A high-capacity Sn metal anode for aqueous acidic batteries

Aqueous acidic batteries as a good choice to respond battery diversity, delivering safety, cost, environmental friendliness and high-power necessary for renewable energy storage. However, the practical adoption is greatly challenged by low-voltage and energy density due to the inadequate metal anode materials. Here we report an interfacial regulated Sn metal anode as the solution of the last piece of the puzzle. In this study, the ease of recycling, low potential, fast redox kinetics, and high capacity of Sn perfectly fit the battery system, and the Sn metal shedding critical issue is successfully suppressed by promoting uniform deposition for added interaction from alloying. Consequently, this reversible Sn anode with 442 mAh g -1 matches well to different types of cathodes. The as-assembled acidic batteries also demonstrate sufficient output voltage (up to 1.7 V), energy density (up to 312 Wh kg -1 based on both electrodes), kinetics (up to 24 C) and stability (up to 2400 cycles).

Interlayer gap widened $α$-phase molybdenum trioxide as high-rate anodes for dual-ion-intercalation energy storage devices

Employing high-rate ion-intercalation electrodes represents a feasible way to mitigate the inherent trade-off between energy density and power density for electrochemical energy storage devices, but efficient approaches to boost the charge-storage kinetics of electrodes are still needed. Here, we demonstrate a water-incorporation strategy to expand the interlayer gap of α-MoO 3 , in which water molecules take the place of lattice oxygen of α-MoO 3 . Accordingly, the modified α-MoO 3 electrode exhibits theoretical-value-close specific capacity (963 C g –1 at 0.1 mV s –1 ), greatly improved rate capability (from 4.4% to 40.2% at 100 mV s –1 ) and boosted cycling stability (from 21 to 71% over 600 cycles). A fast-kinetics dual-ion-intercalation energy storage device is further assembled by combining the modified α-MoO 3 anode with an anion-intercalation graphite cathode, operating well over a wide discharge rate range. Our study sheds light on a promising design strategy of layered materials for high-kinetics charge storage.

3D‐Printed Structure Boosts the Kinetics and Intrinsic Capacitance of Pseudocapacitive Graphene Aerogels

Abstract The performance of pseudocapacitive electrodes at fast charging rates are typically limited by the slow kinetics of Faradaic reactions and sluggish ion diffusion in the bulk structure. This is particularly problematic for thick electrodes and electrodes highly loaded with active materials. Here, a surface‐functionalized 3D‐printed graphene aerogel (SF‐3D GA) is presented that achieves not only a benchmark areal capacitance of 2195 mF cm −2 at a high current density of 100 mA cm −2 but also an ultrahigh intrinsic capacitance of 309.1 µF cm −2 even at a high mass loading of 12.8 mg cm −2 . Importantly, the kinetic analysis reveals that the capacitance of SF‐3D GA electrode is primarily (93.3%) contributed from fast kinetic processes. This is because the 3D‐printed electrode has an open structure that ensures excellent coverage of functional groups on carbon surface and facilitates the ion accessibility of these surface functional groups even at high current densities and large mass loading/electrode thickness. An asymmetric device assembled with SF‐3D GA as anode and 3D‐printed GA decorated with MnO 2 as cathode achieves a remarkable energy density of 0.65 mWh cm −2 at an ultrahigh power density of 164.5 mW cm −2 , outperforming carbon‐based supercapacitors operated at the same power density.
