Opto-twistronic Hall effect in a three-dimensional spiral lattice

Studies of moire systems have elucidated the exquisite effect of quantum geometry on the electronic bands and their properties, leading to the discovery of new correlated phases. However, most experimental studies have been confined to a few layers in the 2D limit. The extension of twistronics to its 3D limit, where the twist is extended into the third dimension between adjacent layers, remains underexplored due to the challenges in precisely stacking layers. Here, in this study, we focus on 3D twistronics on a platform of self-assembled spiral superlattice of multilayered WS 2 . Our findings reveal an opto-twistronic Hall effect in the spiral superlattice. This mesoscopic response is an experimental manifestation of the noncommutative geometry that arises when translational symmetry is replaced by a non-symmorphic screw operation. We also discover signatures of altered laws of optical excitation, manifested as an unconventional photon momentum-lattice interaction owing to moire of moire modulations in the 3D twistronic system. Crucially, our findings mark the initial identification of higher-order quantum geometrical tensors in light-matter interactions. This breakthrough opens new avenues for designing quantum materials-based optical lattices with large nonlinearities, paving the way for the development of advanced quantum nanophotonic devices.

Observation of plaid-like spin splitting in a noncoplanar antiferromagnet

Spatial, momentum and energy separation of electronic spins in condensed matter systems guides the development of novel devices where spin-polarized current is generated and manipulated. Recent attention on a set of previously overlooked symmetry operations in magnetic materials leads to the emergence of a new type of spin splitting, enabling giant and momentum-dependent spin polarization of energy bands on selected antiferromagnets. Despite the ever-growing theoretical predictions, the direct spectroscopic proof of such spin splitting is still lacking. Here, we provide solid spectroscopic and computational evidence for the existence of such materials. In the noncoplanar antiferromagnet MnTe 2 , the in-plane components of spin are found to be antisymmetric about the high-symmetry planes of the Brillouin zone, comprising a plaid-like spin texture in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state. Such an unconventional spin pattern, further found to diminish at the high- temperature paramagnetic state, stems from the intrinsic AFM order instead of spin- orbit coupling (SOC). Furthermore, our finding demonstrates a new type of quadratic spin texture induced by time-reversal breaking, placing AFM spintronics on a firm basis and paving the way for studying exotic quantum phenomena in related materials.

Anisotropy of Electronic Spin Texture in the High-Temperature Cuprate Superconductor Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ

Seeking new order parameters and the related broken symmetry and studying their relationship with phase transition have been important topics in condensed matter physics. We report by using spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we confirm the helical spin texture caused by spin-layer locking in the nodal region in the cuprate superconductor Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ and discover the anisotropy of spin polarizations at nodes along Γ–X and Γ–Y directions. The breaking of C 4 rotational symmetry in electronic spin texture may give deeper insights into understanding the ground state of cuprate superconductors.

Balanced stochastic versus deterministic assembly processes benefit diverse yet uneven ecosystem functions in representative agroecosystems

Ecological assembly processes, by influencing community composition, determine ecosystem functions of microbiomes. However, debate remains on how stochastic versus deterministic assembly processes influence ecosystem functions such as carbon and nutrient cycling. Towards a better understanding, we investigated three types of agroecosystems (the upland, paddy, and flooded) that represent a gradient of stochastic versus deterministic assembly processes. Carbon and nutrient cycling multifunctionality, characterized by nine enzymes associated with soil carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous and sulfur cycling, was evaluated and then associated with microbial assembly processes and cooccurrence patterns of vital ecological groups. Our results suggest that strong deterministic processes favour microorganisms with convergent functions (as in the upland agroecosystem), while stochasticity-dominated processes lead to divergent functions (as in the flooded agroecosystem). To benefit agroecosystems services, we speculate that it is critical for a system to maintain balance between its stochastic and deterministic assembly processes (as in the paddy agroecosystem). By doing so, the system can preserve a diverse array of functional traits and also allow for particular traits to flourish. To further confirm this speculation, it is necessary to develop a systematic knowledge beyond merely characterizing general patterns towards the associations among community assembly, composition, and ecosystem functions.

Dynamic microbial assembly processes correspond to soil fertility in sustainable paddy agroecosystems

1. Microorganisms underpin the sustainability of agroecosystems, but we have a poor understanding of how the assembly processes that govern microbial community structure interact through time to maintain soil fertility. 2. Ancient rice paddies have a history of cultivation spanning hundreds or thousands of years and provide an ideal opportunity to explore relationships between community assembly processes and long-term agroecosystem sustainability. We used statistical null models to evaluate temporal patterns of bacterial community assembly processes across rice cultivation years and their associations with increases in soil fertility in paddy agroecosystems. 3. We found that stochasticity was a persistent force structuring paddy soil microbial communities, putatively due to frequent flooding that facilities dispersal. However, determinism gradually increased over centuries of agriculture and corresponded to increases in soil fertility. Accordingly, multifunctionality, calculated using enzymes catalyzing key soil functions in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous and sulfur cycling significantly increased along rice cultivation years. We therefore propose that balanced assembly processes preserve a diverse array of traits that can dominate under various circumstances (stochasticity) while allowing for traits relevant to soil fertility to be selected for by soil fertility (determinism), thus supporting multifunctionality that underlies sustainable agroecosystems. 4. In total, our results highlight that knowledge on temporal microbial assembly processes, community composition, and ecological function in context of soil fertility is key to understanding ecological mechanisms maintaining agroecosystems sustainability.

Long-Term Stochasticity Combines With Short-Term Variability in Assembly Processes to Underlie Rice Paddy Sustainability

Revealing temporal patterns of community assembly processes is important for understanding how microorganisms underlie the sustainability of agroecosystem. The ancient terraced rice paddies at Longji provide an ideal platform to study temporal dynamics of agroecosystem sustainability due to their chronosequential records of soil physicochemistry and well-archived microbial information along 630-year rice cultivation. We used statistical null models to evaluate microbial assembly processes along the soil chronosequences of Longji rice paddies through time. Stochastic and deterministic assembly processes jointly governed microbial community composition within successional eras (less than 250 years), and within-era determinism was mainly driven by soil fertility and redox conditions alone or in combination. Conversely, across successional eras (i.e., over 300 years), stochasticity linearly increased with increasing duration between eras and was eventually predominant for the whole 630 years. We suggest that the impact of stochasticity vs. determinism on assembly is timescale-dependent, and we propose that the importance of stochastic assembly of microbial community at longer timescales is due to the gradual changes in soil properties under long-term rice cultivation, which in turn contribute to the sustainability of paddy ecosystem by maintaining a diverse community of microorganisms with multi-functional traits. In total, our results indicate that knowledge on the timescales at which assembly processes govern microbial community composition is key to understanding the ecological mechanisms generating agroecosystem sustainability.
