Lithium-compatible and air-stable vacancy-rich Li 9 N 2 Cl 3 for high–areal capacity, long-cycling all–solid-state lithium metal batteries

Attaining substantial areal capacity (>3 mAh/cm 2 ) and extended cycle longevity in all–solid-state lithium metal batteries necessitates the implementation of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) capable of withstanding elevated critical current densities and capacities. In this study, we report a high-performing vacancy-rich Li 9 N 2 Cl 3 SSE demonstrating excellent lithium compatibility and atmospheric stability and enabling high–areal capacity, long-lasting all–solid-state lithium metal batteries. The Li 9 N 2 Cl 3 facilitates efficient lithium-ion transport due to its disordered lattice structure and presence of vacancies. Notably, it resists dendrite formation at 10 mA/cm 2 and 10 mAh/cm 2 due to its intrinsic lithium metal stability. Furthermore, it exhibits robust dry-air stability. Incorporating this SSE in Ni-rich LiNi 0.83 Co 0.11 Mn 0.06 O 2 cathode-based all–solid-state batteries, we achieve substantial cycling stability (90.35% capacity retention over 1500 cycles at 0.5 C) and high areal capacity (4.8 mAh/cm 2 in pouch cells). These findings pave the way for lithium metal batteries to meet electric vehicle performance demands.

Local Chemical Clustering Enabled Ultrahigh Capacitive Energy Storage in Pb-Free Relaxors

Designing Pb-free relaxors with both a high capacitive energy density (W rec ) and high storage efficiency (η) remains a remarkable challenge for cutting-edge pulsed power technologies. Local compositional heterogeneity is crucial for achieving complex polar structure in solid solution relaxors, but its role in optimizing energy storage properties is often overlooked. Here, in this paper, we report that an exceptionally high W rec of 15.2 J cm –3 along with an ultrahigh η of 91% can be achieved through designing local chemical clustering in Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 TiO 3 –BaTiO 3 -based relaxors. A three-dimensional atomistic model derived from neutron/X-ray total scattering combined with reverse Monte Carlo method reveals the presence of subnanometer scale clustering of Bi, Na, and Ba, which host differentiated polar displacements, and confirming the prediction by density functional theory calculations. This leads to a polar state with small polar clusters and strong length and direction fluctuations in unit-cell polar vectors, thus manifesting improved high-field polarizability, steadily reduced hysteresis, and high breakdown strength macroscopically. The favorable polar structure features also result in a unique field-increased η, excellent stability, and superior discharge capacity. Our work demonstrates that the hidden local chemical order exerts a significant impact on the polarization characteristic of relaxors, and can be exploited for accessing superior energy storage performance.

Electrochemical Control of Magnetism on the Breathing Kagome Network of Li x ScMo 3 O 8

Controlling properties within a given functional inorganic material structure type is often accomplished through tuning the electronic occupation, which is in turn dictated by the elemental composition determined at the time of material preparation. We employ electrochemical control of the lithium content, with associated electronic occupancy control, to vary the magnetic properties of a material where a kagome-derived network of Mo 3 triangles carry the spin. In this case, Li is electrochemically inserted into LiScMo 3 O 8 , a layered compound containing a breathing Mo kagome network. Up to two additional Li can be inserted into LiScMo 3 O 8 , transforming it into Li 3 ScMo 3 O 8 . Li 2 ScMo 3 O 8 prepared by electrochemical lithiation is compared to the quantum spin liquid candidate compound Li 2 ScMo 3 O 8 prepared through high-temperature solid-state methods, which has a slightly different structural stacking sequence but a similar kagome-derived network. Magnetic measurements are supported by first-principles calculations, showing that electrons remain localized on the Mo clusters throughout the doping series. As x is varied in Li x ScMo 3 O 8 , the measurements and calculations reveal the evolution from a diamagnetic band insulator at x = 1 to a geometrically frustrated magnet at x = 2, back to a diamagnetic insulator at x = 3. These results indicate a likelihood of strong coupling between the degree of Li disorder and charge/magnetic ordering over the Mo 3 clusters.

Modeling Short-Range Order in Disordered Rocksalt Cathodes by Pair Distribution Function Analysis

Pair distribution function (PDF) analysis is a powerful technique for the characterization of short-range order (SRO) in disordered materials. Accurate interpretation of experimental PDF data is critically reliant on the development of structural models that can account for local variations in site occupancies and bond lengths. To this end, we outline an approach to model SRO using first-principles calculations based on the cluster-expansion formalism. These methods are validated on neutron scattering data from two disordered rocksalt oxyfluorides, Li 1.3 Mn 0.4 Ti 0.3 O 1.7 F 0.3 and Li 1.3 Mn 0.4 Nb 0.2 Ti 0.1 O 1.7 F 0.3 . For each composition, we demonstrate that an average structure without any SRO fails to reproduce several key features in the experimental PDF. To pinpoint the origin of the suspected SRO in these materials, configurational and displacive effects were separately investigated using two disparate models. Special quasi-random structures were relaxed using density functional theory to account for local changes in bond lengths while maintaining a near-random ionic configuration. This leads to slightly improved accuracy but still misrepresents asymmetry in the first few peaks of the PDF. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to model configurational SRO on a fixed lattice, which by itself is shown to have a minimal influence on the PDF. Instead, we find that it is the bond length relaxations within environments created by SRO which controls the details of the PDF, thereby highlighting the subtle but important coupling between configurational and displacive SRO in disordered materials.

Scaling behavior of order parameters for the hybrid improper ferroelectric (Ca, Sr) 3 Ti 2 O 7

Here, we show that in contrast to the conventional view of a mean-field Landau-type behavior, the oxygen octahedral tilt ($\textit{R}$) and polarization (P) in the $A_3B_2\text{O}_7$ Ruddlesden-Popper hybrid improper ferroelectric (Ca,Sr) 3 Ti 2 O 7 exhibits the scaling behavior of a 2D Ising class near the para-to-ferroelectric transition temperature ($T_c$). We also show that $\textit{P}$ exhibits an additional transition from a 2D Ising to a 3D mean-field critical behavior at a temperature $T_{\text{d}} < T_{\text{c}}$, which is driven by enhanced interlayer dipolar correlations due to an increase in the ferroelectrically active $\textit{B}$-site centered dipoles.

Chemical Design of Pb-Free Relaxors for Giant Capacitive Energy Storage

Dielectric capacitors have captured substantial attention for advanced electrical and electronic systems. Developing dielectrics with high energy density and high storage efficiency is challenging owing to the high compositional diversity and the lack of general guidelines. Herein, we propose a map that captures the structural distortion ($\delta$) and tolerance factor (t) of perovskites to design Pb-free relaxors with extremely high capacitive energy storage. Our map shows how to select ferroelectric with large $\delta$ and paraelectric components to form relaxors with a t value close to 1 and thus obtaining eliminated hysteresis and large polarization under a high electric breakdown. Taking the Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 TiO 3 -based solid solution as an example, we demonstrate that composition-driven predominant order-disorder characteristic of local atomic polar displacements endows the relaxor with a slushlike structure and strong local polar fluctuations at several nanoscale. This leads to a giant recoverable energy density of 13.6 J cm -3 , along with an ultrahigh efficiency of 94%, which is far beyond the current performance boundary reported in Pb-free bulk ceramics. In conclusion, our work provides a solution through rational chemical design for obtaining Pb-free relaxors with outstanding energy-storage properties.

Expandable Li Percolation Network: The Effects of Site Distortion in Cation-Disordered Rock-Salt Cathode Material

Cation-disordered rock-salt (DRX) materials receive intensive attention as a new class of cathode candidates for high-capacity lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Unlike traditional layered cathode materials, DRX materials have a three-dimensional (3D) percolation network for Li + transportation. The disordered structure poses a grand challenge to a thorough understanding of the percolation network due to its multiscale complexity. In this work, we introduce the large supercell modeling for DRX material Li 1.16 Ti 0.37 Ni 0.37 Nb 0.10 O 2 (LTNNO) via the reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) method combined with neutron total scattering. Here, through a quantitative statistical analysis of the material’s local atomic environment, we experimentally verified the existence of short-range ordering (SRO) and uncovered an element-dependent behavior of transition metal (TM) site distortion. A displacement from the original octahedral site for Ti 4+ cations is pervasive throughout the DRX lattice. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that site distortions quantified by the centroid offsets could alter the migration barrier for Li + diffusion through the tetrahedral channels, which can expand the previously proposed theoretical percolating network of Li. The estimated accessible Li content is highly consistent with the observed charging capacity. The newly developed characterization method here uncovers the expandable nature of the Li percolation network in DRX materials, which may provide valuable guidelines for the design of superior DRX materials.

Reversible Electrochemical Lithium Cycling in a Vanadium(IV)- and Niobium(V)-Based Wadsley–Roth Phase

Fast charging remains one of the greatest safety challenges in Li-ion batteries due to Li-dendrite growth occurring on graphite anodes if they are lithiated too quickly. The search for high-rate anodes has highlighted materials in the Wadsley–Roth (WR) shear phase family. The relative abundance of V compared with traditional WR compositions of Nb and W makes V-based phases attractive. However, the high voltage and poor reversibility typically associated with V redox have made V-rich WR phases less studied than Nb- and W-rich phases. Here, we show that a new V-rich Wadsley–Roth phase, V 7 Nb 6 O 29 , achieves excellent rate capability and 80% capacity retention after 228 cycles with a relatively low average voltage of 1.76 V vs Li/Li + compared with other V-rich WR phases. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals a P4/m space group with repeating 2 × 2 × ∞ and 3 × 3 × ∞ blocks of V 4+ and Nb 5+ octahedra. Finally, combined neutron pair distribution function analysis, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations show that V redox is the primary source of capacity and that cycling stability is provided by the stable octahedral coordination adopted by V 4+ in the material.

Medium-Range Ordering in the Ionic Glass Electrolytes LiPON and LiSiPON

In this work, we provide an in-depth structural characterization of the amorphous ionic glasses LiPON and LiSiPON with high Li content. Based on ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, the structure of these materials is an inverted structure with either isolated polyanion tetrahedra or polyanion dimers in a Li+ matrix. Based on neutron scattering data, this type of inverted structure leads to a significant amount of medium-range ordering in the structure, as demonstrated by two sharp diffraction peaks and a periodic structural oscillation in the density function G(r). While this medium-range ordering is commonly observed in liquids and metallic glasses, it has not previously been observed in oxides. On a local scale, adding N and Si increases the number of anion bridges and polyanion dimer structures, leading to higher ionic conductivity. In the medium-range ordering, the addition of Si leads to more disorder in the polyanion substructure but a significant increase in the ordering of the O substructure. Finally, we demonstrate that this inverted structure with medium-range ordering results in a glassy material that is both mechanically stiff and ductile on the nanoscale.

In Situ Neutron Scattering Study of the Structure Dynamics of the Ru/Ca 2 N:e – Catalyst in Ammonia Synthesis

NH 3 synthesis is one of the most critical industrial processes. Compared to commercial iron catalysts, Ru catalysts show high intrinsic activity in this reaction but suffer from hydrogen poisoning. By loading Ru onto supports such as electrides and hydrides, the hydrogen poisoning problem can be significantly alleviated. However, relevant studies on the structural dynamics of the Ru/electride catalysts under reaction conditions are very scarce. Taking advantage of the high sensitivity to hydrogen species, it is possible to obtain insights into the structural changes during the reaction using in situ neutron techniques. In this study, we have investigated the structural evolution of the Ru/Ca 2 N:e – catalyst during the ammonia synthesis reaction by in situ neutron scattering (inelastic neutron scattering, INS) technique. In situ INS experiments suggest that Ca 2 N:e – is likely converted to the Ca 2 NH phase during the reaction. Unlike the previously known structure where H and N atoms are intermixed, the formed Ca 2 NH exhibits a segregated structure where the H and N atoms are located in different layers separated by the Ca layer. In conclusion, density functional theory calculations of the reaction energetics reveal that there are minor changes in the barriers and thermodynamics of the first N hydrogenation step between the two phases (Ca 2 NH phase with segregated H/N layers and intermixed Ca 2 NH phase), suggesting the impact of the phases on the reaction kinetics to be relatively minimal.

Zero thermal expansion in non-stoichiometric and single-phase (Hf,Nb)Fe 2.5 alloy

Zero thermal expansion (ZTE) alloys are dimensionally stable under the influence of heat, which is critical in high-precision components but remains rare among single phase materials. This work reports a single phase and nearly isotropic ZTE alloy (Hf 0.8 Nb 0.2 )Fe 2.5 over a wide temperature range of 5–460 K ($α_l ≈ 1.07 × 10^{–6} K^{–1}$) via non-stoichiometric regulation. The introduction of excess Fe breaks the dual-phase nature of parent alloy, extends the magnetic ordering temperature, and induces a spin reorientation. Further, the evolution of magnetic structure versus temperature gives rise to the ZTE behavior. The design concept of changing the internal magnetic interaction through non-stoichiometric regulation provides support for the discovery of novel ZTE materials.

In Situ Neutron Scattering Studies on the Oxidation and Reduction of CeO 2 and Pt–CeO 2 Nanorods

The oxygen vacancy structure of ceria plays a key role in its performance as a favored material for catalysis applications. Here, in this work, we develop an understanding of the effects of Pt loading on the structural evolution of ceria nanorods under redox gas environments that mimic real automotive catalytic converters. In situ neutron scattering studies under redox flow reveal that both CeO 2 and Pt–CeO 2 nanorods share a bulk fluorite structure with the presence of surface Frenkel-type oxygen defects. However, Pt–CeO 2 nanorods are more easily reducible than CeO 2 rods as evidenced by an increased concentration of Ce 3+ , determined by NAP-XPS. Importantly, this work finds no evidence of oxygen vacancy ordered surface reconstruction which has been reported in earlier ex situ investigations. Thus, this work highlights the discrepancy between ex situ and in situ structural observations and emphasizes the need for robust in situ investigations of catalysts to develop industrially relevant materials.

Chemical heterogeneity modulated zero thermal expansion alloy over super-wide temperature range

Chemical heterogeneity is usually avoided in solution chemistry, but it may still occur with sometimes dramatic effects on target materials and their properties. Here, we propose chemical heterogeneity as a counterintuitive strategy to design high-performance zero thermal expansion (ZTE) alloys. We apply this approach in a Hf-Ti-Fe alloy with excess Fe in the Hf/Ti sublattice and produce Hf/Ti concentration alternations at the micro level. Such chemical heterogeneity regulates local magnetic interactions in alloy and triggers a dispersed magnetic phase transition that modulates the thermal expansions at the micro level and hence results in a remarkable ZTE behavior over a super-wide temperature window from 10 to 480 K. This mechanism is supported by comprehensive studies on morphological microstructures, crystal and magnetic structures, and theoretical calculations. The strategy of local chemical heterogeneity opens up an avenue to design ZTE and the related functional materials directly via microstructure engineering.

Lorentz factor for time-of-flight neutron Bragg and total scattering

We report the three fundamental origins of the Lorentz factor for neutron time-of-flight powder diffraction are revisited. A detailed derivation of the Lorentz factor is presented in the context of diffuse scattering modelling in reciprocal space when perfect periodicity is assumed, and the total scattering pattern is constructed in its discrete form – the factor in this case becomes 1/Q 2 (or d 2 ). Discussion is also presented with respect to practical data reduction where a vanadium measurement is usually taken as the normalization factor (to account for various factors such as detector efficiency), and it is shown that the existence of the Lorentz factor is independent of such a normalization process.

Double Paddle‐Wheel Enhanced Sodium Ion Conduction in an Antiperovskite Solid Electrolyte

Abstract Antiperovskite structure compounds (X 3 AB, where X is an alkali cation and A and B are anions) have the potential for highly correlated motion between the cation and a cluster anion on the A or B site. This so‐called “paddle‐wheel” mechanism may be the basis for enhanced cation mobility in solid electrolytes. Through combined experiments and modeling, the first instance of a double paddle‐wheel mechanism, leading to fast sodium ion conduction in the antiperovskite Na 3− x O 1− x (NH 2 ) x (BH 4 ), is shown. As the concentration of amide (NH 2 − ) cluster anions is increased, large positive deviations in ionic conductivity above that predicted from a vacancy diffusion model are observed. Using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, powder X‐ray diffraction, synchrotron X‐ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, and NMR, the cluster anion rotational dynamics are characterized and it is found that cation mobility is influenced by the rotation of both NH 2 − and BH 4 − species, resulting in sodium ion conductivity a factor of 10 2 higher at x = 1 than expected for the vacancy mechanism alone. Generalization of this phenomenon to other compounds could accelerate fast ion conductor exploration and design.

Effect of Local Structural Distortions on Antiferroelectric–Ferroelectric Phase Transition in Dilute Solid Solutions of K x Na 1– x NbO 3

The fundamental principles that govern antiferroelectric (AFE)–ferroelectric (FE) transitions are not well understood for many solid solutions of perovskite compounds. For example, crystal chemical considerations based on the average Goldschmidt tolerance factor or ionic polarizability do not precisely predict the boundary between the AFE and FE phases in dilute solid solutions of alkali niobates, such as K x Na 1– x NbO 3 ( x ≤ 0.02). Here, based on detailed structural analysis from neutron total scattering experiments, we provide insights about how the relative local distortions around the A- and B-sites of the ABO 3 perovskite structure affect the AFE/FE order of the average crystallographic phases in K x Na 1– x NbO 3 . Specifically, we show that a higher (lower) ratio of B-site-centered distortions over A-site-centered distortions drives transition toward a long-range FE (AFE) phase, which is based on a competition between the long-range polarizing field of the Nb–O dipoles and the disordering effect of local distortions around the A-site. Our study provides a predictive tool for designing complex solid-solution perovskites with tunable (anti)ferroelectric polarization properties, which can be of interest for various energy-related applications such as high-density energy storage and solid-state cooling.

Hydrothermal synthesis of Co-free NMA cathodes for high performance Li-ion batteries

Scalable and sustainable production of high voltage cathodes is required to meet the increasing demands for Li-ion batteries. Additionally, the anticipated scarcity of critical materials like cobalt necessitates demonstration of Co-free alternatives that can match the performance metrics of conventional cathodes. Herein, a hydrothermal synthesis route for production of a new class of high-capacity, cobalt-free cathode material, LiNi 0.9 Mn 0.05 Al 0.05 O 2 (NMA9055) for next-generation Li-ion batteries is reported. In this work, the synthesized cathode material shows high crystallinity and purity with monodispersed spherical morphology. Extensive electrochemical, structural, and post-mortem characterization of this novel NMA material is carried out. NMA-Li half cells show an initial discharge capacity of 200 mAh/g with a 96% capacity retention over 100 cycles when cycled between 3.0 and 4.4 V. On the other hand, NMA full cells with Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO) electrodes as the anode, show an initial discharge capacity of 186 mAh/g with 81% capacity retention over 200 cycles. Post-mortem structural and morphological characterization show that the NMA morphology and crystal structure do not degrade significantly over 200 charge/discharge cycles. This new class of cobalt free cathode material containing nickel, manganese and aluminum synthesized by an ammonia-free synthesis route is expected to provide a facile solution towards sustainable cathode production.
