complicated by the heterogeneous local structures. Here, we employ the advanced big-box refinement method by fitting neutron-, X-ray-based total scattering, and X-ray absorption spectrum simultaneously, to extract local atomic polar displacements and construct 3D polar configurations in the classical relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 –PbTiO 3 . Our results demonstrate that prevailing order-disorder character accompanied by the continuous rotation of local polar displacements commands the composition-driven global structure evolution. The omnidirectional local polar disordering appears as an indication of macroscopic relaxor characteristics. Combined with phase-field simulations, it demonstrates that the competing local polar order-disorder between different states with balanced local polar length and direction randomness leads to a flattening free-energy profile over a wide polar length, thus giving rise to high piezoelectricity. Our work clarifies that the critical structural feature required for high piezoelectricity is the competition states of local polar rather than relaxor.

GaSb doping facilitates conduction band convergence and improves thermoelectric performance in n-type PbS

P-type lead chalcogenides have superior thermoelectric performance because they exhibit the energy convergence of several valence bands. However, despite the existence of two conduction bands, there has been no report about conduction band (CB) convergence for n-type counterparts because of the large energy difference between them. Therefore, new strategies are required to manipulate the CBs if enhancing the electrical transport performance of n-type lead chalcogenides is to be achieved. PbS is a highly attractive member of the lead chalcogenides because of its high earth-abundance and low cost. Here, we report that the introduction of GaSb can successfully dope the PbS matrix with Ga and Sb atoms occupying the Pb site in its rock salt structure. GaSb doping leads to conduction band convergence and enlarged effective density of state mass for n-type PbS. This effect results in superior power factor and decreased lattice thermal conductivity caused by the soft phonon modes and point defect scattering of phonons. Consequently, a record-high average power factor PF avg of ~20.4 μW cm –1 K –2 and figure of merit ZT avg of ~0.84 in the temperature range of 400 K to 923 K were obtained, higher than any n- and p-type PbS-based thermoelectric materials.

CYCLIN‐DEPENDENT KINASE 8 positively regulates oil synthesis by activating WRINKLED1 transcription

Summary CYCLIN‐DEPENDENT KINASE 8 (CDK8), a component of the kinase module of the Mediator complex in Arabidopsis, is involved in many processes, including flowering, plant defense, drought, and energy stress responses. Here, we investigated cdk8 mutants and CDK8‐ overexpressing lines to evaluate whether CDK8 also plays a role in regulating lipid synthesis, an energy‐demanding anabolism. Quantitative lipid analysis demonstrated significant reductions in lipid synthesis rates and lipid accumulation in developing siliques and seedlings of cdk8 , and conversely, elevated lipid contents in wild‐type seed overexpressing CDK8 . Transactivation assays show that CDK8 is necessary for maximal transactivation of the master seed oil activator WRINKLED1 (WRI1) by the seed maturation transcription factor ABSCISIC ACID INSENSITIVE3, supporting a direct regulatory role of CDK8 in oil synthesis. Thermophoretic studies show GEMINIVIRUS REP INTERACTING KINASE1, an activating kinase of KIN10 (a catalytic subunit of SUCROSE NON‐FERMENTING1‐RELATED KINASE1), physically interacts with CDK8, resulting in its phosphorylation and degradation in the presence of KIN10. This work defines a mechanism whereby, once activated, KIN10 downregulates WRI1 expression and suppresses lipid synthesis via promoting the degradation of CDK8. The KIN10‐CDK8‐dependent regulation of lipid synthesis described herein is additional to our previously reported KIN10‐dependent phosphorylation and degradation of WRI1.

Tunable phase structure in NaNbO 3 ceramics by grain-size effect, electric field and heat treatment

Large polarization and strain change during antiferroelectric - ferroelectric phase transition under electric field is the foundation for realizing excellent electrical properties in antiferroelectric ceramics, therefore, the adjustment of antiferroelectricity and clarification of the corresponding mechanism is the foundation for controlling electrical properties. NaNbO3 is the most complex perovskite system showing multiple antiferroelectric phases in a wide temperature range, in which the antiferroelectricity shows obvious instability with changing external and internal conditions, namely the antiferroelectric phase can be adjusted by grain-size effect, electric field and heat treatment. According to the systematical study in terms of the Rietveld refinement of synchrotron XRD and Raman, NaNbO3 exhibits a ferrielectric P21ma structure at room temperature, the ferroelectric component of which increases with decreasing grain size. Two antiferroelectric tetragonal phases exist around Curie temperature TC before the entrance of antiferroelectric R phase zone, while an antiferroelectric monoclinic phase, which can be maintained to room temperature by annealing treatment, acts as the bridge for the depolarization of the poled NaNbO3 with ferroelectric Q phase. A detailed phase diagram mainly focused on the antiferroelectric phase zones of NaNbO3 is plotted, which gives a clear understanding about the polymorphic phase transitions under different conditions. Finally, the results concluded in this work would give a clear guidance for designing high-performance NaNbO3-based lead-free ceramics from the point of structure.

Achieving giant electrostrain of above 1% in (Bi,Na)TiO 3 -based lead-free piezoelectrics via introducing oxygen-defect composition

Piezoelectric ceramics have been extensively used in actuators, where the magnitude of electrostrain is key indicator for large-stroke actuation applications. Here, we propose an innovative strategy based on defect chemistry to form a defect-engineered morphotropic phase boundary and achieve a giant strain of 1.12% in lead-free Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 TiO 3 (BNT)–based ceramics. The incorporation of the hypothetical perovskite BaAlO 2.5 with nominal oxygen defect into BNT will form strongly polarized directional defect dipoles, leading to a strong pinning effect after aging. The large asymmetrical strain is mainly attributed to two factors: The defect dipoles along crystallographic [001] direction destroy the long-range ordering of the ferroelectric and activate a reversible phase transition while promoting polarization rotation when the dipoles are aligned along the applied electric field. Our results not only demonstrate the potential application of BNT-based materials in low-frequency, large-stroke actuators but also provide a general methodology to achieve large strain.

Modulating Electronic Structure of Atomically Dispersed Nickel Sites through Boron and Nitrogen Dual Coordination Boosts Oxygen Reduction

Abstract Atomically dispersed 3D transitional metal active sites with nitrogen coordination anchored on carbon support have emerged as a kind of promising electrocatalyst toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in the field of fuel cells and metal–air cells. However, it is still a challenge to accurately modulate the coordination structure of single‐atom metal sites, especially first‐shell coordination, as well as identify the relationship between the geometric/electronic structure and ORR performance. Herein, a carbon‐supported single‐atom nickel catalyst is fabricated with boron and nitrogen dual coordination (denoted as Ni‐B/N‐C). The hard X‐ray absorption spectrum result reveals that atomically dispersed Ni active sites are coordinated with one B atom and three N atoms in the first shell (denoted as Ni‐B 1 N 3 ). The Ni‐B/N‐C catalyst exhibits a half‐wave potential ( E 1/2 ) of 0.87 V versus RHE, along with a distinguished long‐term durability in alkaline media, which is superior to commercial Pt/C. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the Ni‐B 1 N 3 active sites are more favorable for the adsorption of ORR intermediates relative to Ni‐N 4 , leading to the reduction of thermodynamic barrier and the acceleration of reaction kinetics, which accounts for the increased intrinsic activity.
