Model Predictive Control-Based Dual-Mode Operation of an Energy-Stored Quasi-Z-Source Photovoltaic Power System

The energy-stored quasi-Z-source inverter (ES-qZSI) has attracted much attention for photovoltaic (PV) power generations, due to its capability to stabilize the PV power fluctuations with simple structure and other advantages of Z-source inverter. The improved dual-mode (DM) ES-qZSI is able to support all-weather operation even at night or cloudy days when PV power is extremely low. However, the traditional proportional–integral (PI) based control suffers from complicated controller design and poor dynamic response during mode transition, due to two sets of PI control required for the daytime and night operation modes. In order to overcome that, here in this article, we propose a model predictive control strategy for the DM-ES-qZSI PV power system. The system predictive models in both day and night operating modes are derived. The control strategy is disclosed to ensure high performance of the system, through calling the predictive models and defined cost functions of the two modes within a single control loop. Simulation and experiment are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

Four-Switch Buck-Boost Converter Based on Model Predictive Control with Smooth Mode Transition Capability

Four-switch buck-boost converter supports both voltage step-up and step-down functionalities, but it suffers from mode transfer challenge that would need reliable mode detection when designed to operate in multi different modes. In this paper, a novel control method based on model predictive current control is proposed for such converter with inherent smooth mode transfer capability without extra design on mode detection and transfer scheme. Modulator and mode detection are replaced by an optimization process through cost function. This largely simplifies the design and makes it easily implemented. Therefore, seamless transfer between buck and boost modes is achieved with many other system level benefits. Simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the effectiveness of proposed method for the four-switch buck-boost converter.

Highly Catalytically Active High-spin Single-atom Iron Catalyst Supported by Catechol-containing Microporous 2D Polymer

Traditionally, Fe-SACs are prepared through energy-intense processes, which often lead to the loss of precision in structural features from the starting substrates and impeding rational design. In this work, we have described the synthesis of a unique catechol-containing porous polymer with designed features in the substrates maintained, affording atomically dispersed iron catalyst (Fe-SAC) through treatment of ferrous chloride (FeCl 2 ). An aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (AC-STEM) and synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) were employed to shed light on the local coordination geometry of the atomically dispersed iron catalyst. The resulting Fe-SAC exhibits excellent catalytic performance in reduction of nitroaromatics with highest molar K app among all Fe based catalysts.

Duty-Cycle Predictive Control of Quasi-Z-Source Modular Cascaded Converter Based Photovoltaic Power System

A duty-cycle predictive control is proposed for dc grid integration of front-end isolated quasi-Z-source modular cascaded converter (qZS-MCC) photovoltaic (PV) power system. The post-stage qZS half-bridge dc-dc converter deals with PV maximum power point tracking, dc grid integration, and dc-link voltage balance; whereas, the front-end isolation converters operate at a constant duty cycle of 50%. Thus, it saves control hardware resources while overcoming challenges from PV-panel voltage variations and dc-bus voltage limit. The proposed control uses the derived circuit model to predict the global active-state duty cycle for grid-connected current control and predict the shoot-through duty cycles for dc-link voltage balance, achieving a fast and accurate tracking target. The proposed control method has advantages of: i) eliminating weighting factors that exist in conventional model predictive control (MPC), ii) no sophisticated loop parameters design that exists in proportional-integral (PI) control, iii) operating at constant switching frequency that is different from the conventional MPC with variable switching frequency. Simulation and experimental tests are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control method and compare with the PI-based control system.
