Model reference adaptive control for the azimuth-pointing system of a balloon-borne stabilized platform

A balloon-born stabilized platform has been developed for the remotely operated altitude-azimuth pointing of a millimeter wave telescope system. This paper presents a development and implementation of model reference adaptive control (MRAC) for the azimuth-pointing system of the stabilized platform. The primary goal of the controller is to achieve pointing rms better than 0.1 deg. Simulation results indicate that MRAC can achieve pointing rms better than 0.1 deg. Ground test results show pointing rms better than 0.03 deg. Data from the first flight at the National Scientific Balloon Facility (NSBF) Palestine, Texas show pointing rms better than 0.02 deg.

The Cosmic Background Explorer

The Cosmic Background Explorer (CBE), NASA's cosmological satellite which will observe a radiative relic of the big bang, is discussed. The major questions connected to the big bang theory which may be clarified using the CBE are reviewed. The satellite instruments and experiments are described, including the Differential Microwave Radiometer, which measures the difference between microwave radiation emitted from two points on the sky, the Far-Infrared Absolute Spectrophotometer, which compares the spectrum of radiation from the sky at wavelengths from 100 microns to one cm with that from an internal blackbody, and the Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment, which searches for the radiation from the earliest generation of stars.

South Pole studies of the anisotropy of the cosmic background radiation at one degree

A system is developed for making measurements of spatial fluctuations in the Cosmic Microwave Background at the 3-mm wavelength, on an angular scale of .5 to 5 degrees. The system includes a telescope with a Gaussian beam with an FWHM of 20 to 50 arcmin, an SIS coherent receiver operating around 90 GHz, and for balloon flights, a pointing system capable of 1 arc-minute RMS stabilization. Results are reported from ground-based measurements made from the South Pole station during December, 1988.
