Highly active, ultra-low loading single-atom iron catalysts for catalytic transfer hydrogenation

Highly effective and selective noble metal-free catalysts attract significant attention. Here, a single-atom iron catalyst is fabricated by saturated adsorption of trace iron onto zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) followed by pyrolysis. Its performance toward catalytic transfer hydrogenation of furfural is comparable to state-of-the-art catalysts and up to four orders higher than other Fe catalysts. Isotopic labeling experiments demonstrate an intermolecular hydride transfer mechanism. First principles simulations, spectroscopic calculations and experiments, and kinetic correlations reveal that the synthesis creates pyrrolic Fe(II)-plN 3 as the active center whose flexibility manifested by being pulled out of the plane, enabled by defects, is crucial for collocating the reagents and allowing the chemistry to proceed. The catalyst catalyzes chemoselectively several substrates and possesses a unique trait whereby the chemistry is hindered for more acidic substrates than the hydrogen donors. This work paves the way toward noble-metal free single-atom catalysts for important chemical reactions.

Quasi-static magnetic compression of field-reversed configuration plasma: amended scalings and limits from two-dimensional MHD equilibrium

In this work, several key scaling laws of the quasi-static magnetic compression of field reversed configuration (FRC) plasma (Spencer et al 1983 Phys. Fluids 26 1564) are amended from a series of two-dimensional FRC MHD equilibriums numerically obtained using the Grad–Shafranov equation solver NIMEQ. Based on the new scaling for the elongation and the magnetic fields at the separatrix and the wall, the empirically stable limits for the compression ratio, the fusion gain, and the neutron yield are evaluated, which may serve as a more accurate estimate for the upper ceiling of performance from the magnetic compression of FRC plasma as a potential fusion energy as well as neutron source devices.

Nitrogen-doped carbon for selective pseudo-metal-free hydrodeoxygenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-dimethylfuran: Importance of trace iron impurity

Heteroatoms-doped carbon materials have recently emerged as effective catalysts for various chemical and electrochemical reactions. The free of metals especially noble metals reduces cost and eliminates issues like sintering or leaching of metals at elevated temperatures in solvents. In this work, selective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) is for the first time achieved over simple nitrogen-doped carbon (N-C) catalysts. Further, at optimal reaction conditions, a 91% yield of DMF is obtained with excellent catalyst stability. Extensive characterization, including extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (sXAS), model reactions, basic data science analysis, and DFT calculations suggest that ppm of Fe in particular FeN 3 sites formed in pyrolysis, rather than non-metallic elements, drive key steps such as H 2 activation and deoxygenation of –OH during HMF HDO.

Two-dimensional shaping of Solov'ev equilibrium with vacuum using external coils

In this work, we demonstrate a method for constructing the Solov'ev equilibrium with any given 2D shape surrounded by a vacuum region using external poloidal field coils, based on the method previously developed by T. Xu and R. Fitzpatrick [Nuclear Fusion, 59, 064002 (2019)]. The computational domain consists of two parts: the plasma region, where the solution is the same as the Solov'ev solution, and the vacuum region, where the magnetic field generated by external coils as well as plasma current is determined using the Green function method through a matching condition near the separatrix. However, the method is not limited to the Solov'ev equilibrium in particular. In conclusion, the accuracy, efficiency, and robustness of such a scheme suggest that this method may be applied to the 2D shaping of a tokamak plasma with a vacuum region using external coils in general.

Brachypodium Phenylalanine Ammonia Lyase (PAL) Promotes Antiviral Defenses against Panicum mosaic virus and Its Satellites

Brachypodium distachyon has recently emerged as a premier model plant for monocot biology, akin to Arabidopsis thaliana. We previously reported genome-wide transcriptomic and alternative splicing changes occurring in Brachypodium during compatible infections with Panicum mosaic virus (PMV) and its satellite virus (SPMV). Here, we dissected the role of Brachypodium phenylalanine ammonia lyase 1 (PAL1), a key enzyme for phenylpropanoid and salicylic acid (SA) biosynthesis and the induction of plant defenses. Targeted metabolomics profiling of PMV-infected and PMV- plus SPMV-infected (PMV/SPMV) Brachypodium plants revealed enhanced levels of multiple defense-related hormones and metabolites such as cinnamic acid, SA, and fatty acids and lignin precursors during disease progression. The virus-induced accumulation of SA and lignin was significantly suppressed upon knockdown of B. distachyon PAL1 (BdPAL1) using RNA interference (RNAi). The compromised SA accumulation in PMV/SPMV-infected BdPAL1 RNAi plants correlated with weaker induction of multiple SA-related defense gene markers (pathogenesis related 1 [PR-1], PR-3, PR-5, and WRKY75) and enhanced susceptibility to PMV/SPMV compared to that of wild-type (WT) plants. Furthermore, exogenous application of SA alleviated the PMV/SPMV necrotic disease phenotypes and delayed plant death caused by single and mixed infections. Together, our results support an antiviral role for BdPAL1 during compatible host-virus interaction, perhaps as a last resort attempt to rescue the infected plant.
