Steady motion of 80-nm-size skyrmions in a 100-nm-wide track

The current-driven movement of magnetic skyrmions along a nanostripe is essential for the advancement and functionality of a new category of spintronic devices resembling racetracks. Despite extensive research into skyrmion dynamics, experimental verification of current-induced motion of ultra-small skyrmions within an ultrathin nanostripe is still pending. Here, we unveil the motion of individual 80 nm-size skyrmions in an FeGe track with an ultrathin width of 100 nm. The skyrmions can move steadily along the track over a broad range of current densities by using controlled pulse durations of as low as 2 ns. The potential landscape, arising from the magnetic edge twists in such a geometrically confined system, introduces skyrmion inertia and ensures efficient motion with a vanishing skyrmion Hall angle. Our results showcase the steady motion of skyrmions in an ultrathin track, offering a practical pathway for implementing skyrmion-based spintronic devices.

Emergent topological quantum orbits in the charge density wave phase of kagome metal CsV 3 Sb 5

The recently discovered kagome materials AV 3 Sb 5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) attract intense research interest in intertwined topology, superconductivity, and charge density waves (CDW). Although the in-plane 2 × 2 CDW is well studied, its out-of-plane structural correlation with the Fermi surface properties is less understood. In this work, we advance the theoretical description of quantum oscillations and investigate the Fermi surface properties in the three-dimensional CDW phase of CsV 3 Sb 5 . We derived Fermi-energy-resolved and layer-resolved quantum orbits that agree quantitatively with recent experiments in the fundamental frequency, cyclotron mass, and topology. We reveal a complex Dirac nodal network that would lead to a π Berry phase of a quantum orbit in the spinless case. However, the phase shift of topological quantum orbits is contributed by the orbital moment and Zeeman effect besides the Berry phase in the presence of spin-orbital coupling (SOC). Therefore, we can observe topological quantum orbits with a π phase shift in otherwise trivial orbits without SOC, contrary to common perception. Our work reveals the rich topological nature of kagome materials and paves a path to resolve different topological origins of quantum orbits.

WI Fast Stats: a collection of web apps for the visualization and analysis of WI Fast Plants data

WI Fast Stats is an integrated animated web page which serves as a medium to a collection of R-developed web apps that provide Data Visualization and Data Analysis tools for WI Fast Plants data. Each web app corresponds to an educational unit linked to a specific WI Fast Plants webinar and it serves two main functions: 1) K-16 teachers attending the WI Fast Plants webinar will learn how to design Data Science exercises through the web app for their students and 2) students can use the web app independently to learn about visualization and analysis via the publicly available sample datasets and educational materials.

Geometrically stabilized skyrmionic vortex in FeGe tetrahedral nanoparticles

The concept of topology has dramatically expanded the research landscape of magnetism, leading to the discovery of numerous magnetic textures with intriguing topological properties. A magnetic skyrmion is an emergent topological magnetic texture with a string-like structure in three dimensions and a disk-like structure in one and two dimensions. Skyrmions in zero dimensions have remained elusive due to challenges from many competing orders. Here, by combining electron holography and micromagnetic simulations, we uncover the real-space magnetic configurations of a skyrmionic vortex structure confined in a B20-type FeGe tetrahedral nanoparticle. An isolated skyrmionic vortex forms at the ground state and this texture shows excellent robustness against temperature without applying a magnetic field. Furthermore, our findings shed light on zero-dimensional geometrical confinement as a route to engineer and manipulate individual skyrmionic metastructures.

Charge Density Waves and Electronic Properties of Superconducting Kagome Metals

We report that kagome metals AV 3 Sb 5 (A = K, Rb, and Cs) exhibit intriguing superconductivity below 0.9 ~ 2.5 K, a charge density wave (CDW) transition around 80 ~ 100 K, and $\mathbb{Z}$ 2 topological surface states. The nature of the CDW phase and its relation to superconductivity remains elusive. In this work, we investigate the electronic and structural properties of CDW by first-principles calculations. We reveal an inverse Star of David deformation as the 2 x 2 x 2 CDW ground state of the kagome lattice. The kagome lattice shows softening breathing-phonon modes, indicating the structural instability. However, electrons play an essential role in the CDW transition via Fermi surface nesting and van Hove singularity. The inverse Star of David structure agrees with recent experiments by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The CDW phase inherits the nontrivial $\mathbb{Z}$ 2 -type topological band structure. Further, we find that the electron-phonon coupling is too weak to account for the superconductivity T c in all three materials. It implies the existence of unconventional pairing of these kagome metals. Our results provide essential knowledge toward understanding the superconductivity and topology in kagome metals.

Synthetic antiferromagnet-based spin Josephson oscillator

Two easy-plane ferromagnetic layers, antiferromagnetically coupled through a thin nonmagnetic metal layer, form the magnetic analog of a Josephson junction. Additionally, a current driven spin chemical potential drives a 2π precession of the in-plane magnetization of each ferromagnet. The participation of the full magnetic moment in the 2π precession maximizes the giant magnetoresistance and the ac output power. The frequency can be continuously tuned by a dc bias. An applied ac bias results in a time-averaged magnetoresistance with Shapiro-like steps. The multistate mode-locking behavior exhibited by the Shapiro steps may be exploited for applications such as microwave detectors and neuromorphic computing. They may also serve as an experimental signature of spin superfluidity.

Three-Dimensional Dynamics of a Magnetic Hopfion Driven by Spin Transfer Torque

Magnetic hopfion is a three-dimensional (3D) topological soliton with novel spin structure that would enable exotic dynamics. Herein, we observe and research the current-driven 3D dynamics of a magnetic hopfion with a unit Hopf index in a frustrated magnet. Attributed to the spin Berry phase and symmetry of the hopfion, the phase space entangles multiple collective coordinates, thus the hopfion exhibits rich dynamics including longitudinal motion along the current direction, transverse motion perpendicular to the current direction, rotational motion, and dilation. Furthermore, the characteristics of hopfion dynamics is determined by the ratio between the nonadiabatic spin transfer torque parameter and the damping parameter. Such peculiar 3D dynamics of magnetic hopfion could shed light on understanding the universal physics of hopfions in different systems and boost the prosperous development of 3D spintronics.
