Surface energetics of wurtzite and sphalerite polymorphs of zinc sulfide and implications for their formation in nature

Surface energetics of zinc sulfide nanoparticles determines their structure, properties, and occurrence. Using a combination of experimental techniques, we investigated the thermodynamics of the two polymorphs, sphalerite and wurtzite at bulk and nanoscale to understand their occurrence. Calorimetric measurements confirmed that wurtzite has a lower surface energy than sphalerite, which causes a reversal in phase stability at the nanoscale, with wurtzite energetically stable for particle size below 10 nm. Taking these surface energies into account, a simple model of the thermodynamics of the sphalerite - wurtzite transformation as a function of particle size and temperature can explain the occurrence of the zinc sulfide polymorphs in environments as diverse as ore bodies and planetary atmospheres.

Potential Heating Energy and Cost Savings of Dual Fuel Heat Pump Controls as a Residential Building Equipment Retrofit in the U.S.

This study investigated the energy and cost savings potential by modeling a dual fuel heat pump system with its control for a residential building in (5A) cold climate in U.S. The simulation analysis showed that the application of the DFHP system and its control to the target building can save the heating energy by 42% over a gas furnace system (baseline system). Although the HP-only system can save more heating energy (i.e., 53%) over the baseline system than DFHP system does, the DFHP with its control demonstrated the higher cost savings when a time of use electricity rate was considered.

Cooperative formation of porous silica and peptides on the prebiotic Earth

Significance Although catalysis by mineral surfaces has been considered to be important in prebiotic chemistry, the role of porous silica phases, with reactions taking place within specific confined environments, has not been explored. This paper proposes that structure direction through interaction of dissolved silica with organic species in aqueous solution produces porous silica catalysts for prebiotic organic reactions to form larger polymerized molecules, with possible control of chirality. This process may involve feedback and amplification if the organics produced by catalysis can also act as structure-directing agents for enhanced synthesis of the catalytic silica structures. To our knowledge, such structure direction and catalysis, though well known in materials science, have not been considered previously in the context of prebiotic chemistry.
