The mechanical behavior of metal-halide perovskites: Elasticity, plasticity, fracture, and creep

Wide ranging mechanical properties — elasticity, plasticity, fracture, and creep — most relevant to the mechanical reliability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are systematically investigated. High quality bulk single-crystals of the commonly studied metal-halide perovskites (MHPs) relevant to PSCs are fabricated and studied: CH 3 NH 3 PbBr 3 (MAPbBr 3 ) and CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 (MAPbI 3 ). The first direct measurement of MHP Young's modulus (E) using uniaxial compression reveals E <100> of 13.1 ± 1.3 and 10.6 ± 1.0 GPa for MAPbBr 3 and MAPbI 3 , respectively. Further, the Vickers micro-hardness H (100) of MAPbBr 3 and MAPbI 3 is 0.54±0.02 GPa and 0.76±0.05 GPa, respectively. The Vickers micro-indentation fracture toughness K IC of MAPbBr 3 and MAPbI 3 is estimated at 0.20±0.03 MPa∙m 0.5 and 0.18±0.03 MPa∙m 0.5 , respectively. The stress-exponent, n, extracted from nanoindentation creep data is ~8 and ~10 for MAPbBr 3 and MAPbI 3 , respectively. The trends in these properties are discussed. These properties are best estimates and are recommended for use in future mechanical behavior and reliability analyses of MHPs and PSCs.

Nucleation-controlled growth of superior lead-free perovskite Cs 3 Bi 2 I 9 single-crystals for high-performance X-ray detection

The organic-inorganic hybrid lead halide perovskites have emerged as a series of star materials for solar cells, lasers and detectors. However, the issues raised by the toxic lead element and marginal stability due to the volatile organic components have severely limited their potential applications. In this work, we develop a nucleation-controlled solution method to grow large size high-quality Cs 3 Bi 2 I 9 perovskite single crystals (PSCs). Using the technique, we harvest some centimeter-sized single crystals and achieved high device performance. We find that X-ray detectors based on PSCs exhibit high sensitivity of 1652.3 μC Gy air -1 cm -2 and very low detectable dose rate of 130 nGy air s -1 , both desired in medical diagnostics. In addition, its outstanding thermal stability inspires us to develop a high temperature X-ray detector with stable response at up to 100 °C. Furthermore, PSCs exhibit high X-ray imaging capability thanks to its negligible signal drifting and extremely high stability.

Comparative Studies of Optoelectrical Properties of Prominent PV Materials: Halide Perovskite, CdTe, and GaAs

We compare three representative high performance PV materials: halide perovskite MAPbI3, CdTe, and GaAs, in terms of photoluminescence (PL) efficiency, PL lineshape, carrier diffusion, and surface recombination and passivation, over multiple orders of photo-excitation density or carrier density appropriate for different applications. An analytic model is used to describe the excitation density dependence of PL intensity and extract the internal PL efficiency and multiple pertinent recombination parameters. A PL imaging technique is used to obtain carrier diffusion length without using a PL quencher, thus, free of unintended influence beyond pure diffusion. Our results show that perovskite samples tend to exhibit lower Shockley-Read-Hall (SRH) recombination rate in both bulk and surface, thus higher PL efficiency than the inorganic counterparts, particularly under low excitation density, even with no or preliminary surface passivation. PL lineshape and diffusion analysis indicate that there is considerable structural disordering in the perovskite materials, and thus photo-generated carriers are not in global thermal equilibrium, which in turn suppresses the nonradiative recombination. This study suggests that relatively low point-defect density, less detrimental surface recombination, and moderate structural disordering contribute to the high PV efficiency in the perovskite. This comparative photovoltaics study provides more insights into the fundamental material science and the search for optimal device designs by learning from different technologies.
