A Nearly Zero-Strain Li-Rich Rock-Salt Oxide with Multielectron Redox Reactions as a Cathode for Li-Ion Batteries

Li-rich oxide cathodes are drawing increasing attention as next-generation cathode materials for the development of high-energy-density Li-ion batteries due to their strikingly high capacities. However, transition-metal migration, irreversible structural phase transformations, and the irreversible release of oxygen are responsible for rapid capacity and voltage decay. This study reports a Li-rich cation-ordered rock-salt oxide Li x V 0.4 Ti 0.4 O 2 (LVTO, x = 0.97/1.2) with space group Fd$\bar{3}$m that delivers a high capacity of over 250 mAh g -1 and capacity retention up to 89% after 50 cycles. A comprehensive experimental analysis confirms that the capacity can be attributed to the reversible V 3+ /V 5+ multielectron cationic redox reactions and a minor contribution from reversible anionic redox reactions. Importantly, LVTO exhibits nearly zero-strain behavior upon (dis)charge cycling cycles, which is associated with reversible V migration from octahedral to tetrahedral sites. Here our results demonstrate that Li-rich rock-salt oxide LVTO could be a promising cobalt-free cathode material for Li-ion batteries.

Interlaminar improvement of carbon fiber/epoxy composites via fluorine‐containing high‐epoxy‐value sizing agent

Abstract To improve the interfacial bonding effect of carbon fibers (CFs) and epoxy resins, we prepared a fluorine‐containing high‐epoxy‐value sizing agent (named TS) in this article. It is an emulsion with a more uniform particle size distribution and higher stability better than a commercial Takemoto sizing agent. In addition, sulfonic acid groups can improve the hydrophilicity of the TS, and the presence of epoxy groups enhances the wettability between CFs and the matrix. The properties of the sizing agents were examined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and thermogravimetric analysis. The sized CFs were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, monofilament tensile test, and dynamic contact angle. Afterward, CF/epoxy composites were prepared, and their fracture morphology and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) were examined. Results indicated that the TS sizing significantly increased the content of activated carbon on the surface of the CFs and improved the bonding effect between the fiber and the matrix. After TS was sized, the ILSS increased from 49.64 to 58.74 MPa, 18.34% higher than unsized CF/epoxy composites, showing the prominent interfacial reinforcement better than commercial Takemoto.

Defect–Concentration–Mediated T–Nb 2 O 5 Anodes for Durable and Fast–Charging Li–Ion Batteries

Metastable orthorhombic niobium pentoxide (T-Nb 2 O 5 ) is a promising anode to fulfill the requirements for high-rate Li-ion batteries (LIBs). Stoichiometric T-Nb 2 O 5 is plagued by low electric conductivity and particle pulverization after repeated charge/discharge processes. In this work, oxygen vacancies are implanted into T-Nb 2 O 5 particles via acid immersion of Nb 2 O 5 ·nH 2 O with the formation of Lewis acid sites. The multiple characterizations and simulations reveal the lengthening of Nb–O bonds, and the transformation from NbO 7 pentagonal bipyramids and NbO 6 tetragonal bipyramids in T-Nb 2 O 5–x . The enrichment of oxygen vacancies endows T-Nb 2 O 5–x with higher electric conductivity, better electrochemical kinetics, larger pseudocapacitive contribution. O-doped graphitic C 3 N 4 is creatively proposed as a trace oxygen pump to repair excessive oxygen vacancies, and it also serves as a sacrifice template for Nb 2 O 5–x growth to construct a porous and monolithic electrode network. Defect-modulated Nb 2 O 5–x displays extraordinary cycling stability (164 mAh g –1 at 5 C after 1100 cycles), high capacity retention (104 mAh g –1 ) at an ultrahigh rate (25 C), and large areal capacity (0.74 mAh cm –2 ) under high mass loading (4 mg cm –2 ). The practical prospect is proved by Nb 2 O 5–x /LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 full cells with high average platform (2.12 V) and high specific capacity (229 mAh g –1 ). Finally, the oxygen-defect modulation strategy on oxide anodes provides an alternative solution to fast-charging and durable LIBs.

Violation of the T –1 Relationship in the Lattice Thermal Conductivity of Mg 3 Sb 2 with Locally Asymmetric Vibrations

Most crystalline materials follow the guidelines of T –1 temperature-dependent lattice thermal conductivity (κ L ) at elevated temperatures. Here, we observe a weak temperature dependence of κ L in Mg 3 Sb 2 , T –0.48 from theory and T –0.57 from measurements, based on a comprehensive study combining ab initio molecular dynamics calculations and experimental measurements on single crystal Mg 3 Sb 2 . These results can be understood in terms of the so-called “phonon renormalization” effects due to the strong temperature dependence of the interatomic force constants (IFCs). The increasing temperature leads to the frequency upshifting for those low-frequency phonons dominating heat transport, and more importantly, the phonon-phonon interactions are weakened. In-depth analysis reveals that the phenomenon is closely related to the temperature-induced asymmetric movements of Mg atoms within MgSb 4 tetrahedron. With increasing temperature, these Mg atoms tend to locate at the areas with relatively low force in the force profile, leading to reduced effective 3 rd -order IFCs. The locally asymmetrical atomic movements at elevated temperatures can be further treated as an indicator of temperature-induced variations of IFCs and thus relatively strong phonon renormalization. The present work sheds light on the fundamental origins of anomalous temperature dependence of κ L in thermoelectrics.

Partial-Single-Atom, Partial-Nanoparticle Composites Enhance Water Dissociation for Hydrogen Evolution

The development of an efficient electrocatalyst toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of significant importance in transforming renewable electricity to pure and clean hydrogen by water splitting. However, the construction of an active electrocatalyst with multiple sites that can promote the dissociation of water molecules still remains a great challenge. Herein, a partial-single-atom, partial-nanoparticle composite consisting of nanosized ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles (NPs) and individual Ru atoms as an energy-efficient HER catalyst in alkaline medium is reported. The formation of this unique composite mainly results from the dispersion of Ru NPs to small-size NPs and single atoms (SAs) on the Fe/N codoped carbon (Fe–N–C) substrate due to the thermodynamic stability. The optimal catalyst exhibits an outstanding HER activity with an ultralow overpotential (9 mV) at 10 mA cm -2 (η 10 ), a high turnover frequency (8.9 H 2 s -1 at 50 mV overpotential), and nearly 100% Faraday efficiency, outperforming the state-of-the-art commercial Pt/C and other reported HER electrocatalysts in alkaline condition. Both experimental and theoretical calculations reveal that the coexistence of Ru NPs and SAs can improve the hydride coupling and water dissociation kinetics, thus synergistically enhancing alkaline hydrogen evolution performance.

Engineering Active Fe Sites on Nickel–Iron Layered Double Hydroxide through Component Segregation for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) is a promising oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst under alkaline conditions. Much research has been performed to understand the structure-activity relationship of NiFe LDH under OER conditions. However, the specific role of the Fe species remains unclear and under debate. Herein, based on DFT calculations, it was discovered that the edge Fe sites show higher activity towards OER than either the edge Ni sites or lattice sites. Therefore, a facile acid-etching method was proposed to controllably induce the formation of edge Fe sites in NiFe LDH, and the obtained sample exhibited higher OER activity. X-ray absorption near edge structure and extended X-ray absorption fine structure analyses further revealed that the interaction of the edge Fe species with Ni is believed to contribute to the enhancement of the OER performance. This work provides a new understanding of the structure-activity relationship in NiFe LDH and offers a facile method for the design of efficient electrocatalysts in an alkaline environment.
