Enhanced Oxygen Activation Achieved by Robust Single Chromium Atom-Derived Catalysts in Aerobic Oxidative Desulfurization

Oxidative desulfurization (ODS) plays critical roles in the production of high-quality sulfur impurity-free fuels, especially procedures using molecular oxygen as the sole oxidant. However, the state-of-the-art systems still rely on noble metal nanocatalysts, with deactivation issues caused by coking and sintering still present. In this work, leveraging the merits of single-atom catalysts (SACs) with earth-abundant metal cores and robust nanoporous supports, a series of catalysts composed of homogeneously distributed single chromium atoms anchored on multiwalled carbon nanotubes were fabricated and deployed to catalyze the aerobic ODS transformation. Adopting aromatic sulfur compound (ASC)-containing alkanes as a model system with molecular oxygen as the oxidant, efficient oxygen-to-active O 2 •– transformation and subsequent ASCs-to-sulfone conversion have been achieved, with the former benefiting from the chromium-active sites and the latter arising from the robust, nanoporous, and π-conjugated architecture of the supports. The attractive catalytic performance and cycling stability of the chromium-based SACs make them promising candidates in practical sulfur species removal from liquid fuels, supplying an alternative guidance on the catalyst design toward cost-effective and energy-efficient ODS procedures.

A bifunctional zeolitic porous liquid with incompatible Lewis pairs for antagonistic cascade catalysis

The emergence of porous liquids (PLs) opened opportunities to form unique antagonistic systems capable of fulfilling cascade reactions promoted by incompatible active sites in one pot, which is a long-term challenging subject in catalysis. Herein, unique bifunctional type III PL-based systems were facilely fabricated via assembly of zeolite nanosheets with ionic liquids. Rational structural design afforded PLs that feature high zeolite concentration, stable dispersion after 2 years, abundant cavity distribution, and involvement of antagonistic groups (acid and base sites) in separated and active form via steric hindrance control and electronic repulsion regulation. These unique properties worked cooperatively to fulfill the cascade deacetalization-Knoevenagel/Aldol condensation in one pot with superior catalytic efficiency outperforming the traditional systems. The key to success lies in the formation of bifunctional composites, transformation of zeolite from heterogeneous to homogeneous via surface modification, as well as rapid mass transfer ensured by the rigid porous architecture.

Overcoming the phase separation within high-entropy metal carbide by poly(ionic liquid)s

High-entropy crystalline materials are attracting more attention. In principle, high-entropy metal carbides (HMCs) that contain five or more metal ions, possess more negative free energy value during catalysis. But its preparation is challenging because of the immiscibility of multi metal cations in a single carbide solid solution. Here, a rational strategy for preparing HMC is proposed via a coordination-assisted crystallization process in the presence of Br-based poly(ionic liquids). Through this method, Mo 0.2 W 0.2 V 0.2 Cr 0.2 Nb 0.2 C nanoparticles, with a single cubic phase structure, incorporated on porous carbon, are obtained (HMC@NC). By combination of well dispersed small particle size (~4 nm), high surface area (~270 m 2 g –1 ), and high-entropy phase, HMC@NC can function as a promising catalyst for the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene. Here, unexpected activity (EB conv.: 73%) and thermal stability (>100 h on steam) at 450 °C are observed. Such a facile synthetic strategy may inspire the fabrication of other types of HMCs for more specific tasks.

Entropy-stabilized single-atom Pd catalysts via high-entropy fluorite oxide supports

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted considerable attention in the catalysis community. However, fabricating intrinsically stable SACs on traditional supports (N-doped carbon, metal oxides, etc.) remains a formidable challenge, especially under high-temperature conditions. Here, we report a novel entropy-driven strategy to stabilize Pd single-atom on the high-entropy fluorite oxides (CeZrHfTiLa)O x (HEFO) as the support by a combination of mechanical milling with calcination at 900 °C. Characterization results reveal that single Pd atoms are incorporated into HEFO (Pd1@HEFO) sublattice by forming stable Pd–O–M bonds (M = Ce/Zr/La). Compared to the traditional support stabilized catalysts such as Pd@CeO 2 , Pd 1 @HEFO affords the improved reducibility of lattice oxygen and the existence of stable Pd–O–M species, thus exhibiting not only higher low-temperature CO oxidation activity but also outstanding resistance to thermal and hydrothermal degradation. This work therefore exemplifies the superiority of high-entropy materials for the preparation of SACs.

Deep Understanding of Strong Metal Interface Confinement: A Journey of Pd/FeO x Catalysts

Tuning the atomic interface configuration of noble metals (NMs) and transition-metal oxides is an effective straightforward yet challenging strategy to modulate the activity and stability of heterogeneous catalysts. Herein, Pd supported on mesoporous Fe 2 O 3 with a high specific surface area was rationally designed and chosen to construct the Pd/iron oxide interface. As a versatile model, the physicochemical environments of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) could be precisely controlled by taming the reduction temperature. The experimental and density functional theory calculation results unveiled that the catalyst in the support–metal interface confinement (SMIC) state showed significantly enhanced catalytic activity and sintering resistance for CO oxidation. The constructed Fe sites at the interfaces between FeO x overlayers and Pd NPs not only provided additional coordinative unsaturated ferrous sites for the adsorption and activation of O 2 , thereby facilitating the activation efficiency of O 2 , but also impressively changed the reaction pathway of CO oxidation. As a result, the catalyst followed the Pd/Fe dual-site mechanism instead of the classical Mars–van Krevelen mechanism. For the catalyst in the strong metal–support interaction (SMSI) state, its catalytic activity was seriously suppressed because of the excessive encapsulation of the active Pd sites by FeO x overlayers. Thus, the present study therefore provides detailed insights into the SMIC and SMSI in ferric oxide-supported Pd catalysts, which could guide the preparation of highly efficient supported catalysts for practical applications.

Ionic Liquid–Directed Nanoporous TiNb 2 O 7 Anodes with Superior Performance for Fast–Rechargeable Lithium–Ion Batteries

Nanoporous TiNb 2 O 7 (NPTNO) material is synthesized by a sol–gel method with an ionic liquid (IL) as the nanoporous structure directing template. NPTNO exhibits a high reversible capacity of 210 mAh g –1 even at the charging rate of 50 C and an excellent cyclability of half-cell capacity retention of 74% for 1000 cycles at 5 C and LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 -coupled full-cell capacity retentions of 81% and 87% for 1000 cycles at 1 C and 2 C, respectively. The studies of the 1000 cycled NPTNO electrode illustrate that the IL-directed mesoporous structure can enhance the cyclability of NPTNO cells due to the alleviation of repetitive mechanical stress and volume fluctuation induced by the repetitive Li + insertion-extraction processes. The measured Li + diffusion coefficients from the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique suggest that the IL-templating strategy indeed ensures the fast rechargeability of NPTNO cells based on the fast Li + diffusion kinetics. Benefitting from the nanoporous structure, NPTNO with unhindered Li + diffusion pathways achieves a superior rate capability in the titanium-based oxide materials and the best full-cell cyclability in the TNO materials. Furthermore, the templating potential of IL is demonstrated, and the superb electrochemical performance establishes the IL-directed NPTNO as a promising anode candidate for fast-rechargeable LIBs.

An ultrastable heterostructured oxide catalyst based on high-entropy materials: A new strategy toward catalyst stabilization via synergistic interfacial interaction

Designing high–performance catalysts that can stabilize catalytic active sites against sintering to deactivation at temperature higher than 900°C is significant but challenging. In this work, we report a new strategy to obtain a transition metal oxide catalyst with high temperature stability for CO oxidation. This is achieved through a synergistic interfacial interaction at the interface of a heterostructure between high– entropy oxides (HEO, high temperature stability) and CuCeO x (catalytic site). The catalytic site (CuCeO x ) for CO oxidation is realized by dissolving an amount of Cu species in HEO into CeO 2 via an entropy–driven mechanochemical process. In situ XRD and HAADF–STEM have confirmed the high temperature stability of the heterostructure CuCeO x –HEO, which can remain its CO oxidation catalytic activity at elevated temperatures. It should be expected that this innovative will offer the potential to the synthesis of catalysts with high temperature stability in industry.

Rapid microwave-assisted preparation of high-performance bifunctional Ni3Fe/Co-N-C for rechargeable Zn-air battery

Precious metal-free bifunctional catalysts offer scalable possibilities for achieving oxygen cathodes in rechargeable metal-air batteries. Literature thus far suggests that the oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (i.e ORR and OER) take place at different active sites. However, the design and preparation of oxygen electrocatalysts with high-performance is still a great challenge. This work develops a general approach to introduce a nanoparticle that offers oxygen evolution reaction sites onto an oxygen reduction reaction catalyst via rapid microwave treatment. The metal–organic frameworks (Co, ZIF-8) derived Co-N-C with high ORR performance is employed as a support to homogeneously disperse OER active Ni3Fe nanoparticles. Potentials of 1.54 V and 0.79 V have been achieved at current densities of 10 mA cm -2 for OER and 3 mA cm -2 toward ORR, respectively. The developed rechargeable Zn-air battery assembled with Ni 3 Fe/Co-N-C as an oxygen-electrode exhibits superior efficiency and robust durability, exceeding that of commercial Pt/C + IrO 2 . Furthermore, the satisfactory activity of our fabricated wristband shows the successfully practical application of flexible Zn-air batteries for wearable devices.
