Inexpensive Bolt-Load Gage

"Built-in" gage determines whether large bolt or stud has been torqued to desired load and provides for continuous inspection to ensure proper load is being maintained. Gage detects longitudinal stress/strain bolt; requires no electronic or sonic test equipment.

The long duration exposure facility structural interface

The development of an efficient structural interface between the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) and the space shuttle orbiter is discussed. Thermal gradients and manufacturing tolerances restrict the number of retention points in the shuttle to four with no more than three in one plane. Loads during the powered exit, high drag reentry, and landing are also critical factors in the location of retention points. A LDEF design is described that meets all requirements while avoiding the structural weight penalties associated with an asymmetrical arrangement. The ground handling and assembly problems are resolved in an economical and effective manner.

Interlocking wedge joint is easily assembled

Wedge joint links structural members in manual, remote, or automated assemblies. Joint is simple enough to be assembled by undersea divers, workers in nuclear reactors, and other wearing gloves or bulky clothing. Combination of wedging angles on parts overcomes structural misalinements and forces assembly into true position as locking sleeve moves into place. Joint transmits tension, compression, bending moments and torsion and is inherently insensitive to thermal excursions, vibration, and machining tolerance buildup.

Powered wheel for aircraft

Single integral unit includes motor, gearbox, and clutch. Device has two-speed capability, fits within aerodynamic contours of aircraft, operates with onboard power source, does not interfere with normal landing gear functions, reduces use of regular brakes in congested areas, and provides locomotion and supplementary braking capability.

Powered wheels for aircraft

Engineering details, project status, system design and specifications, and test results are presented on a powered-wheel drive system based on the Dynavector rotary actuator. The design and operation of the Dynavector system (with positive displacement very-low-inertia nonrotating vane motor) are reviewed. Feasibility studies, contract data, and findings of braking tests are described. Exploded diagrams of Dynavector details are displayed. Success in using powered wheels in lieu of aircraft main engines for on-ground movements should bring benefits in energy conservation, noise abatement, reduced pollution, and alleviated congestion in the terminal area.

Exercise support for therapy

Constant-value weight-relieving apparatus, which moves on rollers on overhead track, supports weight of walking, stooping, squatting, or standing patient with combination of multiple pulleys and spring clusters. Individually preselected support force is constant for all movements.

Reducing flow requirements of fluid actuators

Method reduces volumetric rate of hydraulic fluid or air to drive actuator at high speed. Method can be used with any positive displacement actuator with multiple chambers.
