An extension of MacCormack's method for flows with higher-order equations and in different configurations

The numerical scheme for the computation of a shock discontinuity developed by MacCormack has been extended to solve a number of differential equations, including cases explicitly containing higher-order derivatives: (1) Korteweg-de Vries equation with a term of third-order derivative, (2) a system of nonlinear equations governing nonsteady one-dimensional plasma flow in cylindrical coordinate, (3) equations of solar wind. Comparisons with previous results are made, if available, to illustrate the advantages of the present method. The question of convergence of the numerical calculation is discussed.

A test of the comet hypothesis of the Tunguska Meteor Fall - Nature of the meteor 'thermal' explosion paradox

The hypothesis that a comet was responsible for the Tunguska Meteor Fall is rejected because the hypothesis does not seem to account for the intense terminal spherical shock. A porous meteoroid model is proposed, and an analysis indicates that an entity of this type might produce an aerodynamic heat flux large enough to account for the terminal meteor explosion. It is suggested that the presence of olivine and of highly irregular macrostructure in meteors might indicate the presence of some porosity. For a highly porous meteoroid, it is postulated that during entry into the atmosphere the aerodynamic heat transfer at its external or pore walls would become so intensified as to cause either complete ablation with popping or a solid-liquid-vapor phase transition accompanied by an explosion.

Towards a theory of stochastic vorticity-augmentation

A new hypothesis to account for the formation of tornadoes is presented. An elementary one-dimensional theory is formulated for vorticity transfer between an ambient sheared wind and a transverse penetrating jet. The theory points out the relevant quantities to be determined in describing the present stochastic mode of vorticity augmentation.

A wave model of near wakes

A new model for the near-wake studies is presented. It pertains to a tenuous plasma medium with negligible magnetic field effects. The wake-generating body moves at a mesothermal speed, i.e., intermediate between the thermal speeds of ions and electrons of the ambient plasma which is bithermal (Ti less than Te) and has a Debye length much smaller than the body size. The model is constructed by using the concept that the cavity left by a rapidly moving body acts as a generator of finite-amplitude ion acoustic waves which are excited by an initial discontinuity of plasma density at the leading edge of the cavity. This ionic wave motion, represented by fluid equations, is represented approximately by the time dependent one-dimensional Korteweg-de Vries equation. Numerical and analytic solutions are both given.

On ionospheric aerodynamics

This paper presents theoretical methods to determine the gas dynamic and the electrostatic effects due to the interaction caused by a rapidly moving body in the ionosphere. The principles of the methods are derived from the kinetic theory of collision-free plasma. It is shown that the collective behavior of the collision-free plasma makes it possible to use the fluid approach to treat the problems of ionospheric aerodynamics. Various solutions to the system of fluid and field equations that have direct bearing on the ionospheric aerodynamics are presented and discussed. Physical significances of the mathematical results are stressed. Some outstanding unsolved problems in ionospheric aerodynamics are elaborated and discussed.

On the field anomaly of near wakes in a collisionless plasma.

A variational approach is presented for determining the electric field induced by charge separation in the near wake of a large negatively charged body moving at mesothermal speeds in a tenuous plasma. It is shown that the presence of a potential well in the wake is due to the charge separation resulting from the unequal mass motions with which the ambient electrons and ions move into the wake.

Internal gravity wave-atmospheric wind interaction - A cause of clear air turbulence.

The interaction between an internal gravity wave (IGW) and a vertical wind shear is discussed as a possible cause in the production of clear air turbulence in the free atmosphere. It is shown that under certain typical condition the interaction of an IGW with a background wind shear near a critical level provides a mechanism for depositing sufficient momentum in certain regions of the atmosphere to significantly increase the local mean wind shear and to lead to the production of turbulence.

Interplanetary gas dynamics.

Observations of the interplanetary medium are considered together with the structure of the solar atmosphere and the kinetic properties of the interplanetary plasma. Methods of gas kinetics and continuum flows are examined, taking into account microscopic and macroscopic representations, the kinetic flow equations, the formal solution of the Vlasov equation, and the continuum flow equations. The collective particle behavior of that interplanetary gas is discussed along with the hydrodynamic coronal expansion, a wave-pump problem, the free expansion phenomenon, and a generalized free expansion problem.
