The BIMDA shuttle flight mission - A low cost MPS payload

The design, operation, and experimental protocol of the Bioserve-ITA Materials Dispersion Apparatus Payload (BIMDA) to be flown on the Space Shuttle on STS-37 are described. The aim of BIMDA is to investigate the methods and commercial potential of biomedical and fluid science applications in the microgravity environment. The BIMDA payload operations are diagrammed, and the payload components and experiments are listed, including the investigators and sponsoring institutions.

Seed sprout production: Consumables and a foundation for higher plant growth in space

Seed sprouts can be produced as a source of fresh vegetable materials and as higher plant seedlings in space. Sprout production was undertaken to evaluate the mass accumulations possible, the technologies needed, and the reliability of the overall process. Baseline experiments corroborated the utility of sprout production protocols for a variety of seed types. The automated delivery of saturated humidity effectively supplants labor intensive manual soaking techniques. Automated humidification also lend itself to modest centrifugal sprout growth environments. A small amount of ultraviolet radiation effectively suppressed bacterial and fungal contamination, and the sprouts were suitable for consumption.

L1 libration point manned space habitat

Second generation stations or Manned Space Habitats (MSHs) are discussed for an Earth-Moon libration point and in lunar orbit. The conceptual design of such a station is outlined. Systems and subsystems described reflect anticipation of moderate technology growth. The evolution of the L1 environments is discussed, several selected subsystems are outlined, and how the L1 MSH will complete some of its activities is described.
