Space Research Data Management in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration

Space related scientific research has passed through a natural evolutionary process. The task of extracting the meaningful information from the raw data is highly involved and will require data processing capabilities that do not exist today. The results are presented of a three year examination of this subject, using an earlier report as a starting point. The general conclusion is that there are areas in which NASA's data management practices can be improved and recommends specific actions. These actions will enhance NASA's ability to extract more of the potential data and to capitalize on future opportunities.

The needs of the 80's - Data processing.

The potential observational needs requiring data processing are assessed for a projection of the large data processing systems needed to meet the requirements of meteorology, environmentology, earth resources inventories, and hydrology in the next decade. It is anticipated that a large array of space and ground sensing devices and basic communications capabilities for collecting and disseminating large volumes of data will be available by 1980.

Data processing for astronomy missions.

The functions which must be performed to ensure the effective and efficient use of a space astronomical observatory may be separated into three major categories, including mission planning and analysis, mission operations, and data utilization. Each of these functions can be further subdivided. The most suitable locations for conducting the data processing operations in each case must be determined on the basis of criteria which take into account economical and operational factors. An advanced operational concept for an astronomical observatory is discussed.
