A Method for Predicting Lift Increments Due to Flap Deflection at Low Angles of Attack in Incompressible Flow

A method is presented for estimating the lift due to flap deflection at low angles of attack in incompressible flow. In this method provision is made for the use of incremental section-lift data for estimating the effectiveness of high-lift flaps. The method is applicable to swept wings of any aspect ratio or taper ratio. The present method differs from other current methods mainly in its ease of application and its more general application. Also included is a simplified method of estimating the lift-curve slope throughout the subsonic speed range.

Effects of sweep on controls

An analysis of the principal results of recent control-surface research pertinent to transonic flight has been made. An indication of the nature of the changes in control-surface characteristics above the critical speed of the wing and a preliminary design procedure for estimating the effectiveness of flap-type controls on swept wings are presented.

Pressure distribution over an NACA 23012 airfoil with a fixed slot and a slotted flap

Report presents the results of a pressure-distribution investigation conducted in the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory 7 by 10-foot wind tunnel to determine the air loads on an NACA 23012 airfoil in combination with a fixed leading-edge slot and a slotted flap. Pressures were measured over the upper and lower surfaces of the component parts of the combination for several angles of attack and at several flap settings. The data, presented as pressure diagrams and graphs of section coefficients, are applicable to rib, slat, and flap designs for the combination.
