What can data science tell us about finding new superconductors?

Can data science guide researchers toward understanding superconductivity or discover new superconductors? We examine this question in light of a study in this issue of Patterns by Liu et al., who find that the superconducting transition temperature and certain computed energy intervals of the valence band are correlated.

Determining Multi-Component Phase Diagrams with Desired Characteristics Using Active Learning

Herein, we demonstrate how to predict and experimentally validate phase diagrams for multi-component systems from a high-dimensional virtual space of all possible phase diagrams involving several elements based on small existing experimental data. The experimental data for bulk phases for known systems represents a sampling from this space, and screening the space allows multi-component phase diagrams with given design criteria to be built. This approach uses machine learning methods to predict phase diagrams and Bayesian experimental design to minimize experiments for refinement and validation, all within an active learning loop. The approach is proven by predicting and synthesizing the ferroelectric ceramic system (1-ω)(Ba 0.61 Ca 0.28 Sr 0.11 TiO 3 )-ω(BaTi 0.888 Zr 0.0616 Sn 0.0028 Hf 0.0476 O 3 ) with a relatively high transition temperature and triple point, as well as the NiTi-based pseudo-binary phase diagram (1-ω)(Ti 0.309 Ni 0.485 Hf 0.20 Zr 0.006 )-ω(Ti 0.309 Ni 0.485 Hf 0.07 Zr 0.068 Nb 0.068 ) designed for high transition temperature (ω ≤ 1). Each phase diagram is validated and optimized through only three new experiments. The complexity of these compounds is beyond the reach of today’s computational methods.

Enhanced magnetocaloric performance in manganite bilayers

Bilayer films of La 0.8 Sr 0.2 MnO 3 and La 0.7 Ca 0.3 MnO 3 with different layer thicknesses and stacking sequences were synthesized via pulsed laser deposition. The magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effects were systematically investigated. We found that the phase transition associated with the layers tends to merge together at an optimal thickness and a stacking sequence. The operating temperature span of the entropy change broadens at the expense of its magnitude, leading to an enhancement of the refrigerant capacity by over 40%. The optimized bilayer film possesses a refrigerant capacity of ~6.0J/kg, compared to a value of ~4.2J/kg for the single-phase films. The phase transition broadening induced by epitaxial strain is responsible for the enhanced window of operating temperature as well as refrigerant capacity. Finally, the design principle developed here may be applied to ferroelastic and ferroelectric materials to enhance elastocaloric and electrocaloric effects.

Needle-Like Ferroelastic Domains in Individual Ferroelectric Nanoparticles

Superior structural, physical and electronic properties make ferroelectric nanocrystals essential in enabling a range of next-generation devices. Ferroelectric responses are determined by crystal structure and domain morphology. The ability to reversibly displace, create and annihilate elastic domains is critical to device applications. Whereas electric-field control has been demonstrated for ferroelectric 180° surface domain walls and vortices, similar control of ferroelastic domains and domain boundaries within individual nanocrystals remains challenging. Using controlled external compressive and tensile axial stress, deterministic and reversible control of highly mobile ferroelastic domains and axial polarization in three dimensions is demonstrated in this study. While many studies exist on ferroelastic domains in thin films and bulk, little is known about ferroelastic interactions at the single nanoparticle level, especially involving domain boundaries. Through combining Bragg coherent X-ray diffractive imaging and Landau theory, strain gradients in individual BaTiO3 nanocrystals are shown to stabilize needle-like ferroelastic twin domains. These domains are highly labile under applied axial stress, producing a locally enhanced electric polarization mediated by a ferroelectric phase transition. The efficacy of Bragg coherent X-ray diffractive imaging in studying in operando domains in three-dimensions is demonstrated, while synergy with theory provides a paradigm for domain boundary engineering and potential for nanoscale functional devices.
