Competing Zero-Field Chern Insulators in Superconducting Twisted Bilayer Graphene

The discovery of magic angle twisted bilayer graphene has unveiled a rich variety of superconducting, magnetic, and topologically nontrivial phases. Here, we show that the zero-field states at odd integer filling factors in h-BN nonaligned devices are consistent with symmetry broken Chern insulators, as is evidenced by the observation of the anomalous Hall effect near moiré cell filling factor ν = +1. The corresponding Chern insulator has a Chern number C = ±1 and a relatively high Curie temperature of T c ≈ 4.5 K. In a perpendicular magnetic field above B > 0.5 T we observe a transition of the ν = +1 Chern insulator from Chern number C = ±1 to C = 3, characterized by a quantized Hall plateau with R yx = h/3e 2 . These observations demonstrate that interaction-induced symmetry breaking leads to zero-field ground states that include almost degenerate and closely competing Chern insulators, and that states with larger Chern numbers couple most strongly to the B field. In addition, the device reveals strong superconducting phases with critical temperatures of up to T c ≈ 3.5 K. By providing the first demonstration of a system that allows gate-induced transitions between magnetic and superconducting phases, our observations mark a major milestone in the creation of a new generation of quantum electronics.

Experimental evidence of plasmarons and effective fine structure constant in electron-doped graphene/h-BN heterostructure

Electron-electron interaction is fundamental in condensed matter physics and can lead to composite quasiparticles called plasmarons, which strongly renormalize the dispersion and carry information of electron-electron coupling strength as defined by the effective fine structure constant $α$ $^{*}_{ee}$. Although h-BN with unique dielectric properties has been widely used as an important substrate for graphene, so far there is no experimental report of plasmarons in graphene/h-BN yet. Here, we report direct experimental observation of plasmaron dispersion in graphene/h-BN heterostructures through angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements upon in situ electron doping. Characteristic diamond-shaped dispersion is observed near the Dirac cone in both 0° (aligned) and 13.5° (twisted) graphene/h-BN, and the electron-electron interaction strength $α$ $^{*}_{ee}$ is extracted to be $α$ $^{*}_{ee}$ ≈ 0.9 ± 0.1, highlighting the important role of electron-electron interaction. Our results suggest graphene/h-BN as an ideal platform for investigating strong electron-electron interaction with weak dielectric screening, and lays fundamental physics for gate-tunable nano-electronics and nano-plasmonics.

Multiple flat bands and topological Hofstadter butterfly in twisted bilayer graphene close to the second magic angle

Significance Multiple flat bands in high-quality twisted bilayer graphene close to the theoretically predicted second magic angle are observed. These well-isolated flat moiré bands host a nontrivial topology which is evidenced by a connecting multiband Hofstadter butterfly spectrum. This work provides a perspective for understanding the emergent quantum phases (i.e., strong correlation and band topology) in twisted bilayer graphene and the fractal Hofstadter spectra of multiple topological bands.

Modulation Doping via a Two-Dimensional Atomic Crystalline Acceptor

Two-dimensional nanoelectronics, plasmonics, and emergent phases require clean and local charge control, calling for layered, crystalline acceptors or donors. Our Raman, photovoltage, and electrical conductance measurements combined with ab initio calculations establish the large work function and narrow bands of α-RuCl 3 enable modulation doping of exfoliated single and bilayer graphene, chemical vapor deposition grown graphene and WSe 2 , and molecular beam epitaxy grown EuS. We further demonstrate proof of principle photovoltage devices, control via twist angle, and charge transfer through hexagonal boron nitride. Short-ranged lateral doping (≤65 nm) and high homogeneity are achieved in proximate materials with a single layer of α-RuCl 3 . Here, this leads to the best-reported monolayer graphene mobilities (4900 cm 2 /(V s)) at these high hole densities (3 × 10 13 cm -2 ) and yields larger charge transfer to bilayer graphene (6 × 10 13 cm -2 ).
