Melamine modification of fuel cell electrodes

A method for forming a melamine-modified electrode that includes providing a metal based electrode and patterning a surface of the metal-based electrode by contacting the electrode with a melamine solution to form a patterned metal-based electrode. The patterned metal-based electrode includes metal sites blocked with melamine molecules and metal sites which are not blocked such that the metal-based electrode selectively adsorbs O2 instead of at least one of sulfate, phosphate, or sulphonate. A range of 20% to 40% of the metal sites are blocked with melamine molecules.

Pt 3 Sn nanoparticles enriched with SnO 2 /Pt 3 Sn interfaces for highly efficient alcohol electrooxidation

Pt 3 Sn nanoparticles (NPs) enriched with Pt 3 Sn/ultra-small SnO 2 interfaces (Pt 3 Sn@u-SnO 2 /NG) were synthesized through a thermal treatment of Pt 2 Sn/NG in a H 2 atmosphere, followed by annealing under H 2 and air conditions. The unique structure of Pt 3 Sn NPs enriched with Pt 3 Sn/SnO 2 interfaces was observed on the Pt 3 Sn@u-SnO 2 /NG catalyst based on HRTEM. The optimized Pt 3 Sn@u-SnO 2 /NG catalyst achieves high catalytic activity with an ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) activity of 366 mA mg Pt -1 and a methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) activity of 503 mA mg Pt -1 at the potential of 0.7 V, which are eight-fold and five-fold higher than those for the commercial Pt/C catalyst (44 and 99 mA mg Pt -1 , respectively). The Pt 3 Sn@u-SnO 2 /NG catalyst is found to be 3 times more stable and have higher CO tolerance than Pt/C. The outstanding performance of the Pt 3 Sn@u-SnO 2 /NG catalyst should be ascribed to the synergetic effect induced by the unique structure of Pt 3 Sn NPs enriched with Pt 3 Sn/SnO 2 interfaces. The synergetic effect between Pt 3 Sn NPs and ultra-small SnO 2 increases the performance for alcohol oxidation because the Sn in both Pt 3 Sn and SnO 2 favors the removal of CO ads on the nearby Pt by providing OH ads species at low potentials. The present work suggests that the Pt 3 Sn@u-SnO 2 is indeed a unique kind of efficient electrocatalyst for alcohol electrooxidation.

Electronic tuning of confined sub-nanometer cobalt oxide clusters boosting oxygen catalysis and rechargeable Zn–air batteries.

Reasonable design of robust bifunctional oxygen catalysts from an electronic structure perspective is intriguing and challenging for the development of high active rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs). In this study, the favorable regulation of the electronic structure of the cobalt oxide nanoclusters was firstly predicted by density functional theory (DFT) simulation, and then experimentally verified by confining sub-nanometer CoOx clusters (0.86 nm) into the small pore of ZIF-8 derived N-doped nanomaterials (PNC) using a microporous MOFs confinement strategy. The confined effect of the MOF micropores not only enhanced the stability of the subnanometer cobalt oxide clusters, but also make it coupled with Co-Nx to further regulate the electronic structure of the former, synergistic resulting in enhanced ORR/OER actives. As a result, the optimized 0.05CoOx@PNC catalyst demonstrates outstanding bifunctional oxygen performance with a smaller potential gap of 0.67 V. Moreover, the rechargeable Zn-air batteries integrated 0.05CoOx@PNC air cathode displays encouraging performance with a peak power density of 157.1 mW cm(-2), a specific capacity of 887 mAh g(Zn)(-1)at 10 mA cm(-2) and long-term cyclability for over 200 h, significantly outperforming the benchmark electrode couple consisted of Pt/C/RuO2. DFT calculation further revealed that reducing particle size and coupling with Co-N could effectively regulate the charge distribution of CoOx nanoclusters and downshift the D-band center of Co adsorption sites in CoOx nanoclusters, which reduced the reaction barrier of intermediate O-2* and OH* and ORR/ OER over potential, thus accelerating the overall ORR/OER kinetic process. This work offers a novel reference for the construction of a robust sub-nanometer cluster catalysts in the field of ZABs.

Eliminating dissolution of platinum-based electrocatalysts at the atomic scale

Deployment of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells is limited by the durability of Pt-nanoscale catalysts during cathodic oxygen reduction reactions. Dissolution processes on single crystalline and thin film surfaces are now correlated leading to the design of PtAu catalysts with suppressed dissolution. A remaining challenge for the deployment of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells is the limited durability of platinum (Pt) nanoscale materials that operate at high voltages during the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction. In this work, atomic-scale insight into well-defined single-crystalline, thin-film and nanoscale surfaces exposed Pt dissolution trends that governed the design and synthesis of durable materials. A newly defined metric, intrinsic dissolution, is essential to understanding the correlation between the measured Pt loss, surface structure, size and ratio of Pt nanoparticles in a carbon (C) support. It was found that the utilization of a gold (Au) underlayer promotes ordering of Pt surface atoms towards a (111) structure, whereas Au on the surface selectively protects low-coordinated Pt sites. Finally, this mitigation strategy was applied towards 3 nm Pt 3 Au/C nanoparticles and resulted in the elimination of Pt dissolution in the liquid electrolyte, which included a 30-fold durability improvement versus 3 nm Pt/C over an extended potential range up to 1.2 V.
