Swelling characteristics of DNA polymerization gels

The development of biomolecular stimuli-responsive hydrogels is important for biomimetic structures, soft robots, tissue engineering, and drug delivery. DNA polymerization gels are a new class of soft materials composed of polymer gel backbones with DNA duplex crosslinks that can be swollen by sequential strand displacement using hairpin-shaped DNA strands. The extensive swelling can be tuned using physical parameters such as salt concentration and biomolecule design. Previously, DNA polymerization gels have been used to create shape-changing gel automata with a large design space and high programmability. Here we systematically investigate how the swelling response of DNA polymerization gels can be tuned by adjusting the design and concentration of DNA crosslinks in the hydrogels or DNA hairpin triggers, and the ionic strength of the solution in which swelling takes place. Finally, we also explore the effect hydrogel size and shape have on the swelling response. Tuning these variables can alter the swelling rate and extent across a broad range and provide a quantitative connection between biochemical reactions and macroscopic material behaviour.

Universal relation between doping content and normal-state resistance in gate voltage tuned ultrathin Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 + x flakes

We report gate voltage tunable ultra-thin high-T c cuprates supply a unique platform to investigate the electronic phase diagram and superconductor-insulator transition. One of the challenges in this field is the precise determination of the doping content in the underdoped non-superconducting region. Here we report the discovery of a universal relation between the doping content p and the normal-state resistance at a fixed temperature R(T f ), p = α + β ln[1/R(T f )], in the ultra-thin Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+x flakes. The in-depth analysis shows that the evolution of carrier scattering probability with doping content and the change of effective mass caused by superconductor-insulator transition are two key factors leading to this logarithmic relation. Based on our finding, the more precise electronic phase diagram can be established. In addition, the superconductor-insulator transition is verified to be a quantum phase transition using a finite size scaling analysis. The scaling exponent z v is found to have a close correlation with the disorder levels. The present result provides an important foundation to investigate the fascinating electronic states in the ultra-thin cuprates.

Hierarchical Distributed Optimal Power Flow of HV and MV Distribution Networks With Continuous and Discrete Devices

With large-scale distributed photovoltaics (PVs) being integrated into distribution networks (DNs), coordinated optimal power flow (OPF) of high voltage (HV) and medium voltage (MV) DNs should be investigated to optimally dispatch the distributed PVs and other network devices. Here, this paper presents a hierarchical distributed OPF method for HV and MV DNs with on-load tap changers, reactive power compensators, feeder switches and distributed PVs. A hierarchical master-slave control architecture is applied to implement coordinated OPF of two-layer DNs. The HV master problem and MV subproblems are transformed into mixed-integer convex problems respectively with second order cone programming and LinDistFlow approximation. Since there is no efficient distributed algorithm to solve such OPF models with integer subproblems, a novel distributed algorithm is proposed in this paper to efficiently solve the hierarchical coordinated OPF model with integer subproblems in a distributed manner. In the proposed algorithm, the coordinated OPF model is solved in a branch-and-bound framework, where in each branch node generalized Benders decomposition (GBD) algorithm is applied to decompose the coordinated OPF model into a master problem and relaxed subproblems and solves them iteratively to get optimal solution. The GBD optimal and feasible cutting planes generated in a branch node are proved to be valid for its descendants. Moreover, three acceleration techniques are introduced into the proposed algorithm to improve computational efficiency. Finally, the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method are verified via simulation tests in Jinzhai DNs of China.

Apparatus Measures Seebeck Coefficient And Resistivity

Electrical measurements made by four point probes, two of which double as temperature probes. Laboratory apparatus measures both Seebeck coefficients and electrical resistivities of candidate thermoelectric materials at temperatures from ambient to 1,300 K. Apparatus makes possible to take both measurements alternately and in rapid succession during same heating cycle, thereby reducing distortion.
