Dehydration-Driven Ion Aggregation and the Onset of Gelation in ZnCl2 Solution

A minimal model of ionic aggregation in concentrated ZnCl2 is developed, guided by molecular dynamics simulations with a machine-learned potential. It explicitly incorporates solvent-site depletion, correlated chloride binding, and allows for loops within Zn–Cl clusters. Dehydration drives two coordination-controlled structural changes: a crossover at Z=2 from predominantly isolated Zn-containing species to Cl-bridged clusters and the onset of gelation near Z≈3. The model reproduces the concentration-dependent trends observed in the molecular dynamics simulations with two fitted parameters, while the cluster-size distribution at the highest concentration is consistent with three-dimensional percolation scaling over the accessible range of cluster sizes.

Dispersion kinks from electronic correlations in an unconventional iron-based superconductor

The attractive interaction in conventional BCS superconductors is provided by a bosonic mode. However, the pairing glue of most unconventional superconductors is unknown. The effect of electron-boson coupling is therefore extensively studied in these materials. A key signature are dispersion kinks that can be observed in the spectral function as abrupt changes in velocity and lifetime of quasiparticles. Here, we show the existence of two kinks in the unconventional iron-based superconductor RbFe 2 As 2 using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and dynami- cal mean field theory (DMFT). In addition, we observe the formation of a Hubbard band multiplet due to the combination of Coulomb interaction and Hund’s rule coupling in this multiorbital systems. We demonstrate that the two dispersion kinks are a consequence of these strong many-body interactions. This interpretation is in line with a growing number of theoretical predictions for kinks in various general models of correlated materials. Our results provide a unifying link between iron-based superconductors and different classes of correlated, unconventional superconductors such as cuprates and heavy-fermion materials.

Results from a synthetic model of the ITER XRCS-Core diagnostic based on high-fidelity x-ray ray tracing

A high-fidelity synthetic diagnostic has been developed for the ITER core x-ray crystal spectrometer diagnostic based on x-ray ray tracing. This synthetic diagnostic has been used to model expected performance of the diagnostic, to aid in diagnostic design, and to develop engineering tolerances. The synthetic model is based on x-ray ray tracing using the recently developed xicsrt ray tracing code and includes a fully three-dimensional representation of the diagnostic based on the computer aided design. The modeled components are: plasma geometry and emission profiles, highly oriented pyrolytic graphite pre-reflectors, spherically bent crystals, and pixelated x-ray detectors. Plasma emission profiles have been calculated for Xe 44+ , Xe 47+ , and Xe 51+ , based on an ITER operational scenario available through the Integrated Modelling & Analysis Suite database, and modeled within the ray tracing code as a volumetric x-ray source; the shape of the plasma source is determined by equilibrium geometry and an appropriate wavelength distribution to match the expected ion temperature profile. All individual components of the x-ray optical system have been modeled with high-fidelity producing a synthetic detector image that is expected to closely match what will be seen in the final as-built system. Particular care is taken to maintain preservation of photon statistics throughout the ray tracing allowing for quantitative estimates of diagnostic performance.

Quasiparticle coherence in the nematic state of FeSe

We report electronic nematicity is a ubiquitous phenomenon in iron-based superconductors but its origin is still debated. Most models consider either spin or orbital degrees of freedom as the driving force but typically do not take electronic correlations into account. However, mass enhancements, coherent-incoherent crossovers, and the strong orbital differentiation can only be understood using correlations in a Hund's metal framework. Here, we study the influence of nematicity on the quasiparticle coherence in detwinned FeSe using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We compare photoemission spectral weight from d xz and d yz orbitals in the coherent quasiparticle peak and in the incoherent Hubbard band and find an anisotropy between the two orbitals. We interpret our observation in terms of a more coherent d xz orbital compared to the d yz orbital inside the nematic phase. This result is in contrast to earlier predictions of an incoherent d xz orbital and highlights the importance of electronic correlations in the description of nematicity.

Machine Learning for Improved Availability of the SNS Klystron High Voltage Converter Modulators

Beam availability has increased at the SNS, however, the targeted availability is greater than 95 %, while the SNS has failed to meet lower targets in the past. The HVCM used to power the linac klystrons have been one source of lost beam time and was chosen to explore using AI/ML techniques to improve reliability. Among the possibilities being explored are automating the tuning of HVCMs and predicting component failures such as capacitor aging, rectifier assemblies containing hundreds of diodes, and insulating oil degradation. The methodology pursued includes data cleaning, de-noising, post-analysis data labeling, and machine learning model development. We explore using Long Short-Term Memory and autoencoders for anomaly detection and prognostication used to schedule maintenance. We evaluate the use of model regularizers and constraints to improve the performance of the model and investigate methods to estimate the uncertainty of the models to provide a robust prediction with statistical interoperability. This paper describes the operational experience and known failures of the HVCMs and the proposed ML methodology and the preliminary results of training the AI/ML algorithms.

Anisotropic quasiparticle coherence in nematic BaFe 2 As 2 studied with strain-dependent ARPES

The hallmark of nematic order in iron-based superconductors is a resistivity anisotropy but it is unclear to which extent quasiparticle dispersions, lifetimes, and coherence contribute. While the lifted degeneracy of the Fe d xz and d yz dispersions has been studied extensively, only little is known about the two other factors. In this work, we combine in situ strain tuning with ARPES and study the nematic response of the spectral weight in BaFe 2 As 2 . The symmetry analysis of the ARPES spectra demonstrates that the d xz band gains quasiparticle spectral weight compared to the d yz band for negative antisymmetric strain Δε yy suggesting the same response inside the nematic phase. Our results are compatible with a different coherence of the d xz and d yz orbital within a Hund's metal picture. We also discuss the influence of orbital mixing.

Estimation variance bounds of importance sampling simulations in digital communication systems

In practical applications of importance sampling (IS) simulation, two basic problems are encountered, that of determining the estimation variance and that of evaluating the proper IS parameters needed in the simulations. The authors derive new upper and lower bounds on the estimation variance which are applicable to IS techniques. The upper bound is simple to evaluate and may be minimized by the proper selection of the IS parameter. Thus, lower and upper bounds on the improvement ratio of various IS techniques relative to the direct Monte Carlo simulation are also available. These bounds are shown to be useful and computationally simple to obtain. Based on the proposed technique, one can readily find practical suboptimum IS parameters. Numerical results indicate that these bounding techniques are useful for IS simulations of linear and nonlinear communication systems with intersymbol interference in which bit error rate and IS estimation variances cannot be obtained readily using prior techniques.

A new approach to importance sampling for the simulation of false alarms

In this paper a modified importance sampling technique for improving the convergence of Importance Sampling is given. By using this approach to estimate low false alarm rates in radar simulations, the number of Monte Carlo runs can be reduced significantly. For one-dimensional exponential, Weibull, and Rayleigh distributions, a uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator is obtained. For Gaussian distribution the estimator in this approach is uniformly better than that of previously known Importance Sampling approach. For a cell averaging system, by combining this technique and group sampling, the reduction of Monte Carlo runs for a reference cell of 20 and false alarm rate of lE-6 is on the order of 170 as compared to the previously known Importance Sampling approach.

Observation and analysis of thunderstorm-generated gravity waves in the lower stratosphere

The relation between internal gravity waves and thunderstorms may be important in at least two respects. First, thunderstorm cells could be excited or initiated by propagating gravity waves in the troposphere. Second, thunderstorms may contribute to the energy of the atmospheric gravity wave field. Observations of gravity waves associated with thunderstorms are analyzed. The analysis will emphasize the difference of thunderstorm-generated gravity waves in the troposphere and lower stratosphere.
