Precision Synthesis of Conjugated Polymer Films by Surface-Confined Stepwise Sonogashira Cross-Coupling

Thin films of poly(arylene ethynylene)-conjugated polymers, including low-energy-gap donor–acceptor polymers, can be prepared via stepwise polymerization utilizing surface-confined Sonogashira cross-coupling. This robust and efficient polymerization protocol yields conjugated polymers with a precise molecular structure and with nanometer-level control of the organization and the uniform alignment of the macromolecular chains in the densely packed film. In addition to high stability and predictable and well-defined molecular organization and morphology, the surface-confined conjugated polymer chains experience significant interchain electronic interactions, resulting in dominating intermolecular π-electron delocalization which is primarily responsible for the electronic and spectroscopic properties of polymer films. The fluorescent films demonstrate remarkable performance in chemosensing applications, showing a turn-off fluorescent response on the sub-ppt (part per trillion) level of nitroaromatic explosives in water. This unique sensitivity is likely related to the enhanced exciton mobility in the uniformly aligned and structurally monodisperse polymer films.

A bioinspired cobalt catalyst based on a tripodal imidazole/pyridine platform capable of water reduction and oxidation

The prototypical drug carrier [Co II (L 1 )Cl]PF 6 (1), where L 1 is a tripodal amine bound to pyridine and methyl-imidazoles, had its electrocatalytic water splitting activity studied under different pH conditions. This species contains a high-spin 3d 7 Co II metal center, and is capable of generating both H 2 from water reduction and O 2 from water oxidation. Turnover numbers reach 390 after 3 h for water reduction. Initial water oxidation activity is molecular, with TONs of 71 at pH 7 and 103 at pH 11.5. The results reveal that species 1 can undergo several redox transformations, including reduction to the 3d 8 Co I species that precedes a LS 3d 6 hydride for water reduction, as well as nominal Co IV $=$O and Co III -OOH species required for water oxidation. Finally, post-catalytic analyses confirm the molecular nature of reduction and support initial molecular activity for oxidation.

Broadband Tunable Mid-infrared Plasmon Resonances in Cadmium Oxide Nanocrystals Induced by Size-Dependent Nonstoichiometry

A central theme of nanocrystal (NC) research involves synthesis of dimension-controlled NCs and study of size-dependent scaling laws governing their optical, electrical, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties. In this paper, we describe the synthesis of monodisperse CdO NCs that exhibit high quality-factor (up to 5.5) mid-infrared (MIR) localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) and elucidate the inverse scaling relationship between carrier concentration and NC size. The LSPR wavelength is readily tunable between 2.4 and similar to 6.0 μm by controlling the size of CdO NCs. Structural and spectroscopic characterization provide strong evidence that free electrons primarily originate from self-doping due to NC surface-induced nonstoichiometry. The ability to probe and to control NC stoichiometry and intrinsic defects will pave the way toward predictive synthesis of doped NCs with desirable LSPR characteristics.
