Multipartite entanglement in two-dimensional chiral topological liquids

The multipartite entanglement structure for the ground states of two-dimensional (2D) topological phases is an interesting albeit not well-understood question. Utilizing the bulk-boundary correspondence, the calculation of tripartite entanglement in 2D topological phases can be reduced to that of the vertex state, defined by the boundary conditions at the interfaces between spatial regions. In this paper, we use the conformal interface technique to calculate entanglement measures in the vertex state, which include area-law terms, corner contributions, and topological pieces, and a possible additional order-one contribution. Furthermore, this explains our previous observation of the Markov gap ℎ = $\frac{c}{3}$ ⁢ln⁡2 in the three-vertex state, and generalizes this result to the p-vertex state, general rational conformal field theories, and more choices of subsystems. Finally, we support our prediction by numerical evidence, finding precise agreement.

Gauging anomalous unitary operators

Boundary theories of static bulk topological phases of matter are obstructed in the sense that they cannot be realized on their own as isolated systems. The obstruction can be quantified/characterized by quantum anomalies, in particular when there is a global symmetry. Similarly, topological Floquet evolutions can realize obstructed unitary operators at their boundaries. In this paper, we discuss the characterization of such obstructions by using quantum anomalies. As a particular example, here we discuss time-reversal symmetric boundary unitary operators in one and two spatial dimensions, where the anomaly emerges as we gauge the so-called Kubo-Martin-Schwinger (KMS) symmetry. We also discuss mixed anomalies between particle number conserving U(1) symmetry and discrete symmetries, such as C and CP, for unitary operators in odd spatial dimensions that can be realized at the boundaries of topological Floquet systems in even spatial dimensions.

Multi defect detection and analysis of electron microscopy images with deep learning

Electron microscopy is widely used to explore defects in crystal structures, but human detecting of defects is often time-consuming, error-prone, and unreliable, and is not scalable to large numbers of images or real-time analysis. In this work, we discuss the application of machine learning approaches to find the location and geometry of different defect clusters in irradiated steels. We show that a deep learning based Faster R-CNN analysis system has a performance comparable to human analysis with relatively small training data sets. Furthermore, this study proves the promising ability to apply deep learning to assist the development of automated microscopy data analysis even when multiple features are present and paves the way for fast, scalable, and reliable analysis systems for massive amounts of modern electron microscopy data.
