Overview of recent experimental results on the EAST Tokamak

Since the last IAEA-FEC in 2021, significant progress on the development of long pulse steady state scenario and its related key physics and technologies have been achieved, including the reproducible 403 s long-pulse steady-state H-mode plasma with pure radio frequency (RF) power heating. A thousand-second time scale (~1056 s) fully non-inductive plasma with high injected energy up to 1.73 GJ has also been achieved. The EAST operational regime of high β P has been significantly extended (H 98y2 > 1.3, β P ~ 4.0, β N ~ 2.4 and n e /n GW ~ 1.0) using RF and neutral beam injection (NBI). The full edge localized mode suppression using the n = 4 resonant magnetic perturbations has been achieved in ITER-like standard type-I ELMy H-mode plasmas with q 95 ≈ 3.1 on EAST, extrapolating favorably to the ITER baseline scenario. The sustained large ELM control and stable partial detachment have been achieved with Ne seeding. The underlying physics of plasma-beta effect for error field penetration, where toroidal effect dominates, is disclosed by comparing the results in cylindrical theory and MARS-Q simulation in EAST. Breakdown and plasma initiation at low toroidal electric fields (<0.3 V m -1 ) with EC pre-ionization is developed. A beneficial role on the lower hybrid wave injection to control the tungsten concentration in the NBI discharge is observed for the first time in EAST suggesting a potential way toward steady-state H-mode NBI operation.

Highly Perfluorinated Covalent Triazine Frameworks Derived from a Low-Temperature Ionothermal Approach Towards Enhanced CO 2 Electroreduction

Perfluorinated covalent triazine frameworks (F-CTFs) have shown unique features and attractive performance in separation and catalysis. However, state-of-art F-CTFs synthesized via the ZnCl 2 -promoted procedure have quite low fluorine contents due to C-F bond cleavage induced by chloride (a Lewis base) and the harsh conditions deployed (400-700 °C). Fabricating F-CTFs with high fluorine contents (> 30 wt%) remains challenging. Herein, we present a low-temperature ionothermal approach (275 °C) to prepare F-CTFs, which is achieved via polymerization of tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile (TFPN) over the Lewis superacids, e.g., zinc triflimide [Zn(NTf 2 ) 2 ] without side reactions. With low catalyst loading (equimolar), F-CTFs are afforded with high fluorine content (31 wt%), surface area up to 367 m 2 g -1 , and micropores around 1.1 nm. The highly hydrophobic F-CTF-1 exhibits good capability to boost electroreduction of CO 2 to CO, with faradaic efficiency of 95.7% at –0.8 V and high current density (–141 mA cm -2 ) surpassing most of the metal-free electrocatalysts.

A large accessory protein interactome is rewired across environments

To characterize how protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks change, we quantified the relative PPI abundance of 1.6 million protein pairs in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae across 9 growth conditions, with replication, for a total of 44 million measurements. Our multi-condition screen identified 13,764 pairwise PPIs, a 3-fold increase over PPIs identified in one condition. A few 'immutable' PPIs are present across all conditions, while most 'mutable' PPIs are rarely observed. Immutable PPIs aggregate into highly connected 'core' network modules, with most network remodeling occurring within a loosely connected 'accessory' module. Mutable PPIs are less likely to co-express, co-localize, and be explained by simple mass action kinetics, and more likely to contain proteins with intrinsically disordered regions, implying that environment-dependent association and binding is critical to cellular adaptation. Our results show that protein interactomes are larger than previously thought and contain highly dynamic regions that reorganize to drive or respond to cellular changes.
