Amorphous 1-D nanowires of calcium phosphate/pyrophosphate: A demonstration of oriented self-growth of amorphous minerals

Amorphous inorganic solids are traditionally isotropic, thus, it is believed that they only grow in a non-preferential way without the assistance of regulators, leading to the morphologies of nanospheres or irregular aggregates of nanoparticles. However, in the presence of (ortho)phosphate (Pi) and pyrophosphate ions (PPi) which have synergistic roles in biomineralization, the highly elongated amorphous nanowires (denoted ACPPNs) form in a regulator-free aqueous solution (without templates, additives, organics, etc). Based on thorough characterization and tracking of the formation process (e.g., Cryo-TEM, spherical aberration correction high resolution TEM, solid state NMR, high energy resolution monochromated STEM-EELS), the microstructure and its preferential growth behavior are elucidated. In ACPPNs, amorphous calcium orthophosphate and amorphous calcium pyrophosphate are distributed at separated but close sites. The ACPPNs grow via either the preferential attachment of ~2 nm nanoclusters in a 1-dimension way, or the transformation of bigger nanoparticles, indicating an inherent driving force-governed process. Here, we propose that the anisotropy of ACPPNs microstructure, which is corroborated experimentally, causes their oriented growth. This study proves that, unlike the conventional view, amorphous minerals can form via oriented growth without external regulation, demonstrating a novel insight into the structures and growth behaviors of amorphous minerals.

The influence of hydrothermal synthesis temperature on the electronic structure and luminescence property of Cr-doped ZnGa 2 O 4 nanoparticles

Cr-doped ZnGa 2 O 4 (CZGO) is a near-infrared-emitting material with long-lasting persistent luminescence. This unique property makes it a great candidate in optical imaging and sensing for various biomedical applications. Nanosized CZGO can be synthesized via a hydrothermal approach, but the reaction temperatures reported in existing literature vary from 120°C to 220°C, approaching the highest temperature allowed for a standard autoclave vessel. The reason for choosing a particular hydrothermal synthesis temperature has rarely been discussed, and it is unclear whether the resulting CZGO possess the same optical properties. This work compares CZGO nanoparticles synthesized at temperatures from the lowest reported 120°C and to as high as 220°C. We find that although all the synthesized CZGO are light emitting, they exhibit different luminescence intensities and respond differently to the change of excitation energy. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) analysis is employed to investigate the local chemical environment around Zn, Ga and Cr, respectively. We found synthesis temperature strongly influences the Ga species formed in these particles. The energy transfer mechanism is further elucidated using X-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL) in combination with element-specific XAFS. Two energy transfer paths are identified, which explains the different excitation energy dependencies of the observed photoluminescence.

Coordination environment tuning of nickel sites by oxyanions to optimize methanol electro-oxidation activity

To achieve zero-carbon economy, advanced anode catalysts are desirable for hydrogen production and biomass upgrading powered by renewable energy. Ni-based non-precious electrocatalysts are considered as potential candidates because of intrinsic redox attributes, but in-depth understanding and rational design of Ni site coordination still remain challenging. Here, we perform anodic electrochemical oxidation of Ni-metalloids (NiP x , NiS x , and NiSe x ) to in-situ construct different oxyanion-coordinated amorphous nickel oxyhydroxides (NiOOH-TO x ), among which NiOOH-PO x shows optimal local coordination environment and boosts electrocatalytic activity of Ni sites towards selective oxidation of methanol to formate. Experiments and theoretical results demonstrate that NiOOH-PO x possesses improved adsorption of OH* and methanol, and favors the formation of CH 3 O* intermediates. The coordinated phosphate oxyanions effectively tailor the d band center of Ni sites and increases Ni-O covalency, promoting the catalytic activity. This study provides additional insights into modulation of active-center coordination environment via oxyanions for organic molecules transformation.
