Particle Dynamics in a Diblock-Copolymer-Based Dodecagonal Quasicrystal and Its Periodic Approximant by X-Ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy

Temperature-dependent X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) measurements are reported for a binary diblock copolymer blend that self-assembles into an aperiodic dodecagonal quasicrystal (DDQC) and a periodic Frank-Kasper σ phase approximant. The measured structural relaxation times are Bragg scattering wavevector-independent and are five times faster in the DDQC than the σ phase, with minimal temperature dependence. Further, the underlying dynamical relaxations are ascribed to differences in particle motion at the grain boundaries within each of these tetrahedrally close-packed assemblies. These results identify unprecedented particle dynamics measurements of tetrahedrally-coordinated micellar block polymers, thus expanding the application of XPCS to ordered soft materials.

Molecular homing and retention of muscle membrane stabilizing copolymers by non-invasive optical imaging in vivo

First-in-class membrane stabilizer Poloxamer 188 (P188) has been shown to confer membrane protection in an extensive range of clinical conditions; however, elements of the systemic distribution and localization of P188 at the organ, tissue, and muscle fiber levels in vivo have not yet been elucidated. Here we used non-invasive fluorescence imaging to directly visualize and track the distribution and localization of P188 in vivo. The results demonstrated that the Alx647 probe did not alter the fundamental properties of P188 to protect biological membranes. Distribution kinetics in mdx mice demonstrated that Alx647 did not interface with muscle membranes and had fast clearance kinetics. In contrast, the distribution kinetics for P188-Alx647 was significantly slower, indicating a dramatic depot and retention effect of P188. Results further demonstrated the significant retention of P188-Alx647 in the skeletal muscle of mdx mice, showing a significant genotype effect with a higher fluorescence signal in the mdx muscles over BL10 mice. High-resolution optical imaging provided direct evidence of P188 surrounding the sarcolemma of skeletal and cardiac muscle cells. Taken together, these findings provide direct evidence of muscle-disease-dependent molecular homing and retention of synthetic copolymers in striated muscles thereby facilitating advanced studies of copolymer-membrane association in health and disease.

Effect of poly[oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate] side chain length on the brush swelling behavior in A/B/A–B ternary blends with polystyrene

The phase behavior of ternary blends composed of two homopolymers (A, B) and their corresponding diblock copolymer (A–B) has been widely studied, with emphasis on the volumetrically symmetric isopleth and the formation of bicontinuous microemulsions. However, almost all the previous studies employed linear polymers, and little is known about the impact of polymer architecture on the phase behavior of such ternary blends. Here, in this work, we report the self-assembly of three sets of ternary blends of polystyrene (PS) and poly[oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate] (POEGMA n ), with different lengths of oligo(ethylene glycol) side chains n. Small-angle X-ray scattering was used to probe the phase behavior at different compositions and temperatures. The order-to-disorder transition temperature was found to be impacted by the side chain length. It was also observed that longer side chains lead to poorer miscibility of homopolymers in the corresponding block, resulting in a more “dry-brush” like swelling behavior.

Self-Assembly of Partially Charged Diblock Copolymer-Homopolymer Ternary Blends

Ternary blends comprising of a diblock copolymer and the corresponding homopolymers provide ready access to a variety of morphologies, but the impact of charge on their phase behavior has not been studied extensively. Here, three partially charged ternary blends consisting of symmetric poly[(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate-co-oligo(ethylene glycol) propyl sodium sulfonate methacrylate)] (POEGMA#), polystyrene (PS), and POEGMA#-PS with different charge fractions were prepared, where # denotes the mole fraction of charged monomers in the POEGMA chain. Here, the phase behavior was systematically studied using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and isothermal phase diagrams at 120 °C were constructed. The resulting isothermal planes contain a wide lamellar (LAM) phase window with a slight deviation from symmetry for ion-containing ternary blends, due to the homopolymer size difference. Given the absence of any significant change in the phase diagrams as the charge fraction increases, the role of charge is primarily to increase the segregation strength in the ternary system, as in the case of partially charged diblock polymers. In addition, examination of the increase in domain size along the volumetrically symmetric isopleth reveals a “dry-brush” like swelling behavior of homopolymers in all three blends, presumably due to the space-filling nature of the oligomeric ethylene glycol side chains on POEGMA.

Nondestructive Photo-Cross-Linking of Microphase-Separated Diblock Polymers through Coumarin Dimerization

The effect of long-wavelength ultraviolet photocrosslinking on microphase-separated coumarin-containing block polymers was studied by photo-rheometry and small-angle X-ray scattering. This model system consisted of three photocrosslinkable diblock polymers of poly(methoxyethyl acrylate)-b-poly(hexyl methacrylate-co-coumarin methacrylate) with different volume fractions of the crosslinkable coumarin-containing block, which microphase separated into lamellar and cylindrical morphologies. All polymers stiffened upon exposure to 365 nm light, with much greater relative increases in moduli recorded for lamellae-forming polymers (ca. 3200% increase) compared to the cylinder-forming polymer (ca. 550% increase). Disordering transitions that were evident in uncrosslinked samples were no longer observed after crosslinking in the ordered state, and domain sizes were found to remain stable to heating. The photocrosslinking reaction only proceeded under active irradiation, indicating a high degree of spatiotemporal control over curing in this system. Finally, at constant concentration of couamarin within the crosslinkable block, the cure rate was largely independent of polymer composition, suggesting a constant local concentration of coumarin moieties within the segregated crosslinkable domains. Lastly, these findings establish a set of specific structure-property relationships governing the phase-selective photocrosslinking of diblock polymers that can guide the design of robust nanostructured materials.
