Moving beyond the Aerosol Climatology of WRF-Solar: A Case Study over the North China Plain

Numerical weather prediction (NWP), when accessible, is a crucial input to short-term solar power forecasting. WRF-Solar, the first NWP model specifically designed for solar energy applications, has shown promising predictive capability. Nevertheless, few attempts have been made to investigate its performance under high aerosol loading, which attenuates incoming radiation significantly. The North China Plain is a polluted region due to industrialization, which constitutes a proper testbed for such investigation. Here, in this paper, aerosol direct radiative effect (DRE) on three surface shortwave radiation components (i.e., global, beam, and diffuse) during five heavy pollution episodes is studied within the WRF-Solar framework. Results show that WRF-Solar overestimates instantaneous beam radiation up to 795.3 W m -2 when the aerosol DRE is not considered. Although such overestimation can be partially offset by an underestimation of the diffuse radiation of about 194.5 W m -2 , the overestimation of the global radiation still reaches 160.2 W m -2 . This undesirable bias can be reduced when WRF-Solar is powered by Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) aerosol forecasts, which then translates to accuracy improvements in photovoltaic (PV) power forecasts. This work also compares the forecast performance of the CAMS-powered WRF-Solar with that of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts model. Under high aerosol loading conditions, the irradiance forecast accuracy generated by WRF-Solar increased by 53.2% and the PV power forecast accuracy increased by 6.8%.

Spectral phase singularity and topological behavior in perfect absorption

Perfect absorbers, which can achieve total absorption of all incoming energy, have been extensively studied in the last decades for various important technologies in general wave systems. Here, we show that perfect absorption (PA) is generically associated with topological spectral phase singularity (SPS), carrying conserved and tunable quantized topological invariants in spectral space. The order of topological invariant $\tilde{v}$ depends on the number of degenerate outgoing channels. Two commonly studied absorbers, mirror-backed and all-dielectric structures, are reexamined from a topological perspective to reveal the generation, evolution, and annihilation of SPSs with $\tilde{v}$ = ±1 or even high orders (i.e., $\tilde{v}$ = ±2,±4). A strategy based on charge conservation of SPSs to design dual-band perfect absorbers has been established. Our findings establish the topological origin of the robust existence of PA. More broadly, in this letter, we highlight topology as the fundamental property of conventional scattering behaviors. Finally, this insight could lead to opportunities in applications such as biosensing, topological metasurfaces, and micro/nano thermal radiation.

Surface Brightening in Eastern and Central China Since the Implementation of the Clean Air Action in 2013: Causes and Implications

Surface brightening has been observed in China since 2005. However, it remains unclear whether the brightening has accelerated recently in response to the strictest ever air pollution control policies since 2013. By combining intensive surface and satellite observations, we find an unprecedented rapid increasing trend in surface solar radiation (SSR) of 0.70–1.16 W m-2 yr-1 over the eastern and central China for 2014–2019. Using a novel method to identify the relative contributions of aerosol and cloud radiative effects to the SSR trends, we find that the strongly declining aerosol radiative effect due to the strict air pollution controls is the main cause of the upward SSR trends; cloud variations should not be the main reason. Distinction exists in seasonal trends of SSR, with decreasing trends in winter and increasing trends in other seasons. Air pollution controls play an important role in regulating SSR, which has valuable implications for photovoltaic power generation.
