Phase Noise in Photonic Phased-Array Antenna Systems

The total noise of a phased-array antenna system employing a photonic feed network is analyzed using a model for the individual component noise including both additive and multiplicative equivalent noise generators.

Photonic Phased-Array Antenna Systems

Ultrastable Multigigahertz Photonic Oscillator

Novel photonic oscillator developed to serve as ultrastable source of microwave and millimeter-wave signals. In system, oscillations generated photonically, then converted to electronic form. Includes self-mode-locked semiconductor laser producing stream of pulses, detected and fed back to laser as input. System also includes fiber-optic-delay-line discriminator, which detects fluctuations of self-mode-locking frequency and generates error signal used in negative-feedback loop to stabilize pulse-repetition frequency.

Layout Of Antennas And Cables In A Large Array

Layout devised to minimize total land area occupied by large phased array of antennas and to minimize total length of cables in array. In original intended application, array expanded version of array of paraboloidal-dish microwave communication antennas of Deep Space Network. Layout also advantageous for other phased arrays of antennas and antenna elements, including notably printed-circuit microwave antenna arrays.

Fiber-Optic Discriminator Stabilizes Microwave Oscillator

New fiber-optic delay line discriminator enables stabilization of oscillators directly at microwave output frequency, eliminating need for frequency multiplication. Discriminator is wide-band device, capable of stabilizing outputs of frequency-agile microwave sources over multigigahertz tuning ranges. Use of advanced fiber-optic delay line with wider bandwidth and low noise predicted to yield corresponding improvements in phase-noise performance.

High-Dynamic-Range Fiber-Optic Link For Microwave Signals

Ultrastable fiber-optic communications system transmits microwave signals between antenna sites of Deep Space Network (DSN) and central processing station several kilometers away. Permits relocation of critical components from front-end areas of DSN antennas to central location, permitting radio-frequency (RF) antenna arraying, improving DSN flexibility, maintainability, and system performance. Also useful in commercial analog and digital communications.
