In Situ Cyclized Polyacrylonitrile Coating: Key to Stabilizing Porous High-Entropy Oxide Anodes for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

High-entropy oxides (HEOs) composed of multiple metal elements have attracted great attention as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to the synergistic effects of various metal species. However, the practical applications of HEOs are still plagued by poor conductivity, unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and poor cycling stability. In this work, nanosized (FeCoNiCrMn) 3 O 4 HEO (NHEO) is prepared successfully by the NaCl-assisted mechanical ball-milling strategy. Novelly, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) is used as the binder and then in situ thermochemically cyclized to construct a cyclized PAN (cPAN) outer layer onto NHEO (NHEO-cPAN). The in situ formed cPAN coating not only improves the electrical conductivity, but also reinforces the structural and interfacial stability, and thereby, the resulted NHEO-cPAN electrode exhibits significantly enhanced rate and cyclic performance. Specifically, NHEO-PAN500 electrode delivers a high reversible capacity of 560 mAh g –1 at 5 A g –1 and a high-capacity retention of 83% over 800 cycles at 3 A g –1 . Furthermore, the structural evolution and electrochemical behavior of NHEO-PAN electrode during discharge/charge is systematically investigated by operando X-ray diffraction, in situ impedance spectroscopy and ex situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Therefore, this work provides new insights into the engineering of electrode and interphase for high-performance HEO electrode materials, potentially enlightening the practical applications of HEO-based LIBs.

Multifunctional nitrile additives for inducing pseudo-concentration gel-polymer electrolyte: Enabling stable high-voltage lithium metal batteries

High-voltage lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are promising for next-generation high-energy storage systems. Unfortunately, their implementation has been severely plagued by the interfacial instability between the high-voltage cathodes/lithium metal (LM) anodes and electrolytes. To tackle these challenges, a novel nitrile additive, 1,4-dicyanobenzene (DCB) (Synonyms: terephthalonitrile), is added to the in situ polymerized pentaerythritol tetraacrylate-based gel polymer electrolyte (GPE). The DCB additive, as demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally, plays a crucial role in altering the Li+ coordinated solvation structure within the GPE. This alteration leads to the formation of a pseudo-concentrated electrolyte with a tightly packed Li+ cluster, expanding the electrochemical stability window of the electrolyte. Moreover, the DCB-included GPE significantly improves its compatibility with both LM anode and high-voltage cathode, attributed to the modified solvation structure and the generated LiF-rich electrolyte/electrode interphases. Accordingly, the GPE enables stable cyclic performance of LMBs based on a 4.9 V LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 cathode at a low relative negative/positive ratio of 4, achieving a high reversible capacity of 123.8 mAh g -1 with a capacity retention of 87.7% over 500 cycles at 0.5 C. This work provides new insights into enhancing the cyclability of high-voltage LMBs via the synergistic effect of additives and GPE.

Lithiophilic CoF 2 @C hollow spheres towards spatial lithium deposition for stable lithium metal batteries

Lithium metal (LM) is a promising anode for next-generation batteries due to its high theoretical capacity and low electrode potential. Nonetheless, side reactions, volume change, and unwanted lithium dendrite growth seriously limit the practical application of LM. Herein, with the aid of a hard template approach, a novel lithiophilic CoF 2 -carbon hollow sphere (CoF 2 @C-HS) composite material is successfully prepared via a facile in-situ fluorination and etching strategy. The lithiophilic CoF 2 acts as nucleation sites to reduce nucleation overpotential as well as induces the spatial Li deposition and the formation of LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), and the hollow carbon matrix can enhance the electrical conductivity and offer free space for LM deposition. Theoretical simulations reveal that the synergistic effect of lithiophilic CoF 2 and hollow carbon matrix homogenizes the electric field distribution and Li + flux. Benefiting from these advantages, the CoF 2 @C-HS-modified copper substrate electrode delivers an enhanced Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 93.7% for 280 cycles at 1 mA cm –2 and 1 mA h cm –2 . The symmetrical cell using CoF 2 @C-HS can stably cycle more than 1800 h with a low voltage hysteresis of 11 mV at a current density of 0.5 mA cm –2 and an areal capacity of 0.5 mA h cm –2 . Moreover, the Li@CoF 2 @C-HS composite anode enables more than 300 stable cycles at 1 C with a capacity retention of 95% in LiFePO 4 -based full cell and 110 stable cycles at 1 C in LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811)-based high-voltage full cell. Finally, this work might shed a new light on designing lithiophilic hosts to spatially confine LM deposition, realizing dendrite-free LM anodes and the practical applications of LM batteries.

In-situ synthesis of porous metal fluoride@carbon composite via simultaneous etching/fluorination enabled superior Li storage performance

Transition metal fluorides as Li-free conversion-type cathode materials have high theoretical specific capacities, however, their preparation strategy, sluggish electrochemical kinetic and poor cyclability have impeded their wide adoption in lithium-ion batteries. Herein, a facile in-situ synthesis of porous metal-fluoride-carbon composites is accomplished via simultaneous polytetrafluorethylene-based hard template etching and metal fluorination. This not only facilitates fast electron transfer and lithium-ion diffusion kinetics, but also buffers severe volume fluctuation during lithiation/delithation and enables the formation of a uniform and thin Li 2 CO 3 /LiF-rich cathode-electrolyte interphase. Here, as a proof of concept, the as-prepared porous FeF 3 @C (p-FeF 3 @C) indeed exhibits a high specific capacity of 230 mAh g -1 at 0.1 C together with an excellent capacity retention of 92.5% at 1 C for 200-cycles. Moreover, the practicality of the strategy is demonstrated by the superb electrochemical performance of the full-cells coupled with pre-lithiated graphite anodes. Therefore, the proposed novel synthetic strategy will enlighten the future design of high-performance metal-fluoride-carbon composites with porous structure for energy storage applications.

Design of a multi-functional gel polymer electrolyte with a 3D compact stacked polymer micro-sphere matrix for high-performance lithium metal batteries

We report lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are considered as promising high energy density batteries. However, they still suffer from poor cyclability due to the instability of solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs) and Li dendrite issues. Herein, a novel 3D densely packed multifunctional crosslinked gel polymer electrolyte (PHGPE) has been synthesized by in situ copolymerization of pentaerythritol tetraacrylate and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate in a liquid electrolyte via a thermal initiation method. Due to intermolecular hydrogen bonding in the frameworks, the PHGPE exhibits a 3D compact-stacked and crosslinked micro-sphere structure, which benefits the construction of homogeneous Li + flux, enabling uniform Li plating/stripping and formation of robust SEIs onto the lithium electrode. Benefiting from the above advantages, symmetric Li cells in the PHGPE deliver excellent cyclabilities of 6000 h at a current density of 1 mA cm -2 (1 mA h cm -2 ) and 7700 h at 0.5 mA cm -2 (2 mA h cm -2 ). Moreover, the PHGPE has such a wide electrochemical window that it is compatible with both high-voltage LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 and sulfur cathodes to realize long cycle life. Additionally, a LiFePO 4 based pouch size LMB also presents promising performance. Therefore, this study of the PHGPE has opened a new avenue for high-performance LMBs with excellent versatility and practicality.
